PERSONAL.-Col. R. BARNWELL RHETT, Jr., and lady, arrived yesterday from Huntsville, ala?, and are staying at the Mills House. GUNNY BAQOLNO.-MCSSI s. JOHN G. MILNOR & Co. yesterday sold for a tah, on account of the un? derwriters and all concerned, 25 bales of ganny bagging, as follows : 5 bales at 24$; 10 at 24, and 10 at 23| cents. Mr. C. C. BOWEN, lately sent to Castle Pinckney by tho military authorities, was released on Mon? day afternoon, opon depositing a som of money sufficient in amount to cover the alleged claims against bim. and executing a bond for his appear? ance. Binar.? I SICKLES I-The march of improvement is nowhere more visible than in the upper part of King street, and few establishments on this street can vie with MARSHALL'S hardware store at No. 810. In addition to the former complete stock a fresh supply has been recently received, embrac? ing every variety of agricultural and mechanical instruments. Hr. MARSHALL bas endeavored to keep up with the spirit of the finies, and has im? ported a number of sickles that will be found ex? tremely useful to the farmers in gathering then crops. It would be an endless task to enumerate the articles in Mr. MARSHALL'S store, and we refer our readers first to the advertisement, and then to No. 810. FORTUNATE ESCAPE. -Mr. C. F. STEINME TER, bro? ther, and Mr. BECKMAN, were returning yesterday from the plantation of the latter, on Ashley River, in their pleasure boat, the Lizzie, when they were struck by a sudden squall which came up from the northeast. The boat was immediately capsized and the gentlemen thrown into the water. Fortu? nately they were enabled to get on the bottom of j the boat, bot it was in a lonely part of the river, and they drifted with the tide until they reached a flat tied to the new bridge, where they received assistance from some colored men. The party ware in the water for nearly two hoars, and their escape ia almost pro vid ntial, when it is remem? bered how many sharks are usually caught in tho Ashley River. AH EOONOKICAL lea HOUSE.-During the present intenso heat it is extremely difficult to preserve ice from melting, and it becomes necessary to in? vest largely in order to Becnre the correct temper? ature: A contrivance bas been recently invented that will not only affect a great saving of ice, but is so simple as to be in the reach of a IL It consists of a stone jar placed upon and snrrounded with a bed of rosin, the whole contrivance being enclosed in a box. Ii is easily made, the bed being first made of rosin in the box, the jar placed upon it, ind then melted rosin poured into the box, thus ailing np completely all of the interstices. It is a very simple and cheap contrivance, and can be easily made by-any hoasekeeper. By its use they caa save at least fifty per cent, of the amount of | ice now used in a day. A mr AT CORRESPONDENTS.-We find the follow? ing good "hit" in an exchange. Those who have been in the **noospeperB business, and have ever been afflicted, will appreciate it : A publisher of a paper made arrangements with a maa in a neighboring town to furnish him with news items from that locality. The result of the arrangement is as follows, and was rather startling to thc editor : "There ia not much noos around here yit, but there is a littuL A man had hie bed cut in a fite last ni te, the doctor ees if he dont git well before mornin, that he will nev to die sanin; he leves 1 small wife and family. Another man is sick and I guess he's got the kolery but sum people say hie wife pizened him, the doctor kant tell yit, but when he dies they are goin to bold a post morling over him. Another manas horse dide last nite. He could eat moar than anny 5 kattul round, and since he dide oats bev gone down tu a?nta on a bushel. This is all the noos here now. Don't for git to send a paypur. "Torrs KORISPONDENT.'' SERIOUS ACCIDENT.-On Sunday evening last, about dark, it youth in Market street indulged in the lasitimf bat not altogether safe pastime of "riding on s rafi;" the rail being that of a banis? ter. He lost his balance, and a young lady rela? tive, sitting in the piazza at the time, observing it, ran np to his rescue; bot he was too heavy, and hy hie weight unfortunately dragged her over, and both fell from the second story upon the flags, about twenty feet. Both were insensible. Dr. E. H. Kar.Tjras was at once sent for, and soon after Dr. F. M. ROBERTSON. The young man suffered considerably from contusion and shock, but is now ont of danger. The young lady was more seriously injured. On examination she was found io have a fracture of the clavicle, and a violent contusion of the head. She was considere 1 in a very critical condition for forty-eight hours, but, we believe, is now pronounced out of danger by the attending physician. THE MENDENHALL Loon AND THE MANTTFAO TUBLNG PEOSPEOTS or CHARLESTON.-Since the at? tention of the South has been turned to the dove! opinent of her mann factoring res oui-ces there havo been companies formed and factories started in different States, and the busy him of the ma? chinery is now a familiar sound. So far this State has received bot little benefit from this source, the attention of the people being turnee! solely to agri? cultural pursuits ; the factories wei-o few and far between, and it was only in certain districts that any attempt was made to introduce the now doc? trine. Since the war this has all changed, and every on', now seems desirous to. improve their condition oy every means in their power, bat par? ticularly to develop the manufacturing interests o their section. Fortunately at this time a new and powerful agent has been produced, that bids fau? te do more toward reconstructing tho country than any other. We refer to the MENDENHALL Hand Power Loom, to which mention bas already been made ; wherever it has boen introduced it has wrought a wonderful change by infusing Ufe and energy into the people and destroying that apathy that had settled upon every one. The patent right has been sold in most of tho Southern States, and bas proved s source of wealth to the purchasers, for they have resold the right to counties and districts, and the manufacture of th 3 looms has opened a branch of industry here? tofore unknown. Tho-most encouraging reports have been received from these States, and the stock ht companies that have been formed has already risen above par. We have in a previous issue stated the pember advantages of this loom, aa compared with others, and will not allude to them at present, but simply desire to call tho at? tention of capitalists to the invention, and show to them that by purchasing the right for this State and North Carolina, they will securo an invest? ment that, properly managed, will yield them a large revenue. By purchasing this right Charleston would soon be built up, "her waste places would bo made glad, and the desert would blossom like the rose." It ja useless to refer to the failures of tho past, that js dead, and should be forgotten, but the future is bright, and if opportunities like the present are sot neglected, it will far surpass the fondest dreams of both the enthusiast and the practical jjaa?, Charleston bas every facility that is pos? sessed by her sister cities, and needs but energy yul application to make her surpass them. Au? gusta tried the experiment repeatedly before it proved successful, but she now has a fine manu? facturing interest that is a source of wealth to tho city. So it is with Atlanta, Selma, and hundreds cf other cities, and so it should be with Charles? ton, if her people would only imitate tho examples before them. Dr. MCCLXNTOCK, the agent of the Mendonhall Loom, designs offering the right to South Caro? lina; but if no interest is taken in the subject here, be will doubtless find men in the old North State who can see where money is to be made, and who will gladly purchase the patent right. A ?ord to the wise is sufficient, and Charleetonians should not keep their eyes closed to their future advancement. THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION for the State of South Carolina meets to-day in Columbia. We learn that a large number of delegates are expect? ed from every part of the State. RELEASE FBOM CASTLE PLNCKNEY.-Mr. KEN? NEDY, tho lato Jailor, has been released from Castle Pinckney, whero he had been confined by the military authorities, in consequence of tho charges made by the parties concerned in the jail robbery. He is now an inmate of the jail, but we understand application will bc made before Judge MOSES for a writ of habeas corpus. -o BE YE CLOTHED.-This is the advice of our friends, GEO. LITTXE SS CO., whose establishment, at No. 213 King stree t, offers inducements that few can resiBt. Not content with placing the price of their goods within tho reach of all, they have low? ered the tariff to such an extent that it is equiva? lent to giving them away. Their stock ia perfect, and contains every article necessary to tho welfare of man, and by a LITTLE manipulating, they will really become what they claim, the lords of crea? tion. Messrs. GEO. LJTTLE & Co. are old and popu? lar clothiers, and when ?bey offer bargains, there need be no fear that the gooda will not be what they ase recommended. DUM VIYTMUS BIBAMUB.-If we were not a firm believer in familiar spirits, wo should have be? come an instant convert yesterday; for our sanc? tum was invaded, our.desk appropriated, and an odor of-sky spread around that immediately caused us to think of ethereal subjects. These visitants from the spirit land were of tho highest I rank, and were clad ia gorgeous array. Ihey were soon released from durance vile; and though we Baw them first through a glass darkly, it was soon face to face. On questioning the [ebon Ganymede we were informed that our neighbors.- Messrs. MCKAY & CAMPBELL, NO. 136 Meeting street, were engaged in performing the obsequies in a case affected by Order No.- 32, and would to-day dispose at auction or private sale the finest lot of spirits ever produced in this market. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and we are fully prepared to substantiate Ganymede's statement, for we have seldom tasted a better selection of every bibulant that could tempt the thirsty or cheer the weary. Messrs. MCKAY & CAMPBELL will to-day offer to the public bargains that should not be neglected. We have endeavored to do justice to the samples be? fore us, and would advino an early visit to thia abode of spirits. MAYOE'J COURT, July 23.-A colored drayman who imagined his vehicle a war chariot, and drove I fast and furiously, knocked down a small child in I Church street, near Cumberland, breaking her leg. Ho was fined $5 for violating the city ordi? nance, and will be prosecute 2 by the parents of | the child. A notorious reprobate, Susan Hudson, whose name is seldom absent from the docket, waa picked up in her usual collapsed state, and brought to her ark of refuge. ? AU measures having failed to induce Susan to live a sober life, and even Order No. 32 proving to be of no avail, she was dis [ charged as incurable. An Elliott street nymph who waa quarelsome in her cups, imbibed a few pints of strychnine whiskey, and raised such a tempest in that quiet I neighborhood that she waa immediately carted off, I but her pleading tears could not pro vont her from receiving the fine of $3. Ono of the bo-hoys went into a fancy m ill on tho battery, but was surprised to find his play declared foul, and that he was condemned to forfeit a Y in consequence. A colored disciple of Fagan made a raid upon i grocery Btoro, and captured the till and contents, but waa pursued and caught, and ia now fully aware that tho way of the transgressor is hard. The junk shop keeper who purchased the lead from the Grace Church thoives, waa caught and fined $20, and will be prosecuted by the Vestry of of the church for bia sacrilegious conduct. BRYAN presiding.-The case of the United States vs. 17 barrels of distilled spirits, dc, found in the store of W. H. KIDD. Information for forfeiture for violation of the internal revenue laws was con? tinued. Able arguments were delivered by the counsel for the defenoe, and by the District At? torney. Hie Honor, Judge BRIAN, delivered an elaborate charge to the Jury quoting the legal au? thorities, and showing in what waa the nature of the offence, and what laws were violated. The Jury after a short absence returned a verdict of guilty. On motion of the District Attorney the goods seized were declared forfeited, and orderod to be sold by the United States Marshal, the proceeds to ba paid over to the registry of thc court. We understand that an appli ration will be made thia morning for a new trial, ami. in event of fail? ure, an appeal will bo taken on the grounds that the tax receipts for the whiskey was ruled ont as evidence which deprived the defendant of tho power toahow that ho had conformed to the In? ternal Revenue Law. THE MABON lt HAMLIN CABINET OBOAN, after many improvements and modifications, has now roached that degree of perfection iu construction, and that moderateness of cost that bring it within the reach of many who couldssot afford the expense of a good piano. SELBY, Proprietor, February 25 Columbia, 8. C. Verdict of the Faculty. STIMULANTS INDISPENSABLE AS MEDI. CINES. The most distinguished physicians in the United States have recently been placed on~"tho witness stand, and have, with one voice, declared that pure stimulants are valuable medicinal agents. This decision of thc faculty refers especially to medicated stimulants, of which the purest and the best at present known ls HOSTETTER'S 8TOMACH BITTERS. Its basis is the alcoholic prin? ciple of the finest rye grown in the United States, and its herbal ingredients comprise the extracts of a large num? ber of plants, barks and roots produced in various parts of the world, and aU noted in the countries to which they are indigenous for their powerful sanativo proper? ties. As an invigorant and tonic, tho value of the Bit? ters can scarcely be overrated. Hence Its extraordinary effect in fever and aguo and intermittents and remit? tents of everj' type. Its anti-bilious properties are mar? vellous. Persons of bilious habit, by taking a small quantity once or twice a day, may completely chango their constitutional tendency to liver disease, and escape all the unpleasant consequences which arise either from the undue sensitiveness or the unnatural torpidity of tho biliary organ. Chronic constipation is eradicated thoroughly and in a very short space of timo by small doses of thia wholesome regular, taken night and morning ; and for all the disorders which are superin? duced by exhalations from decomposing vegetable and animal matter in the streets of cities, or the miasma of swampy districts; it is, when taken as a protective and preventive medicine, the most reliable of all safeguards. INGERSOLL'S lill POM COTTON PRESS. For Con n i on ce, Economy and Cheapness, the greatest Labor Saving Machine that can be pnt on a Plantation. OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE t ALLENDALE, BAUN WELL DISTRICT, S. C., 1 March 1, 1867. ) Messrs. Little <? Marshall : GENTLEMEN : I used, during the past season, ono of "Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presses," purchased of you last September. I have always been piojndiccd in favor of tho "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in? duced mo to try any other. I tako pleasure, however, lu addiug my testimony in favor of its ontirc adaptation to tho wants ot a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my most sanguine expectations. I havo packed with but two hands, yot I prefer four-two at each lever. My bales all weighed over 600 lbs. The first lot I sent to market averaged 5C2 1 ,s. My impression is that SOO lbs. is about thc capacity of Um Press, and a greater number of pounds subject tho foilow-block to too much risk, un? less tho sides of tho cotton box was increased. It would add greatly to the value of tho Press if thc cotton box was ten inches longer. In haste, I am, vory respectfully, Four obedient servant, Ac, B. W. LAWTON. P. s. I took my Press down and carried it some four miles to pack tho crop of a neighbor, who failed to havo a "Screw" built; ho was so much pleased that ho has determined to abandon the "Screw" and purchaso "In? gersoll's Press." B. W. L. OFFICE OF KINO'S MOUNTAIN RAILROAD COUPANT, \ YOBJLVTLLE, S. C., April IS, 1867. ) GENTLEMEN : I havo just received your letter ot Feb? ruary 11th-upon my return to this place, aitcr an ab? sence of two months-ind this reply may bo too late for your "Descriptivo Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press." The Press I used in packing my cotton last year worked admirably, packing, with ease from 600 to 626 lbs. With good activo hands to work it, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty bales might readily be packed in a day. This Pr -ss combines tho advantages of lightness, and consequent portability and simplicity (being easily man? aged bj any ono of ordinary intelligence). Great com? pressing force, with little motivo power, and "last, but not least," it is worked entirely by hand, thus saving for the farm horses the hard labor, imposed upon them by tho uso of tho ordinary "Screw." Respectfully, Ac, yours, E. M. LAW. To LITTLE A MARSHALL, Charleston, S. C. For DESCRIPTIVE CIRCULAR and PRICE LIST ad dross LITTLE & MARSHALL, Agents for the Ingersoll Cotton Press.
