Tata PaiJnTrrro GUARD CHARITABLE ASSOCIATION.
-The 28th of June has long been commemorated
in aids city ** one of the "days we celebrate," and
this ghan vance has not fallen into disuse. Before,
the war lt was a gala day, ushered in with the
. beating of drums and the display of colors, the
time when the volunteer companies turned ont in
all the pomp and glory to be obtained by an exhi?
bition of fancy uniforms. It was then a day of
enjoyment, celebrated by pic-nics and rural gath?
erings, shooting at a target and similar amuse?
ments. Prominent among- the organizations that
had this day as their anniversary was the Pal?
metto Guard, one of the most popular military
companies in the city. The 28th with them was a
day long to be remembered as the brightest in tho
year, and one to be commemorated with the dis?
play usual on such oecaaioos. The war und its
result has changed this in a great measure. Tho
Palmetto Guard fought, bieg, and suffered, and
the survivors have inaugurated a char-table asso
cition, which will celebrate its first anniversary to?
day. The little band who now constitute tho as?
sociation do not design having anything but a
social gathering; but confidently expect that many
yean will not pass before they will be able to cele?
brate the day in ye olden timo, and will make tho
26th known M the anniversary of the society.
THE 28TH OF JONE.-To-day being the anniver?
sary of the battle of Fort Sullivan, fought in 1776,
whoa General MOULTHIK, with a mere handful of
mao, waa victorious over the fleet of Sir PETES
PASEES, consisting of two fifty-gun ships, four
frigates, and a number of smaller vessels, will be
ushered in by a salute of thirteen guns, by order
of the military commandant of the post, and will
be enlivened by a display of the United 8tates flag
from the different pubhc buildings, and a fine ox
hibition of colors from vessels in port. Although
there will be no procession of patriotic sssoeiations
hies there was in the days of the "Palmetto So?
ciety," nor such stirring addresses as used to be
heard from the hps of such orators as CBAFTS,
HAJO, and others, still there are many who will
look upon this day as an anniversary which they
hate always enjoyed, and which they will celebrate
M heartily as ever, but perhaps moro modestly.
The performances of the splendid band of the
Sixth infantry will, we are sure, fill the Battery
abie evening with lovely women and delighted
children. "*

Toa HEAT.-Kow that the cool weather which
adhered to us rather too long, has disappeared,
and the heavily laden clouds have discharged
i wem narres and gone, we are now suffering under
a heat so oppressive and enervating as to cause as
much grumbling as was drawn from us by exces?
sive cold and wei, but so prone is human nature to
fault-finding that ill words do not always follow
only what may be disagreeable, but blessings aro
a? often railed ai by many who do not know how
to appreciate them. That tho terrible heat from
which we bare been suffering for tho past fow
days is not a Messing we positive assert, and wo
believe thai the inconvonionclos wo sustain under
ii gives ns full liberty to growl ai it as much as
we please, and to say that if it was not for the arti?
ficial means we have adopted for decreasing tho
temperature of our body, we would have been, by
this time, "partially eorismned." Tho rays of tho
ann come opon ns now with extra power, which, if
increased until dog-days, will heat the crust upon
which we move to such an extent as to make us all
caper about like dancing turkeys. That this
would be an undignified style of attending to busi?
ness, making visits, and of carrying out many of
ihe little courtesies thai gives life its appreoiabili
ty no one can doubt, as for this reason, if for no
other, we jhould desire thai old Sol put down his
fires, and lei his furnace cool. A rain and thunder
storm is the only remedy for such days, and until
we have this refreshing damper to such heat, we
suppose we must aubmit to it.
COLOEXD SCHOOL EXAMINATION,- The dosing
exercises of Zion School, iu Zion Church, Cal?
houn street, took place yesterday morning, at
ten o'clock. The exercises were held in the
basement of Zion Church, which has been
fitted up as a school room and leased by the
corporation. Long before tho hour appointed for
the exercises every seat was filled, and though the
majority of the audience was colored, there was a
plentiful sprinkling of white faces. This achoo 1 is
under the charge of the Freedman's Committee of
ihe Northern branch of the Old School General
Assembly of Presbyterians at Pittsburg, Pennsyl?
vania. AD of the teachers are colored. Tho Rev.
Mr. VAK HORN, a graduate of Princeton, New Jer?
sey, being the principal: He is assisted by thir?
teen teachers, * three male and ten females;
these are meetly Southerners, and have
taken a deep interest in the school. A large
stage had been arranged for the accommodation
of the pop?is, and the exercises were conducted
principally by Mr. YAN HORN, who appeared to
have both the confidence and respect of his pupils.
The school comprises 750 registered pupils, 450
giris and 300 boys, and the whole number are con?
trolled by the principal and his assistants. It
would be hardly just, under tho circumstances, to
compare this with other schools where they have
lieperate class rooms, and all the conveniences ne?
cessary to make both scholar and tutor comfort
aide.
The Zion school-room is somewhat cramped
for the number of pupils, but notwithstanding the
absence of the customary space, the arrangement
of the classes is well calculated, and proves that
the teachers have some experience in their duties.
The exercises were opened by prayer, and tho
sixth classes, composed of both boys _d girls,
were examined in their different studies. We
were present during the prior part of the exam?
ination, and were very much pleased with tho pro?
ficiency shown by the pupils. The recitation in
the different classes was very good, tho enuncia?
tion being distinct, and the delivery clear and
thorough. In geography, arithmetic and gram?
mer, the pupils showed that they wore conversant
with the subjects, and their answers were prompt
and ready; but the declamation and the singing
were by far the most popular features of tho ox?
er cutes, the latter being entered into by the whole
body of pupils, and each voice sending forth its
^volume of song.
We were presented from remaining during tho
whole of the examination, but from a cursory
glance can safely say that the school is well or?
ganised and controlled, and the principal and his
assistants have the pupils under thorough con?
trol, while the latter appear to attend to their
duties with a seal that promises well for their fu?
ture advancement. The necessarily cramped con?
dition of the school prevented the exhibition or
oalesthenics, which has always been an im?
portant part of the routine, but the appear?
ance of both the school and pupils was such
ns to at once show that tho greatest
caro was taken by tho managers. Although thi*
school is governed by a separate body, and tho
funds for its support como exclusively from tho
North, yet the Zion Church take s deep interest in
its welfare, and among the white visitors '
cognized many members of that Church,
thc examination waB concluded, the prizo i
woro awarded tho successful competitors
representatives from each class, both boj
girls, received the reward of merit. Tho ext
were closed by Binging "The Beautiful Land
tho assembly dispersad, satisfied that the A
idea was shooting in the right direction.

OPINIONS OF THE PEOPLE t
ALLENDALE, BARNWELL DISTBICT, S. C., I
March 1, 1867. j
Iltur*. Little it Marthall :
GENTLEMEN : I used, during tho past season, ono of
"Ingersoll's Portabio Cotton Presses," purchased of yon
last September. I have always been prejudiced in favor
of tho "Screw Press," aud notblug but dim necessity in?
duced mo to try any other. I take pleasure, howovor, in
adding my testimony in favor of its en tire adsptation lo
tho wants ot a cotton plantation. It has surpassed my
most sanguino expectations. I have packed with but
two hands, yet I prefer four-two at each lever. My
balen all weighed ovor COO lbs. Tho first lot T sont to
market averaged 5C2 lbs. My impression is that COO lbs.
ls about Ute capacity of tho Press, and a greater number
of pounds subject the foilow-block to too much risk, un?
less tho sidos of tho cotton box was increased. It would
add greatly to the valuo of tho Press If the cotton box
was ton inches longer. In haste, I am, very respectfully.
Your obedient Rorvanf, kc, B. W. LAWTON.
P. S. I took my Tress down aud carried lt somo four
miles to pack tho crop of a neighbor, who hilled t > have
a "Serow" built; ho W.'H HO much pleased tint he has
ilotcrmined to abando.1 tho "Screw" and purchase "In?
gersoll's Press." B. W. L.
OFFICE OF KINO'S MOUNTAIN RAILHOAD COMPANY, I
YOBKVILLE, S. C.. April 15, 1807. {
GENTLEMEN : I havo just received your lotter ol Feb?
ruary 14th-upon my return to this place, after an ab?
sence of two months-and this reply may be too late for
your''Drscriptivo Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press."
Tho Press I used lu paeking my colton lost year
worked admirably, packing, with cane from COO to 525
lbs. With good active bauds to work it, I am satisfied
that from eighteen to twouty bales might readily bo
packed in a day.
This Pr ss combines tho od van tages of lightness, and
consequent portability and simplicity (being easily man?
aged by any ono of ordinary intelligence). Uroat com?
pressing forco, with little motivo power, and "last, but
not least," it l*worked entirely by hand, thus saviug for
the farm horses tho luud labor imposed upon them by
tho uso of tbo ordinary "Screw."
Respectfully, kc, yours, & M. LAW.
