A SPTHTTUATJ VISITATION.-OWEN GLENDOWER
boasted thal he could "call spirits from th?
vasty deep," but his dealings were with uncanny
beings, and he would have found it impossible to
have produoed any spirit equal to that which ap?
peared in oar office on Tuesday night. Our visitor
waa not robed in the customary and stereo typed
night gown of ye spirit; but all extraneous matter
was dispensed with, and it was only the condensed
essence thai was presented to our enraptured
?vision. Bor a moment we .were dazzled by the
Sight, but recognising a familiar object, we re?
covered our equanimity, and, by thro tiing the
apparition, succeeded in obtaining a response to
oar exertions. There was no necessity for asking,
??b Barnies, "Be thoa a spirit of health," for we
have tasted it, and are convinced that it is the
Missal healthy and invigorating spirit that we have
Ter eaooantered. A long embrace of our visitant,
we know, would cause ns to see stars, but it did
sot require that amount of familiarity to acquaint
ti with the tact that it waa the celebrated ?star
Whiskey," which is universally known, and which
was undoubtedly the basis of the popular jong,
"Star of the Evening, beautiful Star."
A LABOR SAVJEQ INTENTION.-WO notice that
among the diff?re nt articles exhibited at the Paris
Exposition, ia a liquid compound, the invention cf j
a Poliah chemist, one drop of which is said to pro
dace the most intense intoxication. The order of I
General SXOSXES, closing the bar-room s m this oity,
goes into operation on the first, and unless some
expedient is resorted to, tho City Treasury will be a
' loser, and the dxinkisbj will be deprived of their
customary draughts. Ti is fortunate that in this
emergency the invention of the Polish chemist is
given to the world. Orders should be immediately
sent, through the cable, for several drops of the
mixture; and, by a proper management, the city
could easily secure the monopoly of the sale, an 1
thus replenish then* depleted treasury. A care?
ful dilution would render the liquid comparatively
inrjoeuous, and only that atate of beatific inebria?
tion would be produced that is so much desired
by those who ardently believe in the spirit. We
offer these remarks merely as suggestions, but feel
assured that if once introduced, the mixture will
prove a splendid success, and, in the language of |
the original JACOBS, "NO family should be with?
out it." .
COMMERCIAL APATHY.-WO haye recently seen a
letter from a prominent merchant of this city, who
is now traveling in Georgia. He says that the ag?
ricultural prospecta could hardly be better, par?
ticularly in the grain srops. Great attention has
been paid to the cultivation of wheat, and some
counties will have not only enough fora home
supply, but a large amount will remain for ex?
portation. Everything seems to have worked to?
gether for good to the planter-the skies have
been propitious, the labor bas been willingly
bestowed, and they confidently expect a result
that will repay all of their exertions. With s re
torn of the agricultural prosperity, the commerce
u' the country will also revive, and new life will
bs infused into the mercantile centres of the
different States. This is especially the case at the
present time, when tho future looks bright to the
planter, and other branches of business will feel
the results of his prosperity and the country be
pome what it was in the past.
Under these circumstances, it behooves the mer?
chants of Charleston to bestir themselves and re?
gain the trade from the neighboring States. Be?
fore the war the merchants from the Southern
States, including even Arkansas and Texas, were
accustomed to make their purchases in Charleston;
bat th is is now changed; other cities have entered
into competion with ?barloeton, and a large num?
ber of old customers have been induced to change
their markets. This is an unpalatable trot'?, but
the result is seen in the silent streets and listless
appearance of both employers and employees.
Daring the summer it was customary for the
large wholesale bouses to send out drummers, who
would not onry secure traie, but would collect
outstanding debts. This practice has apparently
been abandoned, and few of the merchants aro
now TvVjV'g any efforts to regain their former cus?
tomers. The poverty of the country, and the
meagreness of the last spring trade, may have in?
duced this inactivity, but it must be remembered
that while our hands are folded, others are at
work, and drummers from the North, and from the
neighboring cities, are scouring the country, set?
ting forth the advantages to be obtained by trading
with them, and exhibiting s imples of their goods.
Charleston was once noted for her business ac?
tivity, and her drummers were then able to obtain
the trade of the distant States.
The war has changed tins in a great measure,
bat the very name of Charleston carries a charm
with it to every Southern heart, and a little exer?
tion on the part of her merchants would soon re?
store the lost sheep to their old fold, and would
cause the commercial lame of tho city to be
brighter than before. We commend this subject
?to i the attention of our merchants, as during the
sslrBawaf there is no expectation of any business,
and tho time occupied in canvassing tho country
would prove to be not only well spent, but would
prodape a most beneficial result,
Wx ABE authorized to state that there will 1
mail to-day by the Northeastern Railroad, bu
mails and passengers leaving the city by
train to-day, will go through without deten
as the repairs upon that road, necessitated bj
recent heavy rains, will be completed to-day.
CHARLESTON BO ABD OE TRADE.-Wo have
favored with a copy of the proceedings of the
anniversary of the Charleston Board of Ti
April 2,1867, prepared by JOHN B. STEELE, 1
the Secretary of the Board. It contains
speeches of Gov. ORR, Gen. SICKLES, and otl
thivt were delivered at the anniversary dinner,
altogether forms a pleasing memorial of a plea
and highly interesting occasion. The pamp
bears the imprint of the NEWS office.
THE FOLLOWTNO ORDER will explain itself,
will, we havo no doubt, causa a very happy se
tion:

COURT or GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMM
PLEAS-CONCLUSION OF THE DUEL TRIAL.-H(
F. J. MOSES presiding.-The case of the Stato ;
the parties concerned in the late duel was i
sumed, and the argument for the defence open
by F. D. RICHARDSON, Esq. He Bummed up t
evidence; advanced and showed to the jury that
was inconsistent with the charge that the indie
ment was killed by the State witnesses, the c
fence offering none but relying on the truthful stat
men ts made by parties who were present throng
out the whole affair, and who proved that the co
duot both of the surving principal and of the ti
seconds, waa fair, honorable, and perfectly just
fiable.
Tho Attorney-General followed for the State, ai
in an able and eloquent argument set before tl
jury the different points in the case. He show?
where the parties had infringed the laws, as
what was the punishment imposed by tl
law for duelling. . Several legal authoritic
were quoted, to show that his positic
was just and proper. He kept the attention of tl
entire Court enchained during the delivery of tb
argument, and only closed after reviewing the foi
tures of the case, and showing the illegality of tb
proceeding.
W. D. PORTEE, Esq., dosed for the defence. B
embraced in his argument every point in the case
he referred to past duels, and showed what wa
the public opinion on the subject, and quoted ax
thoritios, to show what had been done when aim
lar cases had been tried. Mr. PORTER covered th
whole ground in his argument, and wont far t
convince the jury in their verdict.
Judge MOSES delivered a forcible charge to th
jury, explaining the law, and commenting on th
points advanced by the counsol for tho defence
His charge was quite lengthy, and showed tbs
his elevation to the Beuch had not caused him fe
forget the learning of the Bar.
The jury, after receiving their charge, left thei
seats, and after an absence of three-quarters o
an hour, returned with a verdict of "Not guilty.1
Some applause was made by the audience, whicl
was promptly rebuked by the Judge, and, on mo
tion of F. D. RICHARDSON, Esq., it was orderet
that the prisoners be discharged. On their releosi
from custody, they were met by numbers of theil
friends, who congratulated them on their release

THE NORTH CAROLINA MILITARY AND POLYTECH?
NIC ACADEMY.-This well-known institution, found?
ed in 1859 by Colonel C. 0. TEW, who fell at
Sharpeburg, is again in fu ll operation, and ready
for the reoeption of cadets at all times. The
buildings are new and comfortable, consisting of
handsome barracks, erected in 1859 aud '60, for the
special purposes of a military school, and are suf?
ficient to accommodate one hundred and fifty
cadets, and of mess hall, hospital, and all other
necessary buddings. The situation is about one
mile from the town of Hillsborough, within a few
hundred yards of the North Carolina Central Bail
road, and in a region unsurpassed for health. It
offers special inducements to the students from
the Southern and Southwestern States, being from
four to six hundred milos nearer to thom than the
schools of-Virginia and Maryland.
The object of the Faculty of this Academy is to
make it the great Polytechnic School of the State
of North Carolina, and one to which all, from e very
State, may resort with advantage. The course of
instruction is such as to meet with peculiar adapt?
edness the wants of the South at the present day,
and is essentially practical in its character. Thc
study of the Exact and Natural Sciences, both in
their theory and their application, and of Me?
chanics, Engineering, .Architect and Drawing, re?
ceives special attention. Chemistry and Mineral?
ogy will bo taught, not by mere recitations and
lectures, but mainly by giving to tao classes every
facility and encouragement for daily practical
manipulations and experiments in the Laboratory.
It is the aim of the system pursued, to fit the
young men of the rising generation to develop the
great nat aral and mineral wealth of the country,
and to direct their attention to its agricultural im?
provement and its immense industrial resources.
At the same time, the study of languages and
literature is diligently cultivated ; and the educa?
tion imparted at the North Carolina Military and
Polytechnic Academy, is such as to fit its gradu?
ates to pursue any career. The Academy is simi?
lar, in the system and extent of its education, to
the models presented by the Virginia Military In?
stitute and the South Carolina State Military
Schools ; and it will be its endeavor to accomplish
for the State of North Carolina, what those insti?
tutions have already done for their respective
States.
The course of instruction extends over five
years, the first of which is preparatory ; but
cadets may enter any class for which they may be
found qualified. The academic year is divided
into two hah* sessions, commencing the 1st of
February and tho 1st of July, of eaoh year. How?
ever, cadets will be admitted at any time ; and
those entering bite in tho year will be afforded the
opportunity of contmuing their studios during the
vacation (in December and January), if they de?
sire it. The preparatory course will bo modified
and extended to snit tho wants of those who are
quite yoong or little advanced,
TUE 28TH OF JUNE.-Thia has long boon con?
sidered as a hobday in this city, being tho anni
veiBary of the battle of Fort Moultrie, and has boen
or served by the different bodies that celebra to
these patriotic occasions. Judge MOBBS notified
the Bar that he would bold no Court on that day,
and, consequently, to-morrow will be a day of rest
for the legal fraternity.
THE NEW HOSE REEL.-The committee appoint?
ed by the Board of Fire Masters, consisting of the
Vice-President and three members from each com?
pany, met at Mr. WHITE'S furniture store, and es?
corted the hose reel of the C uumbia Company
through the principal streets and to the depot where
it will be shipped for its destination. The reel at?
tracted considerable attention, and tho workman?
ship and material were generally admired.
ARMY AL OF EMIGRANTS FOB THE SOUTH.-Among
the passengers yesterday by the steamship Her?
man Livingston, from New York, says the Savan?
nah News and Herald, of the 25th, were a large
number of families from Glasgow, Scotland, en
route to Columbus, Georgia, where they are to be
employed in the new cotton mills now erected.
Tho men are fine, athletic-looking mechanics, and
ore just fresh from the machine shops and cotton
factories of Great Britain. They are said to be
workmen of the highest order, and will, no doubt,
provo acceptable in their new vocations in the
manufactures of Columbus, which bids fair to be?
come one of the largest manufacturing cities in
the South.
PATENT IBON COTTON TIE.-Among the inven?
tions of the latter day, none have been equal to
the iron cotton tie, and it has now generally su?
perseded the old fashioned rope fastening. There
have been many of these iron ties invented, but
few have attained the perfection of the BEARD'S
patent. This has the advantage of being in one
piece, and can be secured in an instant. The sim?
plicity and the durability of this tie should at once
recommend it to planters, and those that have used
it are unanimous in their commendation. As the
arrangement of this tie requires but li t t ie time, it
should render it more popular than others that
have been presented te the public. Messrs. G. W.
WILLIAMS ?CO., No 1 Hayne street, are the agents
for this tie, and will sell it at reasonable terms,
either by wholesale, or in lots to suit purchasers.
PURE VIRGINIA LEAF TOBACCO.-Since the days
of Sir WALTER RALEIGH, the tobacco plant bas
grown in public favor, until it is now used by the
whole world. It is natural to Buppose that tho
tobacco now offered to the public is more or less
adulterated, and it is difficult to procure the
genuine article. We are glad to state that this
difficulty has at length been removed, and an
assortment is offered for sale which is pure and
unadulterated. Mr. E. JOHN WHITE, No. 2 George
street, has for Bale some choice lots of tobacco,
manufactured from the pure Virginia leaf. These
are put up in convenient-sized plugs, weighing
about three-quarters of an ounce. We advise the
lovers of the fragrant weed to call on Mr. WHITE
and secure a supply, as it is being rapidly dispos?
ed of at low market rates.
GUTTERING TEETH.-Not only does SOZODONT
impart the whiteness of the purest porcelain to
the teeth, but its polish, too. They glisten, aftor
being brushed with it, like the inner surface of au
ocean sholl, and the effect of this peerless denti?
frice is to render the enamel as hard and indes?
tructible as adamant.
