pound. Tho iucreasiug demand tor Pcriquo lins
caused a great increase in tho amount produced.

makers declaring thal any ono who attempts it on
a large scalo will surely fail. Notwithstanding the
croakinge of tho old banda in tho husincBB, this
year Mr. Albert Perry, a young cre?lo of this
pariah, in connection with uti enterprising Gentle?
man from tho North, baa nttomptcd to produco
and manufacturo a crop of ninety acres, believing
that any kiud of business that can ho carriod ou
successfully on a small beale can bo made profita?

It remains to bc sccu which is right. Tho
season has boen ono of tho woist known, and tho
quantity of tobacco will bc very small, although
tho quality is good. The modo of preparing mid
manufacturing this wonderful tobacco is sim?
plicity itself, and remains tho samo now as whon
"Old Poriquo" adorned this earth. In tho month
of July it is cut ntid hung up in long sheds pre?
paid! for tho purpose. U hen proporly dried it is
utommjd aud twisted into plugs of about half
pound woight eaoh. Thenn plugs aro thon placod
Into boxea, holding about forty pounds each, and
by means ot along lovor, ono end of which ia
loaded with cord wood, tho dosirod powci for
pressing is produced. For tho first wook tho plugs
must bo taken out daily and roworked, after which
tho operation becomes loss frequent, until at tho ni ul
of thirty days tho tobacco ia considered ready for
putting imo carrots. Those, carrots or plugs aro
usually about fourteen incbuB long and two aud a
half inches in diameter, weighing four pounds.
After forming them in tins shane they aro covered
with canvas and lushed firmly with hoavy cord
from end to und. In this condition it ia allowed
to remain for several months, and is ofton t hus
acnt to market. When lakon from tho ropo tho
tobacco is in fit condition for usc, but if kept for a
year its flavor is greatly improvod. On account of
tho fino flavor of this tobacco, many poreona aup
poso that it ia not pure, but sweetened and flavor?
ed in tho manner of other chowing tobacco. But
auch is not the caso. Tho regular Periquo tabac?
co ia the himplo loaf, and nothing more. Ita fra?
grance ia obtained by carn in manufacturing, and
ia derived entirely from juicos contaiuod in tho
weed.
