ABBEST OF THETVES_On last Friday, Lieut.
HENDRICKS was notified that a robbery had been
made of two watches from the promises of Mr.
FLASH, jeweler, in King street. The case was put
in the hands of officers DA\?S and CALDW ?LL, who
soon succeeded in arresting thc theives aa 1 re?
covering a portion of the proporty. Tho robbery
was o fleeted by two colored boys, ono of whom
named Ton)', had beon confined in jail for stealing,
and had only been discharged thc day before.
READ STEELE'S ADVERTISEMENT.-Wo aro satis
od that no disappointment can accrue to any one
who buys hats from STEELE. Or1 v think that ho
has been covering heads (born without hats) for
twenty-five years; we wiU havo to Btop recom?
mending him as our young friend, and say our
old, well tried friend. His being a Sou h Caro?
linian, wo hope, wont bo a preventative to any ono
in want of a good hat, purchasing from him. To
make sure that you get into tho right store, look
for the "Big Hat" hanging over tho door.
FIRE, MARINE AND LIFE INSTO ANCE COMPANY.-Tho
number of Insurance Companies that hare recent?
ly been started is singular, and only tobe accent?
ed for from the knowledge that all persons 1'ko to
Beoure their investments by insurance. Tao Fire,
Marino, Life and Banking Company, of Richmond,
was organized in February, and commenced busi?
ness in last Juno with a capital cf $308.206* 45.
This Company insures property of every desorp?
tion, and on terms that aro most favorable to thc
insurers. It possesses a great advantage over
many of its competitors in being a new company,
having sustained no losses. Mr. J. L. HONOUR is
the agent for tho Company in this city, and will bo
pleased to gifo any information to applicants.
A CAROLINA TIGER.-Our friend and neighbor.
Mr. H. H. BADENHOP, has become the fortunate
possessor of a splen(l:d specimen of a wild cat.
This anima] was captured by a negro and purchas?
ed by Mr. B., not with the intention of Boning up
wild cat cutlets for lunch, but merely to be added
to his menagerie. Like most of the foh'uo race, ho
is extremely spiteful, and dislikes extremely bis
cramped position. There is little necessity to say
hands off, for every visitor is convinced that ho is
tho tiger that scratches, and kocp at a respectful
distance. Wo advise all students of natural history
to -visit friend BADENHOPS saloon to-day, at ll A.
M., and they can not only seo tho noble beast iu
aH its glory, but find that tho best ant it o Je to a
scare can be obtained at tho same place.
A NEW FLEM.-There is perhaps no surer sign
of enterprise than the multiplication of business
firms, and this is especially the case wben tho co?
partnership is foi .ned by parties identified with
the interests of tho place. A copartnership of
this sort has recently been formed in. this city.
Messrs. HOLM IS & MACBETH havo opened a gen?
eral brokerage and commission business at No. 36
Broad street These gentlemen, though young in
years, arc old businoss men, and bring to tho new
firm the oxporlcnce ga;ied by an association with
the oldest commercial houses *a tho city. Wo
comm and tho firm of HOLM IS & MACBETH to tho
patronage of tho public, and trust tho day is not
tar distant whon tho stores of Charleston will b)
occupied by partios having the samo energy and
business experience. ?,

DANGER or ARTESIAN WELLS.- There aro few
inventions that havo taken a firmer hold on tho
public mind than that of artesian wells, and it has
now become the ambition of o very man to mako
bis own wolL This has been done by simply
driving a watering pipe into tho ground a suffi?
cient number of foot to roach tho water; by tho
uso of a force pump the sand is soon drawn from
this pipe and a sen Iceable well is secured. Since
this plan was discovered Humorous wells have
been mado, par Lice'arly in cities Hbo Chai loston,
where a supply of good water is needed. Thcso
wells were first commenced on Broad streot, but
are now to be seen in almost every port of tho city,
and have been constantly used for tho purposo of
watering the streets.
The attention of the City Engineer has boen re?
cently called to the number of thoBO wells and the
dangers that might ariso from the;r constant usc.
A communication was made by him to tho City
Council at their last meeting (at tho suggestion of
the Mayor), showing that in timo a vacuum would
be formed-that would not only endanger the pave?
ments and sidewalks, but would eventually under?
mine the foundations of tho houses. Accidents of
this character have a'-eady occurred in Western
cities, and it was considered tho part of wisdom
to Lave the case investigated boforo any injury
was inflicted on property. Thc Engineer proposed
in his communication to take soundings of tho
land on which parties proposed to sink thcso wells,
and thus determine if tho soil was of sufficient
strength to support tho strain caused by tho
vacuum. With certain stratas (hero would bo no
danger, but a .-andy soil would soon Kcttlo and
cause a destruction of property, and it was for this
reason that an inspection was recommended. Tho
subject was referred to tho Committee on Streets,
but we would advise parties who intend sinking
these wells to postpone operations outil they learn
what report has been made.
MEETING OF THE DEPOSITORS OF THE CHARLESTON
SAV INOS INSTITUTION.-Pursuant to a call mado in
the papers, a largo number of depositors in this
institution met last night, at METER'S Hall, corner
ofKlngandSocioty streets, to disouis tho aff.virs
of the institution, And docido upon somo concert
of action in relation to it.
E. M. WHITING, Esq., was called to thc Chair,
and Messrs. JOSEPH WHYTE and A. SECKENDOEF re?
quested to act os Secretarios. Mr. WHITING stated
that tho object of tho meeting was to docido upon
somo co orso to bo pursued in tho present state of
affair.
A motion was mado that a committco bo appoint?
ed to wait upon tho Hon. HENRY BUIST, aud re?
quest him to address tho meeting upon tho points
in question. The Choir appointed Messrs. BERG?
MANN and MENCKE, who waited on Mr. BUIST.
After a short abjenco, they returned with that
gentleman te tho hall. During tbo<r absence tho
mooting was addressed by Mr. JACOB SCHTRMER,
Secretary of tho institution, who gave a cloar and
lucid account of tho affairs of tho institution. Thc
Hon. HENEY BUIST thon replied to the invitation
ho had received, and spoko at somo length, stating
that he was thc solicitor of several of the deposi?
tors, and it was their intention to refer tho matter
to tho Court of Equity rather than go into bank?
ruptcy.
Tbe following resolutions wero then adopted:
Resolved, That it is tho opinion of this mooting
that the most proper courso has beon pursued by
taking tho affairs of tho Charleston Savings Insti?
tution into thc Court o? Equity, aud th t thc so?
licitors instituting this step jril! do everything in
their power for tho oqnity and interest of all thc
depositors.
On motion it was
Resolved, That tho thanks of the meeting bc
tendered to the Hon. Henry Buist for his attend?
ance; also to Mr. Jacob Schinuor and thc Presiden!
and Secretaries of tho meeting.
Resolved, That tho proceedings bo published ir
the daily papers.
The meeting then adjourned.
ArcnoN SALK OF DRY GOODS.-Mosers. KILROY &
Co. advcrtiso iii another column that they will sell
to-day a fine assortment of doinostie dry and fancy
goods. An opportunity now presents itself that is
rarely offered, and we advise all who wish to spend
their money with satisfaction to thomsolvos to
visit Messrs. KILROY &, Co.'s sales rooms and in?
vest their spare chango.
MAYOR'S COURT, July 31.-An unusual silenco
has brooded OTO? thia abode of justico for 6ome
days, and the sanctity of tho Court has been un?
disturbed by thc appearance of a single criminal.
Thia would argue an exalted stato of morality in
tho City by tho Koa if one did not know that tho
culprits wero genera!iy spasmodic in their attend?
ance. Tho present i? act may last a few days, but
tho evil spirits will noon recommence their incanta?
tions and cause tho dockets to bo filled with tho
names of many old customers.
WATERMELONS 1 WATEKJU?LONS!- Thoro is no
fruit that is moro summerish in name and taste
than tho watermelon. Its rich luscious pulp melts
in the mouth, and when properly iced it is a dish
fit for a king. Somo caro is r<?quirod iu solccting
theso fruit to obtain only those that aro perfect
and souud. But T^r.* persons aro connoisseurs i^i
tho matter, and ;t is generally loft to tho skill of tho
doaler. Richard McHuuny has always at his
stable, in Hasel strcot, opposito the postoffico, a
large and frosh supply of Augusta Melons. Theso
aro proverbially good, and thoso sold by McHunny
aro warranted to bc tde best.
GOOD NEWS FOB TB .: I ?DIES.-Wo invito atten?
tion to tho advertisement of Messrs. Louis COHEN
S? Co., in another column. Mr. COHEN has associ?
ated Mr. DAVID BFNTSCHNEB with him in the dry
goods business, and is now prepared to offer to the
public a largo and varied stock, comprising every
article in tho cVy goods linc. The pricos of those I
articles have all been lowered to suit tho depres?
sion in the money market, and aro now offered at
very low rates. As shoppers are proverbially woll
posted on a'1 points where bargains aro to bo ob
tainod, wc refrain ?~om any further remarks, leav?
ing tho subject w ;th thc ladies, who, we know, wil
be sufficiently curious to test tho ti nih of Mr
COHEN'S assertions.
To the FAUor of the Daily Kew :
Mu. EDITOR: JU thc ieport of IV o few remarks
that I m ule on Tuesday evening, at Hibernian
Hall, your roportcr has reprcsouted mo as uttoring
the fo"ovwng sentiment:
'.It may bo that many have como hore for thc
purpose of aiding and abetting tho President's
policy; but thoso only are true to tho country who
favor the Congressional policy of reconstruction.''
I do not desiro to givo to my unpremeditated re?
marks an importance which they do not merit; but
every man who says anything, is of corrse desi?
rous that his words should bo correctly reported.
The languago used by mo was as fo'lows:
"Tho Exocutivo system has boen given up by
tho President himself. Thcro is thon no legal,
constitutional modo of gelling back into tho
Union, unless we adopt the congressional system."
I nm indebted to your reporter for tho substan?
tially coiToct synopsis that ho has given of tho
rost of my remarks, but I will esteem it a favor if
you can afford a placo in your columns to this cor?
rection.
