IOW HB TOOK IT-CONVERSATION WITH COSl
N \ MILK ROE.
Thc Herald's Ilnvnna lcllcr of tho loth soys;
As before said, on thc afternoon of the 7th of I
Tune, thc commander of tho United States '
itcomship Tncony, Commander F. A. Hoc, fnc
lompanicd by Commander Murray Aynsly),
lome suddenly alongside thc steamboat Vir?
;inin, in n man-of-war hoot of Ihc .loton, with
hirlceu sailors, and asked for Gen. Sania I
Ynnn, who fil introduced lo Commander Roe N
jy thc purser, who neted as interpreter, as ho | 1
vus thc only ono of thc Virginia's crew who
;ould spenk Spanish. More or less, the follow
ug conversation, through Mr. Austin, fol -
owed :
Com. Roe (lo Purser.)-Is this General
Santa Anim'.'
Purser-Yes, sir.
Com. Roe - P?cese tell General Santa Anna
[ nm Commander Hoe of thc Tncony.
Which WHS done. Thc General acknowledged
.he introduction.
Com. Roc (to Purser)-Plr/asc toll General 11
Junta Anna, that I invito him to coate immcdi
itcly on board thc Tncony. : | t
Ou being told this, thc goneral wished lo
enow why this was done. Tho commander ex
iiIctlly told thc pu: j. r lo inform tho general 11
hat ho had no rea -tj to give, and did notin
cud to give nny, and furthermore ho wished
he general to know that if ho did not come
vii h him willingly ' he would bc obliged to
akc him by force, at tho samo limo showing
lim thc sailors, who in tho mean time wore on
leek, ready lo obey their superior, Com. Ayns
y, who was d'accord evidently with Com. Roo. | t
lt would bo well to note hero that thc boni
ivhich "brought the two commanders alongside ] 1
and thc flags of England and thc United States
[railing at tho stern of tho Jason's pinnace I i
Thc general wished to know whether no was a I
prisoner of war to thc commandors of the Unit?
ed States and English gunboats, to which Cora.
Roc (for Com. Aynsly took no part in tho con
rcrsation) replied that the general might con?
sider himself what he pleased, that he intend?
ed to lako him on boord tho Tncony, and that
go ho must. Tho general BtiH objected, when
.'nm. Roo looked toward the Bailors, who im?
mediately advanced towards tho general. The
general did not move, when ho was taken by
Ihc arm hy Com. Roe, who helped him lo risc.
(Thc general, it must bo remembered, is a
urippie, having lost a leg in fighting against
thc French under tho Prince do Joinvillc.)
Thc general Anally went into tho Jason's boat,
accompanied by his valet and followed hy his
interpreter. The commander of the Tncony
then asked (he captain of (ho Virginia at what
timo he intended to go to sea. Thc captain
answered on the Bili, at 10 A.M. The com?
mander then told tho captain to come down to
Sacrificios (distant from Vera Cruz five milos,
and the customary anchorage of foreign ves?
sels of war) and (hero receive thc general on
board and take him to a foreign port. The
captain of cou rsc could not prolest against
the action of tho commander of the United
States steamship Tncony, although he was sur?
prised at it. Ho could say nothing, however,
aa Commander Roo w an (ho representativo of |
thc United Stales in foreign waters.
On (ho 6th of Juno,-at 1U A. M., (ho captain
raised nnohor and went to Sacrificios, where
he received tho general on board from thu
hands of Master McGowan (sailing master, I
believe, of the Tncony), who received ordere
from Commander Roo lo bring tho general on
boord. At about 12 M. tho Virginia proceeded
to s ia. Herewith I cncloso a transcript of the
conversation between (ho general and Com?
mander Roo on board the snip, together with
Bomo other particulars. This I have from tho I
interpreter of the general, who took notes of |
the conversation :
Commander Roo-General, here you have
my room; you will bo well lhere, and you can
call for nil you wish.
Tho General-Thanks, commander. Bul be?
fore all, I wish to know why did you taite me
with such violence from my residence on board
(ho steamship Virginia., and prevent me from
going ashore, a* I intended (o do, without our
being nt war (aa Mexicans anti Americans)?
Why did you make a prisoner of mo?
Com. Roc-No, general, you aro not
prisoner. I havo wished to avoid tho shed?
ding of blood in Vera Crux, when enough bas
boon shed now in the country.
General Santa A ii nay- But with what right |
hove you thus aclcd toward my person, since I
am a Mexican who came (o my country after a
long nbscuco, to serve it as I have always done,
and now, especially, aa a mediator for the re?
establishment of peace.
Com. Roe-It han been said in the olly that
you were sent by the Government of the Unit?
ed States, according to a conversation between |
tho consul of the United States and Commander !
Roc, in presence of tho British consul, and. I
havo thought lt well to have it made known to
tho contrary, ai I am in communication and
have an understanding with General Bona
vides.
General Santa-Anna-I have not used tho I
words in tho sc uso that I have been Bent by
the United Staten, nineo tho Government of
Washington cannot employ me, and I oould not
submit lo be sent by a Government which ia
i not roy own.1 I had had new* that the ' United
Sillies consul was making cD'orls to prevent my
landing on shore, mid it accnicil well to mo lo
quiet lihn mid inclino him, ir possible, toward
(hu neutrality which he ought to observo.
(lom. Hoc-Wall, but your presence hus pre?
vented thc surrender of (ho eily of Vern Crux
to General Hcnavidcs, who accepted il, thc
Gcncrnl Uenavides bciug in nccord with the
imperial commissary. Mr. Hiirontl.
General Simla Anna-What have you to do
with tho eily hoing commanded by this or thal
Mexican olliccr T As you have mil liing what?
ever to do with what concerns Mexicans alon?,
I vory milch doubt (hal your tlovorninenl will
approve of your condini, and still less the
attack you have mado against my person, be?
cause ns long ns you force mc lo remain on
this vessel (tho Tacony) I consider myself as
your prisoner.
Com. Hoe-I havo done as seemed best to
me. (This rather excitedly on thc part of j
Com. lloc.) I hare no more explanations lo ,
givo you. (Whereupon Com. Hoe g it up from
his chair.)
General Santa Anna-Well, you use force,
and ns I havo no rilled guns you have mo nt
your mercy.
Com. Hoc-General, I hope you will pass a
good night. Voil have my own bcd to sleep
on. This is my scrvnnl; nsk for what you
want. (And he made n polite bow.)
Tho next day. nt about 10 A. M., thc gcnoral
was informed Ihul thc Virginia had arrived at
Sacrificios to lake him away, bul he was
warned by thc commomlcr thal he could not
rei urn to Vern Cruz, wlici-e he was expected,
bul thal he could go to Havana or the United
Slates, an the ?hip we? going lhere. The gen
eral continued lo protest against tho violence
which hnd been done to him, saying he would
inform Hie Government at Washington of such
an oui i nge, and that ho should ask for n proper
reparation. ?
[."u ii li cr more, (he general said he would not
dcluy having published tho details of such
scandalous nets. Ho then went on board the
