OUTRAGE.-A sailor landlord named RICH tan MURPHY, who was endeavoring to put a seaman, of the name of CHRISTY SCHULTZ on board ol a boat, so as to have him conveyed to the vessel on board of which he had shipped, used such force in throwing him into the boat as to fracture one. of his ribs, and injure bim otherwise. DEATH OF MB. WHITE.-On Saturday morning ; Hie community was pained to leam of the death j of Mr. Wxrrx, one of the proprietors of the Charleston Hotel. Mr. WHITE waa born in Bathkeale, Limerick, Ireland, but' ; esme to this country when quite young. G. MIXER with himself. During the long period of bis connection with thia popular hotel. His death is a serions loss to the oconmunity. He was about forty-five years of age, and we believe had never been married. His funeral took place at 4? P. M. yesterday at St Marya Church, and was largely attended. This is owing to the accumu? lating ejfect of tho beat while the sun is still so long above the horizon. Tn a table formed from the most careful observation it is found that the mean temperature of the air during the month appears to be about ninety degrees. The sun is in Cancer fox the greater part of the month, end enters Leo about the 23d. The great heat of | the month led to a superstition among the Ro? mans that the warmth, and the diseases and other calamities flowing from it, were in some way con? nected with the rising and setting of the star Canicula- the Little Dog. They accordingly con? ferred the name of Dog Days noon the period be? tween the 8d of July and the Ll th of August. The utter careleeanoss of the Ko man theory has boen well shown by the ordinary processes of nature, for the Canicula does not rise in coincidence with the son until the later days of August. Notwith? standing this, the "dog days" continues to be a popular phrase, and it is undoubtedly under some lingering regard for the old notion that dogs are so often ordered to be muzzled about the begin? ning of July.
