ARREST AND TRIAL OF THE PRICE MURDERERS.
The Augusta papers contain an account of tho ar?
rest and trial of certain parties implicated in the
murder of Mr. PRICE, of South Carolina, near
Quaker Springs. The Chronicle & Sentinel says

Mr. PRICE, near Quaker Springs, had a preliminary
examination before Judge MCLAWS yesterday. One
of the negroes made a full confession, giving the
names of all the parties engaged in the murder.

To SES OURSELVES AS OTHERS SEE Us.-The
Scottish bard wished in vain for this gift; but if ho
had lived in the present day his desire would have
been gratified, and he could have secured his
representation in a short time. There are few arts
that have made auch rapid strides as that of pho?
tographing, and the sun's rays are now made to
produce results that at most seem magical. The
desire arning mankind to give their features to
posterity is universal, and the picture galleries in
every city are visited daily by numbers for this
purpose. Some of these photographers are vete?
rans in the profession, and have gained a high
reputation as artists; but few can compete with
Mr. GEO. S. COOK of this city, and his gallery in
King street is always crowdod by parties desirous
of having their features faith Tully delineated.
IMPORTANT TO MERCHANTS.-Since tho night
trains have been re-established on tho South Caro?
lina Railroad the trafic between this city and
other points has been largely increased and the
accommodation thus presented to merchants has
enabled thom to make shipments with promptness.
The Southern Express Company has never been
behind tho age, but has always endeavored to fa?
cilitate business men in their engagements. In?
fluenced by those motives they have recently placed
messengers on the night trains between t'iis city
and Augusta, who are prepared to take charge of
all goods intrusted to them. This action on the
part of the Express Company will provo very ac?
ceptable to our merchants, both now and during
the fall trade, for shipments of money or gx>ds
can be made with caro and a prompt delivery en?
sured. ,
A CORRESPONDENT of the Darlington Southerner
gives the following account of the accident men?
tioned in the telegraph column of yesterday's is?
sue:
y "This morning about 5 o'clock ?. M., the pas?
senger train ran over and lulled two yoong women.
The accident occurred near the public road, on the
west aide of Sparrow Swamp, as the morning train
waa going to Kingsville. The names of the unfor?
tunate ones were MARTHA and SUSAN DOBITHT. It
appears that they had been out until a late hoar at
night and started home, and stopped to rest awhile
on the track of the Wilmington and Manchester
Railroad-fell asleep, and was ran over as above
stated, killing SUSAN instantly, and horribly
mangling MARTHA, who survived a few hours, to
tell the dreadful story.
"A. B. BRISTOW, Esq., summoned a jury of in?
quest, who, after investigating the matter, ren?
dered a verdict according to the above facts."
Dis MODENWELT.-The first number of this
beautiful Fashion Journal has just been received
from Europe, and in its salutatory says: The great
difficulty in getting a correct translation has caus?
ed the delay. The papers will be translated in*, o
English, and give more of the useful than all the
other illustrated papers put together. Each pa?
per gives eight pages of finely executed cuts,
representing monthly everything in the way ot
dress that is beautiful and to be desired by tho
ladies. In addition to the papers there is a finely
executed pattern sheet, giving during the year
somewhere between three hundred and four hun?
dred finery drawn patterns well explained and
easily to bo taken oft The superiority and
utility of these patterns will soon be seen and
appreciated by those who have been in the habit
of getting plain or trimmed patterns from some
of our common pattern shops.
As the Modemodl is from the very seat of fash?
ion, it will become a popular magazine with the
ladies. The subscription price is only $3, and it
will eoon be found at every well conducted news'
yBtand.
THE FALL TRADE.-In a few weeks the Fall trade
of Charleston will open, and though it will not
compare with that of former years, yet it is ex?
pected to be an improvement on that of last
spring. Throughout the whole country the crops
are good, and some sections that have heretofore
been noted for their sterility have prodnoed abun?
dantly, and there ?ill even be a surplus for expor?
tation. This result is extremely gratifying not
only to the planter, but to the people at home, as
all are affected by Iiis success or ill luck. The de
-pression caosod by the failure of last year's orop
has been removed and if the right steps are now
taken the State will soon regain her former pros?
perity, and Charleston become again a large com?
mercial city. The merchants of Charleston have
always been considered an active and enterprising
olass, and have used every effort to promote the wel?
fare of the city. Before the war this was compara?
tively easy, bot tho subsequent destruction of pro
Iporty, and the break on tho railroads, turnod the
trade into other channels, and as soon after the
surrender as practicable tho New Ycrk houses
it drummers into the country, who wero cm
Dwered to bring the trade to that city-. Induce?
ments were offered that few could resist. They were
lot pressed for old debts, and were sold goods on
ie-. Charleston was then in no condition to
'compete with the parties, although sho has since
endeavored to regain some of her lost trade, but
the high freights and other causes have operated
against her.
We learn from a gentleman of this city who has
just returned from the country that thc prospects
are fair for a good trade; but tho Northern drum?
mers have been every where, and have mads such
representations that many will purchase their
goods in New York. None deny that Charleston is
in every respect equally as good a nnrket as Now
York, and that goods can be bought hero fully as
cheap; but there have been fow drummers sont
ont from Charleston, and no inducements offered
to secure the trade. This has operated badly; for
many who still retain their affection for this city
think that it is not the market it was, and go to
other points to purchase their goods. It should
be the duty of the merchants to correct thoso
misapprehensions, and to show that they arc not
only prepared to sell on favorable terms, but have
full stocks, which embrace every article ncedod by
the trade.
Preparations are now being mado for the fall
trade, a few country morohants, the van guard of
the army, have already arrived, and Hayno and
Meeting streets and East Bay will soon ahakc off
the lothargy that has characterized them during
tho summer, and become again busy bustling
thoroughfares. Tho stocks in every store aro full
and complete, and visitors will find that thc prices
are the same as those askod in other cities. It has
been decided among the merchants to lower the
tariff M much aa possible, and to ask a uniform
price for a certain standard of goods. Tb is will
be a great advantage to tho buyer, and will facili?
tate the transaction of business. Tho city is per?
fectly healthy, and every elomont seems favorable
to a good trade. Our country friends can visit us
with safety, and will soon be convinced that
Charleston presents every advantage to a buyer,
and can compete with any city North or South as
Oj market.

The facts in this case aro familiar to mos

lt was contended that the rule requiring <
steepiemen to take a lamp should have been i
forced, and that the steeple should have been

UNITED STATES COUBT IN ADMIRALTY-Jud
BRYAN Presiding.-JAMES REGAN VS. Captain Li

the Mate. This was a libel for assault and batte
on the high seas. United States Attorney COBBI
was proctor for the libellant, and Messrs. A. ]
BBOWN and W. E. MOCKI.L were proctors for i

In tho case of RICHARD ARNOLD va. the steam
Moneka, libelled for damages to freight, heal
some time since, the following order was made :
Bichar? Arnold va. Steamship Moneka.
The claim in this case is for tho value of tn
horses, one dying at Bea and tho other on hindi nj
and for damage done to a third with expenses ii
cident to his care and cure, and the expenses i
bringing said horses to Charleston iho libel
tiled against the Moneka aa a common carrier,
ia admitted tbat the Moneka is a common carrie
and that the horses did die, and that tho thir
was injured. But it is contended that though
common carrier, the liability was limited by
special contract, and if not relieved from Uabilil
by such contract, yet that the loss and damag
were caused by the peril of the sea and the inev
table consequences of a gale.
Upon a most careful examination of tho law an
evidence in this case, the Court is satisfied tin
the respondent has failed to make out the i ^pre?
contract agroonent or stipulation which tho la
makes necessary to limit his liability.
But granting that such stipulation, agre em cr
or express contract wero made out, it could nc
shield the vessel from its own acts and givo hi
puni tv to negligon .<> or misconduct, or relieve th
ship from losses accruing from such negligenco c
misconduct.
The Court is satisfied that the death of the tw
horses and the injury to the third is properly rc
ferable to the unskilful, unsufficient stowage, an
not to the gale.
It is, therefore, ordere1 and decreed that th
owners of the Moneka do pay to tho libellant
three hundred dollars for each of the horsos dvin
as aforesaid, and three hundred dollars for dam
ages dono to tho surviving horse, and tbo charge
incident to bis keeping, and cure, and the loss o
his service; also, one hundred dollars for the ex
pensos incurred in bringing out tho Horses-in al
the sum of ono thousand dollars, with costs o

STIMULANTS INDISPENSABLE AS MEDI?
CINES.
The most distinguished physicians in tho United States
havo recently been placed on tho witness stand, and
havo, with ono voice, declared that pure stimulants oro
valuable medicinal agents. Thia decision of thc faculty
refers especially to medicated stimulants, of which tho
purest and the best at present known ls HOSTETTER'S
STOMACH BITTERS. Its basis is tho alcoholic prin?
cipio of the finest rye grow n in the United States, and its
herbal ingredicnta comprise the extracts of a largo num?
ber of plants, barks and roots produced in various parts
of the world, and all noted in thc countries to which
they are indigenous for their powerful sanativo proper?
ties. As an iuvigorout and tonic, thc value of the Bit?
ters can scarcely be overrated. Hence its extraordinary
effect in fever aud ague and intermittents and remit?
tents of every type. Its anti-bilious properties are mar?
vellous. F .THOUS of bUious habit by taking a small
quantity once or twice a day, may completely chango
their constitutional tendency to liver disease, and escape
aU the unpleasant consequences which arise cither from
the undoo sensitiveness cr the unnatural torpidity of the
biliary organ. Chronic constipation is eradicated
thoroughly and in a very short space of time by small
doses of this wholesome regular, taken night and
morning ; and for all the disorders which aro superin?
duced by exhalations from decomposing vegetable and
animal matter in the streets of cities, or the miasma of
swampy districts; it is, when taken as a protective and
preventivo medicine, the most reliable of all safeguards.
