CAUGHT AT LAST.
?s lat kain Fwdiaui so fain ge spann sn,
Dis nicht eno?ch kommt an die Sonnen.
The foregoing homely old German proverb,
somewhat equivalent to the more pithy English
counterpart, "Murder will out," was illustrated
yesterday in a remarkable manner. A robbery
waa committed a year ago on the premises of Mrs.
TENNANT, at the extreme northeastern part of the
city, and until yesterday the perpetrator doubtless
felt sure of perfect immunity. This particular
deed of villainy had perhaps almost passed from
the tablet? of his memory -crowded out by others
of more recent data. But he had reckoned with?
out his host; all this while fate slowly, but surely,
spun a web of proof which at last secured him in
her strong t?t. He was arrested yesterday, and
confessed that he. committed the burglary by
means of false key?.
He had stolen a gold watch and $100. The mo?
ney, we understand, was recovered, but the watch
h ad .undergone a retrograde metamorphosis from
gold, baring degenerated into silver.
-o
ALMOST A Bow.-Late yesterday afternoon we
noticed a considerable n-owd in Meeting street, in
tc' vicinity of the Charleston Hotel. Upon in
quiry we ascertained that this fortuitous aggrega?
tion of pedestrians had been attracted thither by
the promise of a row. There were two drunken
men, keeping neither the even nor the noiseless
tenor of their way. A good Samaritan [yclept
policeman], appointed by the Oity Fathers for
such emergencies, landry volunteered to direct
their steps and steer their . course, but
with that perversity innate in man-in drunken
man not excepted-the amiable pair evi?
dently conceived the idea that the said
Samaritan had some sinister object in view in
th? tender 'of service made them. They refus?
ed to accept it, and even attempted tc take the
club from policeman's hand, where it of right
belonged. Some citizens standing by came to
the rescue, and policeman then brought one of
the fin-wreaked mariners safely to port, i.e. to the
guardhouse. The other, upon looking around
found lag bail, and took French leave. Exeunt
Omnes.
TYPOGRAPHICAL ERBOBB.-';Tue Proof-sheet," a
beautifully executed printers' periodical, speaking
of typographical errors, tens the following good
one:
During an exciting presidential canvass that
took place when we were quite yoong, we con?
ceived the idea that our opinions on t h} issues in?
volved ware of great importance, and would exert
considerable influen?a if fairly presented to the
people. We were enthusiastic, and never for a
moment doubted that we had the abilitv to present
the aforesaid weighty opinions fairly, forcibly and
attractively. Among tho channels at our com?
mand for conveying these important matters to
the public was a newspaper published in a beauti?
ful Tillage in New Jersey, which we occasionally
favored with political letters. In one of these, we
asserted that all the marketable papers of the
country had been enlisted in the interest of the
opposite paity. We palled out come of the big
words which are said to "lie at the bottom of every
man's vocabulary," when, on seeing our letter in
print, we found it gravely .??ted that all the
7vspeetable papers of the country were against
tis. We don't remember having written a political
paragraph since that discovery.
"The Procf-thteC is published by Messrs. COL?
LINS & McLEtsTZB, Type Founders, Philadelphia.
WIT AND Wxanov OF DON QUTXOT?:. New York : D. Ap?
pleton* Co. 1867. Charleston ; John Russell.
A very neatly gotten up little volume, printed in
antique type on tinted paper. We have never been
very partial to books of thia character. "Elegant
Extracts,n "Beauties," "Wit and Wisdom," and all
thereat of them, are impositions on authors, and
it is a mistaken friendship that permits their being
trotted out in such dishabille. An author should
be read as he himself wished co be read, which of
of course is in the book, as he wrote it, and not in
garbled extracts. To be sure, as a "quotation
book," thia little manual bas its uses, and no doubt
will find nuny purchasers. Of the Knight of La
Mancha and his doughty Squire we do not think it
necessary to say one word hore. Nor of him who
limned that inimitable picture. CERVANTES is one
of the immortals, and Dou Quixote and Sancho
Panza familiar as household words.
THE HUMAN ELEMENT a THH INSPIRATION OF THE SA
oeaD ScMTTUBxa, ky T. P. Ctnwis, D. D-> Utc profe..
sor of Theology in the UniTBrslt, at Lewisburg, Pa.
The views of this author may be inferred from
the fact, atated in the preface, that he resigned
bis professorship iu the Theological Seminan be?
cause be felt he could not conscientiously publish
bis opinions on Inspiration, and at the same time
retain his position of instructor of candidates f,,r
the ministry in an evangelical denomination, where
these views w?re deemed heterodox. He says :
"For many years I conscientiously and earnest?
ly struggled to maintain the current theories of
tba infalli bility of Scripture Inspiration 'until all
poaaibihtyof doing so reasonably and honestly
was gone. Only ven- slowly, unwillingly, and
against every eartldy prenosstssion and interest,
have I felt obliged to relinquish long cherished
and early opinions in respect to this point. And I
wish here only further to express my conviction
and testimony as to tho httlc alteration it necessa?
rily involves in the experimental parts of Christian
Theology while yet giving thom a progressive ten?
dency and movement which is, in faut, a new Ufe
tuid vividueas, of value incalculable to those who,
like myself, bavo been ever prone to settle down
into an excessive con*ervatism except as shaken
from its sloth by Dirine Providence and grace. It
need and ought not to involve controversy among
Christians. And humbly do I pray that the change
which I see inevitable on this subject, may take
?olace quietly in the Evangelical Churches of our
land, without strife and bitterness, but marked
with an increase of gentleness, charity, earnest?
ness tad zeal. - Such, surely, was the spirit and in?
tention of the Master. "

Florida, 4c. These steam linea have now become
a necessity to the trade, and bring and carry the
produce which (fives life to our railroad enterprises
and in different forms afford employment to labor
and help to distribute wealth through the com?
munity. There is at present an animated struggle
taking place between the line of steamors and rail?
roads with Norfolk aa a centre, the line of steam?
ers and railroads with Charleston as a centre, and
those with Savannah as a concentrating point.
They are now gradually bringing all their means
and appliances to bear, in order to see whioh will
ultimately be the great depot for.the country from
this point west to the Mississippi. It becomes the
sons of Old Charleston to be op and watchful.

ARL IOU BILIOUS?
Multitude! of both sores will answer this question in
the affirmative ; for, next to disorders of the stomach,
' liver-complaints aro perhaps the most prevalent of all in?

corners, an uneasy or slightly painful sensation in the
right side, pain between the Shoulder blades, sick-head?
ache. Lassitude, mental dullness lack: of appetite, and ir?
regularity of the bowels. Whoever recognizes this diag?

Horse pu werri :
I. Ha great atrength on account of being double-geared,
which not only doubles the atrength hy dividing the
strain on twice the number of teeth, but'by gearing on
beth sides of the wheels it equalizes the wear on the
shafts, and materially lessens the friction, ?l?hrirtg the
horses to do much more work than with any other
Power.
2. Its compactness and extreme portability, it weighing
about one-half aa much aa other Horse Powers, and occu?
pying but one-third the space, it can be packed in small
boxes, thus saving match expenae. It is so simple that
the most ignorant person would have no difficulty in
putting lt together.
3. The facility with which it can be adjusted to any
bud of machinery st any angle, either on the ground or
over head, without moving it from its foundation, will
be appreciated by formera and plantera aa specially adapt?
ed for driving Cotton Gins.
