FIGHTING OX THE WHARVES.-At about seven
o'clock yesterday evening, a difficulty occurred on
Brown's wharf between RICHARD MURPHY and a
seaman named CHINTZ 'SCHULTZ, in which tho
latter was pretty severely handled, having received
two cuts in the face, and it is supposed he has also
received some internal injuries. Both parties
Were arrested and taken to the Guard House, and
from the statement of the sailor, it appeared that
Reshipped on the ship Bombay (which is to sail
to-day for Liverpool), on condition to receive
thirty dollars advance money. MURPHY tried to

ZD SUGAR SELL.-The monotonous quiet of
Hayns street is occasionally broken by the efforts
of thsdeniaens of that precinct, who manage to
cause a alight ripple of life to play over Its surface.
The drummera of this street are known far and wide
for their assiduity, and the hot weather has not
impaired their powers, as they are willing to effect
A sell at any moment. Among this noble army aro
A few who have earned an enviable notoriety, and
their mirthful countenances are always seen on the
street or in their stores watching for customers.
Notwithstanding the prevailing dullness in busi?
ness circles, a trade ia sometimes effected, but it

rally victimised. One of these operations that re"
eently transpired has found its way to the up?
country through the medium of a newspaper cor?
respondence, bat .the facts hare been erroneously j \
stated.
. It appears that a jocund neighbor, whose friends
have dubbed kim Doctor, had a superior quality ol'
?alt for sale, which needed the closest scrutiny to
distinguish it from sugar. His fertile brain instant?
ly conceived the idea of selling the crowd, and
armed with a sample, he proceeded to the Charles?
ton Hotel, where a number of persons were collect?
ed trying to keep cool and kill time. The Doctor
IsSStlsd the sample around, dilating on its superior
qualities, and especially on its oheapness, and
offered to close out the lot ata marvellously low
price. The bait took, and ono by one the crowd
wore salted and sold, until, emboldened by suc?
cess, one of the jolly jokers, who is the life cf
Hayns street, approached a knight of the quill, an i
addressing biT as Mr. JONES, of Winnsboro', offer?
ed him the sugar, commenting on its merits, &<.??
The editor was not infallible; he took the sugar and
tasted; the splattering that followed was genuino,
and, to keep down the laugh that was apparent in
the crowd, they were invited to step np to the bur
and ani?e.
"Large streams from little fountains flow," and
a letter was immediately indited, which transferred
the sell to other parties, and pl toed the editor
outside the ring. Hayne street still remembers
the joke, bat the Doctor has already received a
Boland for his Oliver. One of the sweet victims
turned the tables upon him, and the joker was
forced to sneoumb; he was sold, and has ever since
taken "sogar in his," and has never alluded to the
salty se IL The editor has returned to his inland
home, breathing threatenings and slaughter
against his tormentor, and trusting that his ver?
sion of the affair would have credence, but he
reckoned without his host. Dr. P., and bis coad?
jutor with the rosy face, have promulgated the
sell, and now point triumphantly to their accuser,
saying "Thoa art the man."

last-i. e., the Wilmington and Manchester Bail
road, which was broken, bas been mended, and we
xeceived four or five days' mails all in a lump. Mr.
Hm-a, of the Central News Depot, No. 108
Market street, has sent us late copies of tho New
York Herald, New York Ledger, New York Weekly,
and the Bonntagsblatt der N. 0. Deutschen Zeitung,
tor all of which he has our cordial thanks. Tho
present number of the New York Weekly (for July
4) commences a new story, with the following
"tremendious" title: "Wild Redburn; or, The
Poisoner's Daughter." Mr. MELCHERS requests us
to say that he has a number of extra copies of this
week's Weekly, so as to give overybody a chance to
read the sensation story.

SCULPTURE.-While on our daily rounds yester?
day, we noticed a neat bead-stone, or more pro?
perly a monument, fri Mr. W. T. WHITE'S Stone
fard, and were induced to examine it. The
irtistic constructor of the monument is deserving
}f all praise, as it was evidently shaped out of the
unhewn stone. A cross was formed in imitation
rf the native pine, and every knot and peculiarity
in the bark was faithfully delineated. The cross
ie set in a cleft rock, from which the moss and
wild flowers grow spontaneously. The workman?
ship of 'the whole monument is perfect, and re?
l?ete the1 greatest credit upon the author, Mr.
W. T. WHITE. The whole work was done in bis
. ard, ander Mr. Wnrrs's own supervision, and ie a
?cmclusive proof that Charleston mechanics are
lot devoid of tho skill of their Northern brethren,
rbis stone was engraved for a gentleman of this
:i ty. and is placed over the grave of his only child,
iie croes having a marble scroll tacked to it,
waring the inscription: "To our only child."
it is [altogether a work of great art, and will
jompare favorably with similar productions from
other cities.

BRADSTREET'S MERCANTILE AGENCY.-As we
(tated some time ago, Messrs. J. M. BRADSTREET
fc SOM of New York, bad determined to establish
n this oity s branch of their improved Mercantile
ig en cy. All the arrangements necessary have
low been completed. Mr. FONDA, s competent, and
ibo ve all a most courteous gentleman bas charge
rf the business here. He has made the tour of |
ilia State, Georgia, Florida, and portions of North
karolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, and has per?
fected as near as possible, the rating of the busi?
ness houses in these States. In a few days he
will open his office in the old Elmore Insurance
budding, Broad street, and will be ready for busi?
ness. From all we have been able to learn, and
we have taken some pains in the nutter, Messrs.
BRADSTREET'S Agency, is the most perfect and re?
liable of any in the United States, and aa an act of
?ustice to them we have been requested to publish
the following letter.
It will be remembered that Messrs. DUR k Co.
had a branch establishment here prior to the war,
md we believe they contemplate re-establishing
it. This letter, explanatory of a recent law suit
between them and the Messrs. BRADSTREET, does
not place them in a very favorable light :

Dear Sir :-In March, 1866, tho firm of Dun,
Wiman & Co., the Canada branch of R. G. Dun tc
Co., of Uris city, commenced an action against ns
in Canada, alleging that we had copied certain
portions of their Canada Volume of Commercial
Reports.
As neither of our firm had ever seen tho book we
were accused of copying, nor ever employed any
one else, either directly or indirectly to copy it,
and as the person we employed to superintend the
revision of Canada West for our book denied under
oath having made any copies from other books, we
deemed it unnecessary to take any notice of the
newspaper ropo rte so industriously circulated by
our opponents, and quietly awaited the legal in?
vestigations, confidently believing they would be
tar more damaging to them than to us.
But the evidence at the late trial forces on us
the unwilling conviction that the person who
made the revison of Canada West for Volumo 18
of our book, either had access to, and copied cer?
tain errors in Dun, Wiman & Co.'s book, or was
made the dupe of a conspiracy on the part of cer?
tain parties who furnished reports for both
Agencies.
We can only say the reports we are accused of
copying were furnished to us in manuscript aa
original, and paid for as such; and whatever our
legal liabilities may be for the acts of others dono
without our knowledge or authority, wo assure
tho mercantile community that wo never have
knowingly adopted, and never shall be willing to '
vouch for, the ratings of any other mercantile
agency than our own.
Since the commencement of tho snit our Canadian
Reports have been thoroughly revised, and we
take this occasion to invite those who desire the
best book of commercial reports, to carefully com?
pare ours with any other published before renow
?ng their subscription to either. Tho different
books will speak for themselvee.

THE STEAMER FANNIE.-The merchant marine of
Charleston have a'ways boen the pride and boast
of the city, aud have csUb?ahed a name that not
even the vicissitudes of the times could kill. The
blighting results of the war were felt in every cir?
cle, but the shipowners were the soonest to recover,
and it is o v. ing, in a great measure, to their exer?
tions that tho Charleston of the present day has
acquired her prosperity. A glanco at tho wharves
and shipping would convince tho greatest doubter
that there was no inactivity in that department,
but that every effort was turned toward tho ad?
vancement of our old city. The shipowners and
merchants of Charleston have been prominent in
their exertions to re-establish the old fines that
formerly connected tho different ports, and it is to
their labors that we are indebted for the commu?
nication that now exists. The Charleston marine
can boast of no more assiduous member than Capt.
JNO. FEROTJ80N; his record is well known, and long
before tho war he was the most popular Captain
that ever walked a deck. His exertions havo been
crowned with success, and he is now tho owner of
bevoral steamers that ply between this and neigh
boring porta, and this, combined with bis put ex?
perience, has been the cause of his being dubbed
Commodore.
Among the vessels under his command, none is
more deserving of notico than the steamer Fan?
nie. The familiarity of the name at once com?
mends it to our readers, but when we state that
ano has just emerged from the hands of the ship
carpenters and painters, we are assured that the
public will consider hor moro of a favorite than
before. The Fannie is an A No. 1 boat, and since
her rejuvenation has beoomo, indeed, a thing of
beauty. She has been recently overhauled, and
from stem to stem is now a new creature. The
efforts of tho painter have caused her to lose the
rusty appearance common to sea-going crafts, and
she now shines out in all the glory of fresh paint
and fancy fixings. It would be useless to onume
I rate the different improve nen ts, but it is suffici on t
i to say that the steamer is now hardly recognizable
I with the post, and tho transformation is thorough
and complete.
The Fannie is well known to tho public as ono
of the Savannah and Charleston line, subsequently
she ran between this port and Georgetown, but
true to her first love she has returned to the old
route, and will agaiu be the favorite packet con?
necting Georgia and South Carolina. She will be
under the command of Captain FENN PECK, who is
well known as a veteran Captain, and those who
go down to the sea in ehipB need fear no barm
while he manages the vessel, for his name is a
host in itself and will add to the popularity already
gained by the line.
Mr. HOWARD E. VINCENT is the purser of the
lannie, and all who have ever travelled on this
boat will unite in giving their testimony in his fa?
vor. Captain PECK is an old traveller, and tho?
roughly acquainted with the sea-faring Re, and,
under his management, we predict for the Fannie
the same meritorious success gained by the old
Cecile. The Fannie will make her first trip on Mon*
day, the first, and all who wish to spend a pleasant
4th will make the excursion to Savannah, and learn
what are the doings of the Georgians on a nation?
al holiday.

I. Bo it ordained by the Mayor and Aldormon in City
Council awe bled, That all.taxes payable under the Or?
dinance to raise supplies for the year 1?67, and for other
purposes, be paid on or before the 29th day of June next:
and that persons who shall make default of payment of
their taxes on that day, shah pay, tn addition to tho
amount of their taxes, ono and a half per cent per
mouth until tho 3L?t day of July, when, it not paid, an
amount of two per] cent per month upon tho amount
of taxes shall be paid; and altor the 81st day of August
three per cent per month on the amount of taxes duo
shall be paid until payment of tho wholo amount is made,
II. That all persons who neglect or fail to pay their
monthly taxes on or before the fifteenth day of each
month, shaU respectively pay on the amounts thereof,
two per cont per month from such fifteenth day, until
