GEOBOIA STATE LOTTEBT.-The Atlanta papers
fornish the drawing of this Lotten-, which took
place on the 2d September. As a number of oar
citizens have invested, we furnish the statement,
trusting that they have been among the fortunate.
This is not the grand scheme recently atlVertised,
but the combination class No. Bl.
The following wore tho drawn numbers: 78, 52,
22, 27, 25, 70, 72, 05. 55, 34, 1, 21, 09.
Bl'RNINU OK THE REV. A. P. DICKSON'S HOUSE
IN OBANQEBVBG.- -We clip from the Carolina
Times tho following intelligence. Mr. DICKSON
is well Known in this city, and his loss will be de?
plored by a large circle of friends. The Times
says : "We are pained to announco that on Satur?
day last thc dwelling house of the Rev. A. F.
DICKSON was bumed down, together with a large
amount of tho personal effects of himself and
familv. It is believeu to bo the result of accident.
About ll or 12 o'clock in the day tho family in tho
house perceived a heavy smoke, which was found
to be issuing from the shed. Tho alarm was im?
mediately given and efforts rnado to removo tho
things out of the house. A good many things
were saved, the most of Mr. DICKSON'S bocks,
nome articles of clothing and rurniture, while
many articles were lost, which, of course, cannot
be replaced.
As soon as tho alarm was given in the town, the
engines were brought out, promptly manned and
drawn to.the place. Most of the citizens assem?
bled on the spot and gave all the aid they could,
bat nothing could be done to save the building at
that time, although the fire companies, both white
and colored, together with the citrons, displayed
groat zeal and activity.
We understand, that efforts are being made to
give Mr. DICKSON all the assistance possible to
rebuild his house. We hope that a largo responso
will be made, in return for bis eminent services,
throughout tho last twelve months, in procuring
and distributing bread to the needy. It the Dis?
trict let him want, it would deserve everlasting
poverty and starvation.
POINT YTIW.- A pleasant excursion had we yes?
terday, to thia place, on Cooper river, at pres .-nt
planted by and under the supervision and coo rol
of Monars. WELDON & PATTON. WC imbibed a "
?drop," ht a cigar, and took, in company with
Messrs. HALL & I'BAYTON and ou? ot the gentle?
manly proprietors, a surrey of the premises.
Taese gentlernci havo under cultivation some
'?50 acres of SB fine cotton as can be found on the
coast. The growth of tho plant is luxuriant, and
splendidly boiler!.
They have already picked out some 3000 poonda
of cotton, and from the ginned specimens, the
staple) is decidedly fine and of excellent quality.
In regard to the caterpillar, we saw "him,"
but none of that antlered species ethnologically
-deseribed by a gentleman as of the third gene?
ration.
It was a small striped worm-not the army
-worm by any means currently reported, bat of a
species whose ravages are principally confined to
"tho destruction of the leaves, and within an area
.of three or four acres. The bolls have not been
injured in the least, the destruction of the leaves
by uo means indicate injury to the pod. The ten?
dency will be rather from a few warm dry day*
i o hasten tho maturity of tho pod.
^Messrs. WELDON A PATTON are using ovcry cx
ertio.i to destroy thc increase of this " vagrant
pest " ?u? have partially succeeded.
From tho present splendid appearance of the
plant-tho matured bolls-the yield will be abun?
dant.
We are aware ot exaggerated accounts of the
worm. In fact so loue a time has ensued since
caterpillars of any kind had made its appearance
in the low country, on a cotton plantation, that the
old planters scarcely know him, and the present
planters, unacquainted with his wormship, are
terribly frightened by dreadful tales of tho shaie
of a shadow. They should romec.'ber that all
"dangers are not deaths," and nevertheless the
-alaoning representations, the yield of (he staple,
JSIXT it has pasBed away, will be much better
than anticipated. Keep cool, gentlemen, and
don't be frightene J.
In conclusion, we must say we spent a most
stpreeo-ble timo, nevcrtholess caterpillars, ideas of j
country fever, and will be pleased at some future
.day to ren^w the ' Excursion."
THE PALL TBJDE.- The fir1 of September, a*
th? opening of the commercial year, has always
been distinguished hi this city by the signs of life
and activity that were theu apparent in every d??
partaient of business. Though somewhat under
a cloud at present, the Charleston of '67 has the
marne elements that in '59 and 'CO contributed to her
?ucees?, and made her one of the first commercial
cities of the South; and although her energies
i 'tare been cramped from the want of capital, the
ittprovenient that has been effected in her ^undi
tio Bianco the close of the war, is a conducing
proof ol' her corning prosp?rity. The preparations
that Dave t^een male by our wholesale merchants
to accommodate the Fall Trade, are amply suffi?
cient to snppi.v ?J? demands. Great taste bas
been displayed' in'rhe selection of the diffirent
stocks, and the purchaser will find nothing that is
unsuitable for this market. On Hayne and Meet?
ing streets the wholesale merchants have now in
atore, and are in daily rec-ipt of the latest styles
of goods. These are of eriry description, and
they will be seid-not at the lowest market price
but as low as they can be purchased elsewhere.
At the commencement of tho new era the mer?
chants of Charleston had to contend against a
powtrlul opposition, but their endeavors to restore
the former trade of the city have met with a par?
tial success. Freights have been lowered and
new schedules adopted by the railroads. Old
firms have reengaged ia business, new stores
have been opened; and though the horizon is still
dark, the clouds hav J silv -i linings, and the fu?
ture prosperity of Charleston is no longer a
. dream.
Notwithstanding the hea\ v and c ontinuous rains
of the summer the city has never Leen more
healthy, the bilk? of mortality are extremely light,
and the deaths that have occurred are from natu?
ral causes. It baa been tho practice of certain
parties to misrepresent Charleston by stating tbat
fevers and other diseases were prevalent, and thus
?eek to divert the trade into other channels. The
pubhshed statements 1 rom the City Registrar are
a sufficient proof of thc incorrectness of their as?
sertions, and our country friends can visit Charles?
ton without any fear.
The different hotels of the city are gradually
losing their summer appearance ; the hst of arri?
vals is daUy increasing, and though a few of these
may be transient visitors, thc majority an-old mer?
chante who for years have made Charleston their
market and who can be easily induced to purchase
their supplies frort horses that have always ex?
tended them every courtesy and attention. The
receipt of cotton both here aud m thc upper dis?
tricts will cause a revival of business, as the planter
can then meet his liabilities, and the trado between
the different sections become more brisk. With
few exceptions the season has been favorable and
the crops good, and the Fall trade of Charleston
now depends up^n the efforts of her business men
alone.

RANDOLPH GORDON AND OTHER STORIES, by '.Ouida,"
author of "Idalia." "Chandos," "Strathmore," etc.
Seco id Series. Philadelphia : J. B. Lippincot: A Co.
18tr.
We arc indebted io Hr. JOH:; ll. GBEXB. King
strpet, for a copy of this book. As tb? title indi?
cates, th; work before us is a collection of novel?
ettes, written, probably, before the author becamo
kuown to tame. The stories are all of great in?
terest, written in a fascinating style, and will well
repay perusal by those for whom Bf? has no se?
verer duties tbau to read bght amusing stories.
In their tendencies, these tales are somewhat
Frenchy, not as immoral as Count MARMONTEL'H
"MoralT js," but, perhaps, as noarly so as the
difference betwoon tho last century and the pres?
ent, and between France and England would per?
mit. We regret to say that we are unable to
throw any light upon the great problem, that puz?
zles the novel reading public, whether "Ouida"
belongs to tho fair or unfair sex, but we incline to
the feminine theory.
A SIGN OF THE TIMES.-The changes that occur
in the business firms of the city are not unworthy
of note, as they are often proofs to the outside
world that Charleston is still progressing. Tho
wholesale crockery trade of Charleston has, for
years, been conducted on Meeting and Hayne
streets; and before the war the large buildings oc?
cupied by theso firms were filled to their utmost
capacit}-. Since the resumption of business many
changes have been made, both in the names and
location of these stores, but they are still conduct?
ed by 6omo of the old partners, who are thorough?
ly conversant with this Une, and can offer to the
country merchants well selected stocks.
A recent dissolution of copartnership in the
?rm of W. O. WHILD?N & Co. has produced two
stores, Mr. WHTLDEN having roovwi to Meeting
street, nearly opposite Hayne, while Mr. Q. H.
BROW*, his former partner, bas taken No. 19
Hayne street, opposite this office. These stores,
together with that of Mr. W. L. WEBB, in tb j
HORTON building, aro stocked with every article in
their line, and the country trade will have ?io dif?
ficulty in procuring their supplies. Tho whole?
sale stores of Charleston ve ct present fully equal
to those of former days, as the stocks are large
and the goods offered on the same terms as in the
past.
TEE Cm FINANCES.-Since the resolution adopt?
ed at the last Beaaion of Council to cease the issue
of city money, and to receive the amount now out
in payment of taxes, a great appreciation has
taken place in its value. It was formerly far be?
low par, being sold to the brokers at 30 par cent
discount, but, eince the action of Council, uss
been bought at 87} and 90 cents on the dour r. The
employees of ?ho city were, without exception,
paid in this money, and the complaints were so
numerous that some action was necessary for
their relief.
The resolution of Council was designed for this
purpose, but will only benefit s few parties, while
the city will be a sufferer by receiving into ita
treasury money that cannot be turned over again.
The ordinance authorizing tho circulation of
thia scrip was passed aft ir some opposition, but
uss not proved as beneficial as its projectors sup?
posed, few purs ons beyond the brokers deriving
any ultimate benetit from ita provisions.
In Charleston the City-lebt is averaged at $125
per bead and it requires good business tact and
financiering, to meet the interest that is dne. The
experiment of a City currency has tailed; it was
inaugurated for'the relief cf tax payers, and they
sho-jld now come forward, cancel their obbgations
and relieve the City from its present embarass
ment.
WE IX A RN from the Savannah Ntws and
Herald that the body of tbo unfortunate young
lady, Miss B. DALEY, who was accidently drowned
while stepping ashore fr.ira the steamship Herman
Livingston, was recovered Monday morning about
6 o'clock, almost io the procise spot where she
foll from the gangway. The deceased was seven?
teen years of age, and was returning home to her
sister, who was sick. Her father, Mr. MICHAEL
DALEY, has been in the country about five years,
and is well known. Tho deepest regret ia felt by
every one at the unfortunate accident, and we
trust that this lesson will . teach the propriety of
having such gangways that safety of life may be
tully assured. There is no reason why tb? ap?
proach to and from a steamship may not be made
as safe as tho passage up a flight of stairs.
MARTYRS TO CARELESSNESS.-If all teeth
that have been ruined by neglect could be strung
together, they would reach thrice round the world.
There may bave boon some excuse for this havoc
in days gone by, when there was no absolute safe?
guard against dental decay in existence, but there
? no apology for it now. FRAGRANT SOZODONT,
tho world-renowned antiseptic dentifrice, as cer?
tainly protects the tieth against decay, as oil
prevents steel from rusting, or water arrests the
progress of fire. tuthsS Septembers
