ner of Pinckney and Meeting streets, the entire
stock in trade of the store formerly occupied as a
wholesale hat and fancy goods establishment. The
goods offered for sale consist of every variety of

highest bidder, and merchant.-, and ethers in?
terested would do well to attend.

THE ?ACHT ELEANOR. This tine yacht waa
launched from the ship yard of Mr. F. M. JONES,
at the east end of Calhoun street, on Sari relay,
and was plying around tho harbor yesterday af?
ternoon, freighted with a cargo of connoisseurs,
who were telling lier qualities in a trial trip.
The Eleanor attracted universal attention, from
the beauty of her model and from her completeness
in every respect. Mr. JONES is a thorough ship?
wright, and his latest production combines even
improvement known in naval architecture.
-o
Ax EcxrrsE.- Tho weather still continues to bo
changeable, alternating at brief periods between
thc-warmth of a dear sunshine, and the coolness
attendant upon bjav.i rains. We presura* this
disagreeable etnte ol things will exist until Friday
next, the 13th, upon the evening of which day an
eclipse of tho moon will take placo, after which
time we are inclined to hopo for reasonable and
delightful weather.
The eclipse will commence at a? minnie.-, atti t 5
o'clock, and pndat 3il minutes past 8 o'clock.

To KEEP MLLE SWEET. - A Mr. Born, a corres?
pondent of the Scientific American, states that Ju?
has practiced a peculiar method, with much suc?
cess, of preserving sweet milk m the , \st. lt
simply consists in placing a piece o new hammer?
ed iron, or three twelve-penny nails in each tin pan,
then pourine; the wenn milk on them. He be?
lieves that electricly has something to do with
producing tho rebult ; ho has tried many experi?
ments b< fore he hit upon this one, which he found
to preserve the milk sweet for a longer tinif than
any other plan tried by him.
-o -
THE PROSPECTS ow THE COAST.-We aiv ineLoed
to believe that the unfavorable reports from th
Sea Islands have been greatly exaggerated; ard
though tho caterpillai has devastated many plan?
tations, the injury is nut complete, ko some sec?
tions the worms have paten the entire crop on one
place, while the adjoining held has not been
touched. This seeming partially has been grate?
fully received by the planters, as many of them
wiD be enabled to save a portion of their crop,
while a few, more fortunato, have been spared the
attacks of their crawling foe.
We have seen a sample of Sea Island Cotton
trom tho plantation of Mr. W. B. CUTTER, on
John's Island. It is entirely free from insects,
and the staple is of a superior quality. Mr. Cor?
in has been fortunato in bis planting, and will
soon reap the result of his labors. The planters
along the coast have had to contend with many
adverse influences, and we are happy to learn that
the damage resulting from iain?, caterpillars. Av
will not be cs large us was at first estimated.
KDIQ STREET.-This street has beon, within the
memory of the oldest inhib? tauts, the great
thoroughfare for the retail trade of the city, and
as such has been patronized by those of the fair
sex whose time is devoted to shopping and sight?
seeing. Aside from its advantages as a business
centre, King street is thu most fashionable prome?
nade in tho city, and the merchants whoso stores
are open upon this route have improved their pro?
perty until the different establishments now vie
with each other in Heir external appearance. A
rusty, time-alained front on King street ia sn
anomaly, for the merc.'iant is aware of the neces?
sity of presenting an attraction exterior, as it is
often au inducement for the casual shopper to be?
come a regular customer. During the sommer
months the stores on the fashionable* portion of j
King street have been subjected to a series of im?
provements, and have emerged from the hands of
the mechanics renovate?', and glistening witta new
paint. This process has been general, but in
some instances it is more perceptible than in
others. The stores in the lower part of the
Victoria Range suffered considerably bj the late
Ure ; their fronts were blackened and Bmoke
ataiued, while the interior wa? damaged alike by
fire and water. With commendable /eal, the pro?
prietors instantly commenced to repair the in?
juries inflictt-d by the fire, and the Btores that had
suffered from this jause are now in a far better
condition than before that e\enl.
-o
MOUNT PLEASANT.- The Congregational Church
at this place was ivoptued for divine service on
last Sunday. During the larger portion of the war
that building was used as a military hospital, and
aoon after the evacuation of Charleston it was con?
verted into a school-house for colored children
The corporation, alter several attem] ls, ..urcceded
in recovering the building from the Freedman's
Bureau aboui twelve months since. Al thal time
they placed the Cliurch outlet thc pastoral charge
ofarevereud gentioman but owing to "i.ir ina?

After consultan..<i ii was determined to re-open

THE BEAT.- lesterday waa one of tho days that
tried men's tempers. Notwithstanding the recent
li? a\ jr milis the atmosphere was close and atifli:ur,
ie>t a breath ot air waa stirring, uaturoseemedex?
hausted with her pluvial effort* and wished toropair
thc damage by drying tho puddles as epcodily as
possible. Fe w pei socs ventured into the red hot
.-treets without armin? themselves with an um?
biella, and endeavored to ward off the rays of the
->uu by every means in their power. Old Sol exult?
ed in In?, strength aud exerted htinselt to suet-, an
extent that long after he had retired his influence
uas felt. It was a Jay long to be lemombered, and
we ti ust that as wo aro not salamanders our |K>wers
of endurance may not again be put io so severe a
test. September has tho credit of closiug the
bummer and inaugurating the cool breezes that
are incidental to this season, bot so far this char?
acter lia? not been maintained.

Mr. WM. MATTHEESSB*, whose large clothing ea
tabltahmentis kept next to the corner, has thor?
oughly refitted, reorganized and rejuvenated his
store. The interior has been arranged for the fall
trade, while the front has been treated to a fr sh
coat of cream-cclorau paint. Capt. B. W. McTc
BEOUS, who is associated with Mr. MATTHIESSEN,
from his long experience in this business, ie able
to influence trade from different sections of the
country, and the Arm of Wai. MATTHIESSEN will
soon ba\otho samo business notoriety that char?
acterized its predecessor.
The store next to Mr. MATTHIESSEN' has been
thoroughly rebuilt, and is now occupied by Messrs.
MELCHER* A MULLER as dry goods merchants.
Those gentlemen, finding their businoas increas?
ing, were compelled to accommodate their custom?
ers, and their mo\e to their present location was
ono of necessity. The store waa built expressly
for the purpose, and is provided with all of the
paraphernalia needed by first-class retaildry goods
merchants.
Mr. JOSEPH FRANK, who waa among tho suffer?
ers by tho lato fire, has taken advantage of that
opportunity to improve his establishment, and it is
now one of the best arranged dry goods stores on
the street. The goods are tastily displayed, ami
the stock composed of every article in tho-lioo.
Tho last atoro in this range is occupied by tho
larpe clothine; catablishraent of Mesars. G. L?TTLE
& Cc. Theae gentlemen aro veterans in tho busi?
ness, their goods are well selected, and their nu?
merous customore havo no difficulty in making
selcctiona.
Aa to tho case with tho other atores of thia
range the hand of improvement ia plainly risible,
and tho front presents a bewildering array of tho
most fashionable garments.
These stores were all inj mod by tho lato fire,
but the damages have been promptly ropaired,
and tho Victoria Range is now one of the most at?
tractive points on the fashionable promenade
CANNED TURTLE.-Tho present age has been
prolific in the invention of ways and means to pre?
serve tho good things of thia fifo beyond their
season. We have been treated to canned fruits
and meats of various kinda which, when opened
are as fresh as when first prepared, lt would
seem that ingenuity had been exhausted, to invent
dishes that needed but tue appliance of a little
heat to make them fit for tho table, but tho field
is large, and new discoveries in tho culinary an
are continually being made. Tho business of pre?
paring these canned dishes baa been ono ot con?
siderable profit, to thc proprietors, aa they have
agenta at every point, and are thus enabled tu
secuto the first of the season. Heretofore tho
North lian enjoyed a monoply ofthis business,
Lut the Southerners aie now aware of then resour?
ces, and will in future control the supply of j
many articles that were once considered Northern
productions.
Mor/Ja is the most prolific State in the Union;
her climato is tropical, and fruits of every descrip?
tion grow in abundance, while her waters teem with
hfe. The fai -larnod grteu /urtlc is a constant
\ iaitor on her coasts and many person]) make their
living by trapping and preparing these mouston
ot thc deep for the market. The Keys and small
islands mir the peninsula are the favorita haunts
of the turtle, and they are captured in numbers by
parties who devote their tinic ta th?H calling. Mr.
E. TATNALL GREEN, ol Cedar Keys, Flu., hi;s pre?
pared the turtle meat for transportation, by en i
closing it in hermetically sealed jars. The meat is
separated from th** fat, all extraneous matter re?
moved, and the edible portions ol* the turtle se?
curely placpd in tho jars. Mr. N. FKHBXKBACK has
received a consignment of turtle meat prepared in
thin manner from Mr. GREEN, and proposes to have
it sampled to-day at his restaurant in Broad atroet.
Wo have no doubt that thc result wijl be satisfac?
tory. and only hopo that the demand will bc so
great aa to induce our merchants to order a largo
supply from tho Land of Flowers.

THE BEST, MOST COMPLETE ANO CHEAPEST
HORSE POWER MANUFACTURED.
In introducing this new Power mt . the mai ket, we
would state that the following are fouie of the advan
tagep possessed by the "LITTLE GIANT" over all other
Horse powers :
I. Its great etreugth on account ct being double-geared,
which not only doubles the streugth by dividing the
strain on twice the number of teeth, but by gearing on
both sides of the wheels it equalizes toe wear on thc
shafts, and materially lessens the friction, enabling the
horses fe do much more work ti.au with any other
POWoi-.
3. Its compactness and extreme portability, it weighing
about onc-hali as much as other Horse Powers, and occu?
pying but one-third the space, it can bc packed in small
boxes, thus saving much expense. It is so simple that
the most ignorant person would have no difficulty in
puUing it together.
3. The facility with which it can be adjusted to any
kind of machinery ot any angle, either on thc ground or
over head, without moving it from its foundation, will
be appreciate! by farmers and planters as specially adapt?
ed for eui? lug Cotton Gins.

I have always recommended the Faber Polygrade
Lead Pencils os the only pencils fitted for both ornam^u
tal and uiathemat'ral drawing; but, after a thorough
trial of the American Polygrade Lead Pencils, mae
utactured by the American Lead Pencil Company, New
York, I find them superior to any pencil In use, even to
the Faber or tho old English Cumberland Lead Pena),
being a superior pencil for sketching, ornamental aid
iure h m M al drawing, au J all the ordinary uses oft kid
pencil.
These pencils are very tlnely graded and have a vary
smooth lead; eveu the sottest pencils hold the point web;
they are all that can be desired in a pencil, lt f.ives ue
great pleasure to be able to assure Americans tost tuvy
will no loui;-r be compelled to depend upon Germany or
?ny other loreign market for pencils.
