SO.VG OF STEAM.
BT GEO BOB W. CUTT EB.
Harnees me down with your iron bauds.
Be sure of your curb and rein.
For I scorn the strength of your pun> hands,
AB a tempest scorns a chain ;
How I laughed as 1 lay concealed from sight.
For many a countless hour.
At the childish boavta of human might.
And the pride ot human power.
When I saw an army upon the land,
A nary upon the seas.
Creeping along, a auail-liko band,
Or waiting a wayward breeze;
When I saw the peasant reel
With the toil which he faintly bore.
Aa he turned at tho tardy wheel.
Or toiled at the weary oar.
When I measured the panting courser's speed,
Thc flight of the carrier dove.
As they bore a law a king d-creed,
Or the lines of impatient love;
I could not but think how the .? orld would feel
As theee were outstripped alar.
When I should bo bound to the rushing keel,
Or chained to the flying car !
Ha ! ba ! ha I They fouud mo at last ;
And they invited me forth at length,
And I rushed to my throne with a thunder blast,
And laughod in my iron strength I
Oh 1 then you aaw a wondrous change
On earth and ocean wide,
Where now my flory armies range.
Nor wait for wind or tide
Hurrah I burrah ! the waters o'er
The mountain steep decline;
Time-space have yielded to my power
The giant streams of the queenly west,
And the Orient floods divine..
The ocean palea where'er I aweep.
To hear my strength rejoice,
and monsters of the briny deep
Cower trembling at my voice ;
I carry the wealth and ore of earth,
a he thought of the godlike mind ;
The wind Uga after my going forth.
The lightning ia left behind.
In the darksome depths of the fathomless mine
My tirelesB arm doth play,
Where the rocks ne'er saw the sun's decline
Or the dawn of the glorious day ;
I bring earth's guttering jewels np
From the hidden caves below,
An? I make the fountain's granite cup
With a crystal gush o'erflow.
I blow thc bellows, I forge the steel
In all the 'hops of trade;
I hammer the ore and turn the wheel
Where my arms of strength are made ;
I minago the furnace, the, IL Ul the mint
I carry, I rpm, I weave;
And all my doings I put in print
On every Saturday eve.
I've no muscles to weary, no breasts to decay.
No bones to be " laid on the shelf,"
And soon I Intend you may "go and play"
While I manage the world myself.
But harnees mo down with your iron bands.
Be rare of your curb and rein,
For I scorn the strength ot your puny hands
As the tempest acorns the chain.

Caora LS JACKSON.-The Mariana Courier of the
29th inst, says : At the present writing- the cater?
pillar has devoured about one-half of the cotton
Slant suited to their palates in this county, and by
ie 10th prox. will have eaten ont the balance.
There will be, however, a fair average crop made,
aa the plant was never better fruited, and the sea?
son, although too wet yet. is propitious for a full
yield. It is confidently asserted that the present
crop yield will be at least one-third greater than
the last year's crop. With this fact conceded, and
tah? provision crop being full, is it too much to
hope for and expect that the country will be en?
abled to pay her indebtedness, turn over a new
leaf and start anew, take hold of the new order of
tbings.prepared to take advantage of circumstances
as they may arise ?
Three bales of new cotton, from the plantation
of Mx. A. Hopkins, were received yesterday and
shipped by rail to Savannah.
Tho weather continues wet and disagreeable.
Cotton prospects daily growing worse, as well
from the excessive ra ns as from the ravages of
the caterpillar_TaUahessee Floridian.
The National Convention of Spiritualists at
Cleveland is the subject of remark by the Cleveland
Herald. According to all accounts they aro a
queer sect Tho editor says :
We were more interested in the female delegates
thai* in the mide. So far as the latter are concorm d
there is the usual gathering of loug-haired, heavilv
bearded, bald-headed, han kind. There is hardly
a stout man in the crowd, and not one fat one.
?lany wear spectacles; and almost all wear soft hat6,
and dus tors, and most of them carry carpet bags evi?
dently filled w t h books and pamphlets. The wo?
rn n are forth-*' most part past their prime, gener?
ally of the cadaverous order, with now and then a
cheerful face breaking out into smiles, and light?
ing up with jollity and intelligence. Aa a rule the
women faces are seriously Bad; as if they had come
to find some ona who could minister to a mind dis?
eased, some one who could pluck a rooted sorrow.
The "bloomer" costume is not infrequent in tho
convention, the wearers tripping about evidently
not?t ease, bat yet a? if determined to have their
own way. Two of ;he "strong-minded"have throwu
themselves inside regular frock coats and browsers,
the coat being closed tightly in fr ont. These women
dispense entirely with crinoline, and both being
?pare in figure, have a very lank, scant, chilly look.

NEW ORLEANS, September 6.-COTTON-The move?

unfavorable weather constituting the chief impediment
to operations. Tho market too, is as scantily supplied,
only two or three desirable Ustg'belng ottered, and SJ fac?
tors who uncovered their tables steadily adhered to pre?
vi ona requirements, there was little inducements for
buyers to come forward, alnce their limits were fully
lc. V lb below the asking prices. Hence, the day's
transactions ware limited, being confined to 200 bales,
taken by three or four parties for the completion of pre?

on the whole, easier, the market closing at our quotations

In the world.
They an unrivalled for their singing qualities and for
the harmonious roundness of their tone. Then ls s
perfect homogeneity throughout all th? registers. The
upper notes are remarkable for a clearness and parity
which I do not find in any other instrument while the
base ls distinguished for power without harshness, and
for e magnificent sonority.

Poor Pianos are superiorto any I have jver seso ta

I have never heard a tone so perfect; it yields every
expression that ls needed In music, and its quality ls
capable of change to meet evory sentiment. This ls s
rare po ver, and ls derived from the perfect purity qf
its tone, together with its sympathetic, elaetlo and well
balanced touch.
