Mr. MELCHEBS keeps a full assortment of all the more I Interesting publications. MASON & HAMLIN CABINET OBOANS.-It is very seldom that any business furnishes so good an ex ample of true enterprise as the manufacture of j the above celebrated instrument, conducted by Messrs. MASON SC HAMLIN, of Boston, Mass. It 11 teems but as yesterday that the mention of a reed I j instrument suggested naught bnt snarling, fine- I tooth comb music, and yet such a vast improve ment has been made that the quality of tone is now hardly recognizable as coming from a reed. I ? If our musical readers will personally examine it, I they will agree with us, that the Cabinet Organ j will fully bear out all that ia said of it.-Louisville j Journal. it MES. I Cl The Commanding Officer Post of Charleston, S. j g C., ia charged with the execution of tl.-s urder. I - a * ? . . ? By command bf Brevet Major General ED. R. S. I CANBT. I g LOUIS V. CAZIARC, Aide-de-Cai.jp, Act. Asst. Adjt. General. I d Rsv. Joss BACHMAN, D.D., LL.D.- Wo had tho a< pleasure yesterday of seeing at Mr. HICKEY'S gild-1 * ing store, a very handsome portrait of this vene- I m rabie Charleston patriarch. The German Friend-1 ly Society, of which Dr. BACHMAN is a highly hon-1 cered and thc oldest living member, some months I ago paased a resolnti m. calling for the appoint ment of a committee, who should take the neces- j aary steps to procure a portrait, to be added to the j gallery of the Society. Messrs. JACOB SMALL, HEN? EY SIEG LING and SAMUEL J. BURGEE were charged with this delicate- and pleasing duty. Mr. I J. B. CURTIS, the well-known Charleston Artist, who has not his superior any-1 . where in catching a most excellent counter feit expression of the human face divine, was given carle'blanche to paint a good portrait of the ^ Doctor; and this we are free to say Mr. CUBTIS j K. has done. He has succeeded in giving us a most ?? speaking likeness. In fact, it is no copy at all-it SI is the original, the very man himself transferred on ^ canvas. Dr. B., in his younger days, had a qt great fondness for dogs, rabbits, squirrels, etc., ru etc. We do not know whether he still cultivates ^ their aociety ot not; but if he does, we are sure j 81 the little quadrupeds would readily come up to " the picture, and lick the Doctore right hand, that pi is holding the nook. It was a good idea of Mr. I ?j CUBITS' to place a miniature representation of Dr. m B's church, in Archdale street, on the left side in a) the background. I Ul The German Friendly Society's Gallery already J* numbers several fine portraits. They have pic- I tu tures of MICHAEL KAI TEMEN and DANIEL STBOBEL, I pi two of the founders of the Society; of JACOB SASS, j m who commanded the German Fusiliers at the ?jj siege of Savannah; of JAC:B ECEHABD, for many I Te years Treasurer of the Society; of Dr. PHILIP bt TrontAN, [a benevolent pation of the Society, to whose morality it is indebted for its library, a large portion of which waa destroyed by fire]; of Z JACOB F. MTNTZING, for many years President of j' the Sociely, who died while Mayor of this city. Without wishing to disparage any of the l i worthies named above, we cannot help observing I ? that more worthy and more distinguished than }. any of these is he whose picture is now added to | fl their number. Rev. JOBN BACHMAN, now seventy- I j eight years old, came to Charleston iu early man- fl hood, took charge of the old German Lutheran fl Church. [The present church has been built since. ) fl He became a member of the German Friendly fl Society in 1816, and as we have mentioued on I I previous occasions, was both its semi-centennial fl and centennial orator. The portrait will be at Mr. HENBY SIEQLINQ s ~ gtore during the remainder of this week. II. H. Ita great strength on account of being double-geared, which not only doubles ?he strength by dividing the strain on twice the number of teeth, but by gearing on both sides of the* wheels it equalizes the wear on the shafts, and materially lessens the friction, enabling the horses to do much more work than with any other Power. 2. Ita compactness and extreme portability, it weighing about one-half as much aa other Horse Powers, and occu? pying but one-third the apace, it can be packed in small boxes, thus saving much expense. It is BO simple that the most ignorant person would have no difficulty in putting it together. 3.
