The records or tho Provost Court on Edislo and Wudmalaw Islands, show that Gadsden, Maiiigsult, Lance and Juhm-on worn among tho plaintiffs in a cause against H. Yan Holtun, which was tried on the 31st or January last, and judgment rendered for tho plaint III.-. Thc decree of lite court awarded thc plaintiff's, eleven in number, Ibo sum of ono hundred and eighteen dollars and ninety-live cents, and, iu de? fault of payment, thc cotton of the defendant was seized, and six bundrcd and eighty-seven (G97) pounds of stone cotton was delivered to Bowen, as counsel of thc plaintiff', by tho Clerk of tho Pro? vost Court. The freedmen allego that tboy authorized Kowen to have the fulton prepared for market and sold, and that bc bas not accounted to them for tho pro? ceeds of the cale. During tba investigation of thc foregoing charges against Bowen, complaints were m m lo to mn by a number of freedmen at Wadmalaw and Ediato Islands of transactions of a similar character to thal last cited, sumo of tho complainants alleging that they had received nettling from tho proceeds of thc eales of their cotton by Bowon, and others, that he had bnt partially accounted to them for such rrocccds. In all of these casca tho complainants alleged that the cotton had boon recoived from Ibo Clerk of tho Brui ost Court, in satisfaction of judgments rendered against H. Van Holden, Charles ll. hai? ley, and Julian Hailey, and that Bowon was coun? sel for plaintiffs.
