DAY AND NIGHT SCHOOL.-A pleasing sign of
the times is the increase in the number of private
schools in the . itv, and tho advantages offered to
those who are unxious to educate their children.
Mr. A. DOTY, Jr., as will be seen by an advertise?
ment in another column, opens his day and night
school, at thc corner of Smith and Radcliffe
streets. This school is well managed, and those
who have heretofore patronized Mr. DOTY, will find
it to their advs.utage to continue the connection.
Mr. DOTY ia thcroughly conversant with his duties,
and understands the art of teaching the young* idea
how to shoot.
THE MEETING STREET RETBEAT.-MESSES. BA
DENHOP A Co.'s NEW REST AUB ANT.-The pathway
of life is a thorny route, re he ved only here and
there by some oasis at which the traveller can re?
pose and forget the troubles that are >efore him.
We have, in our immediate neighborhood, one of j
these green spots, where tho weary can find rest,
and where the turmoil and bustle of tho outer
world are forgotten in the discussion of moro
dainty subjects. To relieve the mind of the reader,
who is doubtless anxious to find the precise locali?
ty of this resting place, we announce at on;e that
Mesara. H. H. BADENHOP & Co. have opened at
their old stand a restaurant, where all that flics,
swims or walks, may be found prepared in the
most aocoeptable manner for either the epicure or
the gourmand. To accommodate the numer?os
guests, of the establishment, booths have been
( erected, and the usual paraphernalia usually found
in first-class eating houses. The Mooting Street
Retreat is so well known that it is useless to de?
scribe it, as, in the words of a bard: ''None named
it but to praise/' T^oso parties who formerly
patronized the lunch- and took their turtle soup
like aldermen, can now have an opportunity of in?
creasing their knowledge, and of testing the com?
pleteness of the cuisine. We know what will be
the result of their researches, and leave them to
the tender mercies of Messrs. BADENHOP A Co.

THE FARVES for Septemba. baa been received.
Thiel monthly is published by ELLIOTT & SHIELDS,
Richmond; also,
THE AMEBICAN FARMER, published in Baltimore,
lr om which we take the following "Horse Reme?
dies," copied from the Turf, Field and Farm:
HEAVES.-There have boon various opinions ex?
pressed by veterinary surgeons in relation to the
heaves, bat we believe it has become a settled
question that it 1B a disease, however, which can?
not be completely cored. The severity of the
disease, however, can be maternity mitiga tec, and
thu following will be found worth tryinr,: Mix
equal parts of pulverized borax and saltpetre, and
give the diseased horse a tablespoonful twice a
day, and every other day a spoonful of sulphur.
Give also hah* a spoonful of copperas twice a
week. Continue true mode of treatment five or
aux weeks.
WOUNDS ON HOBS ES. - One of the best washes
that we kcow of for ordinary wounds on horses is
to take one quarter of a pound of saltpetre, half a
pint of turpentine, and put them into a bottle:
shake np well before using; apply to the wound
-throe times a day with a feather. This we have
heard highly recommended from reliable sources.
SALT AND ASHES FOB HOUSES.-Those keeping
horses should, twice a week, throw in a handful of
salt and ashes. Mix them by putt'og in three
parts of salt to one of ashes. Horses relish this,
and it will keep their hair soft and fine. It will
prevent bots, coho, etc. A Utile ground sulphur,
mixed with salt and ashes, and given once in two
or three weeks, is also beneficial. All domestic
animal? will be thus benefitted.

PROCESSIONS PROHIBITED.-It will be seen that by
an crder from tho Post Commander all processions
are prohibited in' .;.jre unless special permission
is first obtained by the parties, and in all cases
twenty-four hours notice must be given to tho pro?
per authorities. This order will be productive of
great good to the city, as it will at on..- put a stop
to all disorderly gathering, such as torch light pro?
cessions, political parade*:. Ac. These have re?
cently become a great nuisance as they are always
accompanied by a rabble, who do not scruple to
engage in rows, and thus bring discredit on parties
who were peaceably disposed. It is presumed that
the order refeircd to processions of every descrip?
tion*, and even the usual civic parades of the fire
companies are inoluded. It would, however, be an
easy matter for those companies desiring to cele?
brate any dav bv a precession to obtain the requis?
ite permission from tb." authorities, as no distur?
bance has ever resulted from these displays.
The order is not intended to cramp the liberties
of tho citizen, but to deter unruly and disorganiz?
ed mobs from parading through the streets, car?
rying concealed weapons, and committing other
offences against the peace of the city. In Charles?
ton every procession is accompanied by a van?
guard of negroes, both small and large-these arc
always armed with sticks, and excited by the
music, are rife for any disturbance, ami frequently
provoke one for the mere sake of being in a row.
It is this element that has invariably been the
head and front of any offending, and as? it is im
poasible to prevent their presento at any public
parade, or to control them when excited, the order
prohibiting all processions, will have a salutary
effect. Our city has been toe long harrasscd by
the crowds of idle freedmen who gather from all
quarters at the sound ot a drum, and by occupy?
ing the sidewalk and the streets, become a
nuisance not only to the parties participating in
the parade, but to the citizens who are frequently
compelled to make a wide detour to avoid the
?Trowd.
DEATH OF A LOCAL.-Tho last ead o? a local re?
porter ia described aa follows in the Californian:
Bat at last bis own timo came, and JIM DUFFY
was about to die. He wasn't a particle afraid,
notwithstanding all his falsehoods, for he knew it
would help tho local Column ; so he sent all his
relatives down stairs, and got his assistant re?
porter to stand by him, and he made him swear
that he would not give the item to any other paper,
and then, with a serene smile on his face, be
.elded up his life, and JIM DUFFY was no more.
His will was full of items, one of which provided
that be should be buried in Philadelphia, because
it was in Pennsylvania, and a pencil (without a
"vania," however,) had been his favorite tool.
He desired that they should put the last edition
ot the Exaggerator in hie coffin, au A bury him
with the church service that had the greatest
ii umber of superlative adjectives IU it.
DROWNING OF A YOUNO LADT rs 8AVAITNAH.-The
Xetrs and Herald of the 2d says : "As public
I journalists, we are compelled this moaning to
chronicle ono of the most heart-rendinr, disasters
that, we think, bas av-ir happeued ir. Savannah,
aud whioh has laid waste the happiness of a home
and family.
Miss DALEY, a young' lady aged from sixteen to
eighteen years, the daughter of Mr. MICHAEL
DALEY, one of our oldest citizens, accompanied
her father North some time sinco, and while there
was called back by the serious illness of her sister
who resides iu this city. Leaving her father at
New \*ork, slio took passage on the steamer Her?
man Livingston, which, after a safe voyage, arrived |
here last Dight about nine o'clock. Miss DALEY, !
young, and impatient no doubt to greet j
her relative?, was among the first to a tart'
unaided aud alone, to cross the gang
plank, which in the darkness afford?
ed but precarious footing even to those who were
practised and had experience of. its danger?.
When about midway between the vessel and the
wharf, her foot slipped, and without ? cry she fell
! into the dark water beneath, which was rushing
[up with the force of a flood tide, and sustained for
a moment by her clothing, carried her toward the
stern of the vessel, when she Bunk without rising
again. Ont of a crowd on the wharf not one could
be found brave enough to risk their life to save
the drowning girl-a sad commentary os the
selfishness of human nature.
Her shawl and bonnet, we believe, were recover?
ed, and at the hour we write efforts sre being
made with drags to find her body."

OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE i
ALLENDALE, BARNWELL DISTBICT. S. C., ]
Marco 1, 1867. |
Messrs. Little <t Marshall :
GENTLEMEN : I used, during the past tesson, one of j
"Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purchased of you
last September. I have always boen prejudiced in favor
of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in?
duced me to try any other. I take pleasure; however, in
adding my testimony in favor of its entire adaptation to
the wants ot a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my
most sanguine expectations. I have packed with but
two hands, yet I prefer four-two st each lever. My 1
balsa all weighed over 600.lbs. The first lot I sent to
market averaged 562 l:,s. My impression is that 600 lbs.
is about the capacity of the Press, and a greater number
of pounds subject the foilow-block to too much risk, un?
less the sides or the cotton box was increased. It would
add greatly to the value of the Press if the cotton box
was ten inches longer. In hsste, I am, very respectfully,
Your obedient servant, Ac, B. W. LAWTON.
P. S. I took my Press down and carried it some four
miles to pack the crop of a neighbor, who failed to nave
a "Screw" built; he waa so much pleased that he has
determined to abandon the-"Screw" and purchase "In?
gersoll's Press." B. W. !..
OFFICE or KING'S MOUNTAIN RAILROAD COMPART, 1
YoRZvrxxx, 8. C., April 10, 1887. I
GENTLEMEN : I nave Just received your letter ot Feb
mary 14th-upon my return to this place, after azt ab?
sence of two months-and this reply may be too late for
your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press."
The Press I used m packing my cotton last year
worked admirably, packing, with esae from 500 to 635
lbs. With good active hands to work it, I am satisfied
that from eighteen to twenty halos might readily bs
packed ta a day.
This Pr.'ss combines the advantages of lightneu, and
consequent portability and Kiropliciry (being easily man?
aged b, any one af ordinary lntelUgence). Great com?
pressing force, with little motive power, and "last, but
not least," it i? worked entirely by band, thus saving for
the farm horses the hard labor Imposed upon them by
the use of the ordinary "Screw."
respectfully, Ac, yours, E. M LAW.
