Middling.23 @23# Tba Baltimore Sun of Monday tho 9th inst, says, nu? der the head of Monetary and Commercial : We have received an officially corrected statement of | the public debt of tie United States on the 1st of Sep? tember, by which it appears that the clerical error in the first statement occurred in the amount of debt bear? ing currency interest m tue three-year compound in? terest notes by not deducting the amount that had ma? tured, $12,672,730, from the total amount then outstand? ing, viz: 191,612,330, which should have been t76,839 6. " ino wtal amount outstanding on tbs 1st of August, ma? tured and not matured, was ?111,857,860. Of this amount there was redeemed duri nj August $23,346,620-leaving total outstanding September 1st, 1867, of $91,612 350. This correction leaves as the debt outstanding, less cash m the Treasury, ?2,492,783,366.06, matead of ?2,606,656, t96.o5. There was therefore the very large reduction ol - '.\.v23,06o.96 made m the total debt, lona casi m the treasury, ?ince August 1st, instead of ?6,860,330.96, as bxs been stated. Our nauonsl debt was highest on the 31nt ot August, 1865, amounting at that date to $2,767, ?03, 686.91. In the twenty-four months that have elapsed we have paid off ?265,020,3Ji, or a monthly average of over $10,600,000. If this rate of reduction could be kept UL. in the future, the last dollar of the dr ot would be paid by july 1st, 1887, or m one month lest than twenty years. There was great dullness in New York financial circles on saturday, owing to the troubles of two > a ti o nal banks, and the absurd sensational rumors set afloat by gold .peculators, that Oem Giant and Secretary Mcculloch bad been superceded. The troubles of ibe two banks, however, we are assured, are too small to attract special notice. It is now a ta tod, in the matter of thc 1st Nation? al i*ui? oi Kingston, New York, that Mr. Haabrouck, its president, was Indee ted to the Institution for about $90, 000. He baa, however, placed all bis property in the bands of the directors, sud the officers oi the institution have promptly made arrangements to redeem their out? standing paper, and on Saturday morning all tbebr notes held against thu bank in New York were redeemed. The bank ia solvent, but the stock will probably be slightly ailee ted by the dessication. A government examiner is In charge, and it ia reported that the prooeeda ot tho pres 1 lent's estate will be enough to meet the deficiency in the bank assets, and to enable the institution to pay 100 cents on the dollar.
