for UH to imagine that cotton can be kept at ti
high price. Tho coat of production must form
thc Unbid of the value of an article lo the pro?
ducer, but supply and demand form the only
basis of price in commerce. If the supply it
greater than Ibo tlcmand, tho price will neces?
sarily bo low. If Ihe tlcmand is greater than
tho supply, the price will certainly bo high.
If thc cost of the production of nn article ie
so great aa to make its value grenier lo Ihe
producer Utan is the commercial price, then
the production oftbat article is only ruin to
the producer, and must be abandoned. There
was a time when indigo and tobacco were thc
staples of thia State, when as I'ar-occing
a statesman as ALEXANDER HAMILTON, then
Secretory of the Treasury, recommended, in a
roport advocating protection, that cotton should
not be protected aa the South would never pro?
duce enough to supply the wanta of the country.
Indigo came in competition with the same ar

We must, however, open our eyes to the fol?
lowing facts: Our planters are paying loo

possible for an article which ia produced
by money so obtained, to bo for any length of

swer is, sell your surplus land, and if that does

do one of these two things, your lands, now
mortgaged, will, in a few years, be aotd under
foreclosure. You are now merely an overseer,
working for very small, and very precarious
wages, although nominally master of your pos?
sessions.

higher than was the market price before the
war, oven when the planter is not obliged lo
