The following lines appeared a few weeks ago. in the Londonderry Sentinel. They breath the heroic spirit of that noble land, which has always a heart to feel and a hand to avenge tbe wrongs of the oppressed : CHARLOTTE, ARCH DUCHESS OP AUS? TRIA AND EMPRESS OF .MEXICO. Long heavy aigha come drearily on winda that northward blow And beating, oh, so wearily, my ebbing h.'e-tiles flow: Dim forms around me eliding," amid a gr< -.e-liko gloom. And spectral horror hiding within the ban L ted room. The shadows deeper falling fron; night's approaching wing. While fearful voices calling, upon the dark air ring ; I close my eyes in horror beyond all power to name, lu wild and madd'ning tenor I fly from fate in vain. For now my soul of sadness is like a moonlit hall. Filled up with scenes of madness, all painted on the wall. As through this ghostly chamber I wander now alone, Where I must sall remember thy name, Napoleon ! Oh, fetch my love, mv murdered love, across the biUowy sea, For spirits bear from realm a above a fearful tal. tonio! Not one-not one of Caesar'.) line has drawn the sword to save- . Now; burning suns will daily shine on Maximilian's gravel The ides of March-the bloody ides-behold, his wouxfts are red I Yet not by Tiber's yellow tides they dug his narrow bed, Nor yet by Danube's rolling wave, nor on Sadowa'B MD, The *Indian laid bim in his graf* beside the purple rill. Arise, ye legions from the dead 1-will no Octavius now Avenge the blood Juarez ched, or raise his ero witless brow? A little four year old girl in Lowell went up to her Utile comparion the other day, and throwing her arms around his neck, exclaimed in mournful tones: "0, Eddy, I am going away from you away down East 1 What w?l yon do without me ?" The little boy, looking as grave as a judge, replied with a sigh: "Well, I dent Imow, unless I jnmp over the moon." This waa beginning Ufe early, decidedly. Young Idea (trying to shoct at the favorite mark of the s ex)-"Grandma, do they make men like they do stockings ?" . Grandmama-"Why, no, childi What absurd questions you ask." Young Idea- "Well, what made you say this morning that Major Skittles waa such a well-knit man?" Mamma-"Charlie, I was very much shocked to hea**' you singing Top Goes the Weasel' in church.'' Charlie-"Weil, mamma, I saw everybody was singing, and it was the only tune ? knew." A Frenchman, a stranger in New York, stopped a lad in the street and politely aa ked: "Mon friend, whats se name of zis street?" "Well, who said it wasn't?" replied the boy. "What you caU sis street?" "Of course we do." "Pardonnez ! I hu ve not ze name: what's von call him?" ..Yes. Watts, we call iL" "Zia street?" "Watta street, old fellow; and don't you try to make game of me." "Sacre mon de Dieu ! I ask you, ono, two, tree, several times, often, will you teU me ze name of ze street, eh ?' "Watts street, I tell you. You're drunk, ain't you?" "Mon Uttle fren, vere you Uve, eh ?" "In Yandam street." "Eh, Bien ! You Uve yon dam street, ?ad you is von d-d fool!" And they parted, entertaining a high opinion of each other's politeness. The first day a Uttle boy went to school, the teacher asked him if he could spell. "Yes, afr." "Well, how do you spell boy?" "Oh, just as other folks do." A Milwaukie orator declared in a recent speech thai, there were one hundred young law students m that city who hadn't brains "enough to trundle a wheelbarrow. "Is the gorilla to be seen here?" "Yes, sir." "I want to see bim." "Very weU, sir." "It is fifty cents, isn't it? ' "One dollar, sir; fifty cents for servants." "WeU, I'm a servant." '"You a ser? vant?" "Yes, sir." "Whose?" " Toura, sir-your humble servant." "Walk in and take a seat; the joke is worth the price of admission." Ono exceedingly warm day in Juno a neighbor met an old man and remarked that it was very hot. "Yes." said Jot , "if it wasn't tor one thing I should say we were going to have a thaw." "What ' is that ?" inquired his friend. "There's nothing J froze," says Joe. The man went on his way. MEN ONE WOULD BATHER NOT MEET.-Men who tell stories that run into one another, so that you find it very difficult to get away at the end of them. Men who have quarreled with all their rela? tions. ? Men who have been betrayed and abandoned in tbe most heartless manner by all of their friendo. Men who hr re been persecuted and swindled by a general com, piracy of everybody. Men who imitate popular actors. Men who are always asking, "Don't vou think so?" Men who are always "putting a case." Men who agree with you too much. COMMERCIAL. Tate Cbsrleiton Cotton .Market. September 12.-Our quotations for Western produce and provisions are generally intended to represent wholesale prices. At retail, or in niling small orders, higher rates may have to be paid. COTTON-The market exhibited to-day even less vitality ?haw characterized the movement yesterday. The offer? ing supply continued light, several factors, in anticipa? tion of a reaction, refusing to uncover their tables; while those who exposed their sample* < Tin ced increased anx? iety to realize, and were apparently not unwilling to maze further concessions, notwithstanding which buyers showed Uttle disposition to come forward, prices not be? ing reduced yet to the point at which they are disposed to operate. Under these circumstances, the day's transactions were restricted to 150 bales, taken by three or tour par? ties, at easier prices, but attended with so much irregu? larity aa to entirely preclude the possibility of definite quotations. The prevalence of a heavy rain storm in the early part of the day interfered somewhat with opera? tions. STATEMENT or COTTON. On new transac? tions C is ashed, and in some cases the rise is acceded to. But few ot the oustanding dve per cent, call loans arv marked up, although the report is current that next week the change may be made and an advaueo establish? ed to more healthy rates than those whi h have ruled during Ihe recent plethora of unemployed capital, and of accumulating National Bank currency. It w?l be remembered that lat,t week's hank statement was unexpectedly favorable; showing a gam of 3 mil? lions in legal tenders and of!', millions in deposits. This two-told increase is supposed to have been lost this week, aud the bauk aggregates may stand nearly whore they did a fortnight aj;o, as to deposits and reserve. The estimates on thia point aro very various, indeed, some being more and other? less favorable than that wo have cited. lhere is no doubt, howev- r, that UM Vain to the interior by which these chances are partly regulated has been slowly going on, and that this dram might have been much morj active were the crops moving moro rspidly. The discount demand shows no new feature, tho best paper ia scarce and passes at f>'..a7. other grades being out of avor and tolling at ii ref ular rates. The stock market ia dull and devoid of animation.
