During the past week, we learn from the Herald of AugtiBt 30, there were in Now York sixty cases of contagious diseases, of which eight were fa'.al-three cholera: one variola.; six diptheria ; eleven typhoid aud five typhus (both here marked contagious); twelve scarlatina, and twenty-one measles. THE G?OBGIA LOTTEEY.-Thia lottery was inau? gurated for benevolent purposes, and has been conducted in a satisfactory marmor by tho pro? prietors. It has hcDH a favorito with tho public, and the rapid sales of tickets is a conclusive proof of its success. The schemes have been arranged for the benefit of all parties wishing to invest, and thoso who have sought to repair their fortune by this means are satisfied that their loss or gain is not the result of any collusion betweon the parties and agents. The company have recently prepared a great extra scheme with a capital pi izo of $20, 4300, to be drawn at Atlanta on the 4th. It is too late to make an investment at present, but similar schemes will be soon presented to the publie, and we advise all whonvish to try their luck, to invest $1, and they can prove tho truth of Ihe old saying that ''fortun?is blind." The dog days aro upon her, and thc stock of ice is exhausted, from early uiom till dewy eve anxious oyes are scanning the horizon to see if there is any ice vessel below. The Savannah papers are peculiarly mournful o.'er this dearth of ice, and they write in lugubrious strains about th?.ir hapless lot. The locoh dream of Greenland's icy mountains, and sip h for the days of cool drinks, for juleps and cobblors are with thom now bnt things of tbe past, as they are condemn? ed to take theirs ht '. ?nd are in a truly deplorable condition. leo is no -longer a luxury but a neces? sity, and onr Savannah brethren have our heart felt sympathy iu their present destitution. To the Editor of the Dn?y Xews : We .ve a rery peculiar pcoplo in Chailcston; at regular intervals we hr.ve spasmodic hopes about tho future greatness of Mie city, to bo brought about by building' a low miles of railroad, and theso hopos are never realizod. We romembcr, when tho "Memphis" and tho "Xashvillo"' Roads wore undor construction, how wo warmed up and spasmodically paid down a cool million in gold to hurry them through, and how very chilli/ we felt ?when we found the "Wostorn and Atlautic Rail? road" just in between us and our million dol?an, and oui-6xp'cted trade-we stood in Charleston and looted over wjat wo thought was ai) unbroken Railroad conneotion to th ? Mississippi River at Memphis, and ( o the O.?o River at Louisville, Ky., bnt wo could get nothiug from ^his great coun? try becauso controlling interests were against us, and are so now, and learned, too late, that wo h ad paid our money too hastily. To correct our miliion-of-dollars-blunder, we are now told that the best route to Memphis, and through Nashvillo to Louisville, is to run a rail? road from Atlanta,Ga., to Decatur, Alabama. When you look at the map now, you exclaim what folly ! to have helped build a road through Chattanooga, as it turns out in tho interest of Norfolk, and to Hud, after a million is misspent, and too years of | timo is lost, that W3 must build tho Atlanta and Decatur road, to put ourselves right, .his road, when built, will bc but the prolongation, on nearly an air hue of thc great "Georgia Railroad,'' with which the South Carolina Railroad is in necessary alliance-and when built, Charleston an*3 Memphis will be really united-and we may then count on thc Cottons of North Alabama and Tennessee. Wo are favored, now-a-days, with another inviting Echeme. Sonio enthusiastic writer, standing at Macon, and looking towards Charleston, ha3 dis? covered that it wou:d be a grand tiling to have sixty nubs of railroad between Millen and Saikabatchie Depot, on tho Charleston and Sa? vannah Railroad, and everybody eayn amen! It is a self-evident prop~.ition that it is a shorter line to Charterten fro.r? Mar?n than any other that it is in the prolongation oi' almost au air lino from Yicksburg, on tho Mississippi River, to Charleston, and that great results would follow, not the building o? tho road, but tho practical working of it, in the interest of Charleston. How is that to bo accomplished? Suppose, by a mira? cle, this track from Salkabitehie to Millen should be discovered to be laid to- lay and ready for the trains, and suppose a train of cars, with ?oods for Jtlacsm. Columbus, Montgomery, and other points, should ?eave Charleston, what would be thy prac? tical result? When it reached Millen, President WASLEY, of the Central Road, wouli' likely bo there, with a similar train from Savannah, which would go "through" While your Charleston train would be twitch! d into a Depot and tho cars un? loaded. Now if this is, what may be very reason? ably expected, what good will Charleston get ont of the sixty mdes ui new road i Wc see nothing bnt disappointment, for the cotton from Macon for Charleston will be thrown out at Millen, while that for Savannah will go on without breaking bulk. We write not in opposition to tho "Millen branch ;" we thiik it a great work for Charleston ; but beforo Charleston invest** ono cent in it, we ?want to know if wo arc to "break bulk" at Mdlen, and Charleston should pause for a reply to that question. Tho Haversack rightly named-is a repertoire of army anecdotes, the perusal of which recalls tho happy days when the joyous spirits of the Confederacy enlivened the weary hours of camp and field lifo by jeu <.respr?s, which, if not polished, wore always to the point. Tho anecdotes in the Haversack are from all sections of tho late "so-called," and the ex Confed can whilo away his time agreeably and fight j over his old battlos by their perusal. It is ono of the best features in this popu'ur magazine, ac tho material is carefully selected and arranged by thoso who aro familiar with tho subject. Thc Land We love is published at Charlotte, N. GnASS BATTEAU REGATTA.-Among tho plea? sures to be enjoyed during thc present month, few are more attractive th an aquatic sports. The cool and pleasant breozos which now toll of tho gradual decay of summer, tempt those who eau sparo an hour from their duties, to devote it to enjoyment, and the excitemont and exhilaration produced by a sall around the harbor, is too pow? erful an incentivo for recreation to be long re? sisted. The amatour yacht races of the past summ er were witnessed and participated in by many, who did not consider thc time devoted to healthful sports as misspent. A number of gentlemen of this city wishing to revive the interest that was once felt in these sports, havo determined to form a grand Batteau Regatta, which all who feel so disposed co lld attend. Those who design entering their boats, are advised to put them in order, as the raco will take place in about ten days' timo. Al? ready considerable interest has boon manifested on the subject, and it is expected that the pro? posed regatta will be ono of the events of tho sea? son. The boats will start from Wost Point Mills, and sail around Fort Ripley, returning to tho Mill. A prize wiil be awarded to the successful boat, and other inducements offered to make tho occasion interesting to participants and specta? tors.
