BAOSETT A Co., Factors, on Accommodation wharf, received yesterday one bale of sea island cotton from the Point View plantation of Messrs. "WELTON & PATTON, on Cooper River. This cotton is of a superior quality, the staplo being fine, soft and silky. Messrs. WELDON <i PATTON had the honor of sending the first bale last year, and have l>een equally fortunate the present season. Their cot ton is mostly maiured, and the bale sent Messrs. BAGC'-ETT & Co. is but the avant-coureur of similar conaigiunents. DSSTOD'TIONIN GEOBGETOWN.-A correspondent of the Georgetown Times iurn-Bbos tho following information i*ogarding the destitution in that dis? trict :: Mr. Editor ..- I desire to bring to the notice of { the citizens of Geoijretown, the fact, that there are white families in our midst, who are starving. The means which have been furnished nie, through the kindness of friends at a distance, for the relief | of the poor, is expended, and, as I am told, tho government no longer issue rations to tho whites, something ought to bc done at once. Tax FOUBTH COMMANDMENT. -In the present un? settled condition of the country the mind is apt to revert to the "good old times" of the ante-bollum era, and contrast the quiet and order which then reigned supreme, with tho demoralization that now exists. This is particularly noticeable in the desecration of the Sabbath, which has recently be? come quite a common crime, and the day of rest is now made one of enjoyment. In the Testern portion of the city, groups of men and boys collect . in the burnt district and on the vacant lots in tho Upper Wards, and spend the day io playing base haS. Aside from the reprehensible character of j this employment, parties living in the vicinity are 'frequently inconvenienced by the noise and bois leToua language in which tho players indulge. Although Charleston his never aspired to Pori tanisn \ ber citizens have been accustomed to con? sider Sa bbatb-breaking as a crime, and tho muni? cipal aovhoritcs were prompt in suppressing anyatte-np tto engage in secular employments. Since the wa** a chane o has como over, the land, and persons who formerly respected religion, now openly desecrate the day set apart for its observ? ance. Base Ball bia been called an American game, and ito devotees aro to be found in every city, but tho enthusiasm o? this pastime should not lead the clubs to select Sunday for their sport. The complaints from residents in the vicinity of j their grounds have been frequent, but the base ball mania is on the brain, and nothing can induce the players to desist. MITCHEL, Aid-de-Camp BUSINESS ACTIVITY.-A stroll along the principal wharves and business thoroughfares of the city will demonstrate to the most inveterate croaker that the Fall Trade has commenced, and though the receipts of new cotton aro as yet but small, they will increase daily until tho wharves and store? houses are filled to repletion. Tho large whole bale and retail stores are now Boones of busy Ufa. New goods are being constantly received, and the employees aro engaged is opening and displaying them to tho best advantage. A number of corm try merchants havo already visited the city for the purchase of their snppTes, and the boxes to he Been in front of the soveral stores are indications that the visits were not made in vi.in. The mer? chants of this city have exerted every nerve to make tho business facilities of Charleston equal to the past. They have laid in ample stocks, and are prepared to offer t LOT customers the same in? ducements that have made this market popular with the trade. GERMAN IMMIGRATION.-Those ot our readers both heie and in the coto try, who take an interest in tho subject of immigration, will be pleased to learn that a lett? received from Captad MELCH EBS, at Oldenburg, dated August 19, states that a number of emigrants are getting ready to sail on the 1st October. The Bark Gauss, Captain WIK-, TTNO, will positively leave on that day, and Messrs. DELIUS A Co., have promised, that should a suffi? cient number ol emigrants offer, they will send another vessel to Charleston in November or De? cember. Some of the papers and ship-brokers are totally opposed to our scheme, others are in our favor, especially the Bremen Moryenpott, a large daily, and among th? brokers Mr. G. F.
