MATHEW ARNOLD'S "NEW POEMS."
Ticknor & Fields have in press the "New P.>ems'(
of Mathew Arnold. The volume, contama thirty
one different poms, and opens with "Empedoclcs
on Etna," a dramatic poem, which fills tho first
fifty-eight pages, and is followed by "Thyrtis," a
monody to commemorate the author's friend, Ar?
thur Hugh Clough. Those pieces indicat3 gre?t
artistic skill, but thov contain no popular element.
The legend of Saint Brandan is in a different vein
S ALST Uh ANLAS.
Saint Brandan sails tho northern main;
The brotherhoods of saints are glad.
He greets them once, he sails again.
So late ! -such storms ?-The Saint is mad !
He heard across the howling seas
Chime convent bells on win ta y mjhts,
He saw on spray-swept Hebrides
Twinkle the monastery fights ;
But north, still north. Saint Brandan steered;
And now no bells, no convents more!
The hurtling Polar lights are neared,
The sea without a human shore.
At but-lit was the Christmas night.
Stars shone after a day of storm)
He sees float past an iceberg white,
And on it-Christ !-a living form t
'j'hat furtive mien, that scowling eye,
Of hair that red and tufted fell
it ls-O, where shah Brandan fly ?
The traitor Judas, out of bell t
Palsied with terror Brandan sate;
The moon was o right, the iceberg near,
He bears a voice aigh humbly: "Wait I
By high permission I am here.
"One moment wait, thou holy man 1
On earth my crime, my death, they knew ;
My ramo is under all men's ban;
Ah, tell them of my respite too I
"TeU them, one bleaaed Christmas ntjbt
(It waa the first after I came.
Breathing self-murder, frenzy, spite,
To rna my guilt in ondinas flame y
"I fait, aa I ia torment lay,
'Hld the tonia plagued by heave dy power,
An angel touch mine arm, and say:
Oo nanoo, ind cool thyself an hour !
" 'Ah, whence this mercy. Lord V I said.
Tba Leper recollect, said he.
Who asked the passers-by for aid,
In Joppa, and thy charity.
"Than I remembered how I went.
In Joppa, through the public street,
Ona morn, when the sirocco spent
Its storms of dust, with burning heat;
"And ia the street a Leper sate,
. Shivering with fever, naked, old;
Sand ral ad his sores from heel to pat J.
The bot wind fevered bim fivefold
"He gaaed upon me aa I passed,
And murmured, 'Help me, or I die 1'
To the poor wretch my cloak I catt,
Saw bim look eased, and humed by.
"O Brandan, think what grace divine.
What blessing must true goodness shower,
If semblance of lt faint, dke mine,
Hath such inestimable power 1
. -Well-fed, well-clothed, well-friended. I
Did that chance act of good, that one I
Then went my way to hill and lie
Forgot my good aa soon aa done.
"That germ of kindness, in the womb
Of Mercy caught, did not expire;
Outlives my guilt, ou til vea my acorn,
And friends me in the (it ol fire.
"Once avery year, when carola waka.
On earth, the Christmas night's repose.
Arising from the ata?era' lake.
I journey to these healing a^ows.
?I stanch with ice my burning bi east,
With silence hahn my whirling brain.
O Brandan! to thia hoar ot rast,
That Joppau Leper's ease waa pain !"
Tears started to Saint Bran dan's eyes;
He bowed bia head; ba breathed a prayer.
When be looked up-tenanUeee bea

WIST LONDON.
Crouched oo the pavement cioee by Belgrave Square
A tramp I saw, ill. mc ody and tongue-tied;
A babe was In her arms, and at her aide
A girl; their clothes were raga, their feet were bara.
Some taboring men, whoae work lay somewhere there,
Passed opposite; she touched her giri, who hied
Across, aad bogged, and came back satisfied.
Tba rieb abe had let paaa with frozen stare.
Thought I: Above ber state this spirit towers;
Sha will not ask of abena, bat of friends,
Ol aharers rn a common human tate.

Tua unknown Utile from the unknowing great,
And points aa to a better time than ours.
Among the "poems," distinctly BO classified,
those on "The Terrace at Berne," "A Southern
Night," "Rugby Chapel," and "Heine's Grave,"
are especially noteworthy.
Mr. Arnold will probably never address a nation?
al audience, hat he cannot fail to be cherished by
a choice and cultivated class of readers.

NEW ORLEANS, August 3L-Corran-The market
wu characterised to-day by Increased languor. There

further decline predicated in the downward tendency of
the New York and Liverpool marketa inducing the be
lief that lower prices will prevail next week. Hence
the day's transactions have been little better than nomi?
