District No. 2, returned to Charleston yesterday.
He was met by his staff and escorted to the
Citadel
THANKS,-We are obliged to Mr. B. DOSOBEB, of
the News Depot near the Postoffice, for copies of
the Bloats Zeitung, New York Weekly, New York
Ttjne*- National Police Gazette, Harper's Weekly,
arid Frank Leslie's I?ustruted Paper, at the latest
dates.
Rio Arra.-The two well known pleasure yachts,
Kate and Bose, had a trial of their speed on last I
Saturday afternoon. I hey left the Battery at 8 P. j
M., and sailed to and around the Light Ship, re
turning to the city. The weather was favorable, I
and the boats being in good sailing trim, the dis
tanca (nearly fourteen miles) ?es soon passed, the
JTafc coming in the victor by five min?tes.
NEW POTATOES.-Tho Champion, which left this
port yesterday for New York, took as part of her
freight within s fraction of 3000 barrels of new
{ potatoes, ail raised within a short distance of
Charleston. This looks like reconstruction in J
earnest. We do not recollect ever to have beard
before of so large ft freight of this article being
shipped North from this city, and accept it as a I
good augury.
Tn LADIES MUTUAL Aro ASSOCIATION.- Tte
reading on Westminster Abbey, which was post?
poned on account of the inclemency cf the weather,
win be given this evening at the drawing I
room of the Carolina House in Broad Street.,
The lady who will deliver the reading, is in j
every respect qualified to render the subject'
both entertaining ?nd instructive, and we promise I
? Tish intellectual treat to all who may a t tend.
VxHXXUXLAir EmoRATiON. - CoL RUDLKE, the I
agent for this ?migration society, is now in this
ci ty, and is awaitsng the arrival of ? vessel from
New Orl?ans, whfteh touches at this city, to take
passengers. The Picayune states that the
schooner Ben W?Hs left that port on the 25th ult.
wiih- V mil o/>mrJernest. of emigrants for the
colony. The Ben W?us is the vessel daily expect-1
ed at this point, andr will receive the? emigrants
from thu SUte and Georgia. '
t BOABDLSO. -AB many persons are 'anxious to I
tyiavethe city during the annimax.months, and to
r; breathe the fresh mountain air, we take pleasure I
in referring them to the advertisement of Mrs. 8. I
O. LAVAL, of Greenville. Mrs. LAVAL has opened I
a boarding house in Greenville, and is fully pre?
pared to accommodate her charleston friends. Wo
would recommend all who desire to make a change
during the summer to visit Groen ville, and to put
np at Mrs. LAVAL'S.

' MAL?TAB? MoTSMSartB.-The Bichmond papers
enuouuoe that General BUBTON, of Fortress Mon?
roe fame, has been ordered to Charleston. The j
Examiner says: * ' *u ? v lVt
It is announced that Brevet Brigadier-General

Heavy Artillery, who has been in command of
Fortress Monroe for some tone past, received or?
ders on the 2d instant from Washington, to pro?

General Barton is ft genuino gentleman and
thorough soldier, and wi ll csxry with bim to his j

with whom he has come in contact during his so- ]
jooro in this State. - I
As IwrcnxsTiA?o DOCUMENT (to those who are I
able to read it) was handed na a faur days since by j
a gentleman. We have looked over it carefully,
?nd find it is a deed of conveyance, written on j
vellum, May 28,1631, in French, in a very neat,
regular sad uniform, though to us not very legible
"notary" hand. Our French fellow-citizens, we j
have no doubt, could read it without much diffi- j
cully. The vellum . ar parchment, though over J
two hundred years old, ls as good, as white and J
as smooth to-day, as it was on the day it was writ
ten, when BICCTLTEU ruled the destinies of Franca
and of Europe. Any one curious to Be \ or desir?
ous to t decipher this rebe of the olden time, can be
gratifie i by (ailing at our office.
MATO B'S COUBT, Juno 8.-Mrs. Lvov DEBOW, of
Elliott street, who, like some distinguished I
stranger, was carried through Broad ' street on a
vehicle, surrounded by an immense crowd, bot
wno, IQ? a successful drinkist, wak halted at the
Guard House and. there lodged, appeared before
his Honor thu morning, and admitted being I
brought in etate, for which, sh o was very thankful,
and swore she was not drank, but stupid sad

saw the bar-keeper where she drank put some
thing red in the tumbler. His Honor believing

Betty Mitchel, was ordered to be sect to the hoe- I

An Individual who was found lying drunk in the
street, but who persisted that.it was the first time,
waa let off with s fine of $5 in consequence, and
cautioned against making his appear anea again
for the first time.
U. ft. DISTICT COUBT.-Hom GEO. 8. BEY AN,
Presiding. The argument in the caso of the U. 8A
vs. SIMON M. SAMPSON, for vio'ation of the Internal
Revenue Law, was opened by A. G.. MAGRATH,
Esq., who was followed by the District Attorney.
Judge BSTAX charged the Jory, reviewing the
testimony and presenfang the nature of the of?
fence to their consideration. The arguments con?
sumed the entire morning, and it waa 5 p. m. be?
fore' the Jury retired. They remained oat until
half past 10 o'clook, and then flailing to agree were
on .motion of the District Attorney discharged.
The prisoner was remanded to jail, and a new trial
sriD take place at an early day.
WsUXSUsrains, on PENTECOST, was celebrated
yesterday throughout Chistendom, always except?
ing the ultra Protestant churches, which discoun?
tenance ecclesiastical holidays of every species.
The Christian Pentecost this year coincided ex?
actly with the Jewish Festival. In the Hasel
Street Synagogue yesterday the Rev. Dr. METES
preached au able sermon, upon the cardinal tenets
of Hebrew theology, to a large congregation.
There was service also at the synagogue last
night, and will be again this morning at the usual
hoar.
In Virginia, Monday after Whitsunday has al?
ways been a holiday, and there was not a negro
anywhere in the Old Dominion, who was not suffi?
ciently versed in the Church Calendar, to know
the exact day on which the festival comes.
In England, Whitsuntide has long been a favor?
ite summer festival, dating back, it is thought, far
beyond the Christian era, L e. there was a summer
festival in the heathen times, at about this same
time of year. The "Morns Dance" the "Myste
rkV and the "Whitsunale, " are to this day great
popular favorites in rural England.
In Germany also the festival is held in high
honor, and Pfingstmontag is & f.vorito time for
merry-making. The local customs observed in
connection with Pentecost are different in differ*
esl pirti of the country. Tire Germans carry this
fealty to their national holidays with ti em into
exile, and wherever fate or fortune may have
thrown their lot, they will this day meet and en?
joy themselves and remember Fatherland.
Oar advertising columns will show that our Ger
P?n fellow-citizens of Charleston have not been
tmmindrul of this good old national custom. The
Turners will have a pic-mc at the Schutsenplatz;
then there La to be a ball at Mount Pleasant, and
?Bother in the city.
THE CO?BT or EQUITY.-The session of lois
Court for Union District will commence to-day.
We understand that Chancellor CARROLL will pre?
side.
TAX NOTICE.-We direct the attention of all con?
cerned to the notice in another column of Mr. B.
C. MCM.UUN, Tax Collector for St. Stephens and
St James San tee. Delinquents are requested to
settle at once.
THE CALHOUN MONUMENT ASSOCIATION.-A
friend, an old inhabitant, one who was here before
the war, and at divers times con tribu tod to the
fund of the above association, asked us yesterday
what has become of this society, and what of its
funds. Unable to answer his interrogatories, we
take this method of placing him in communication
with those who may know.
MLUTABY MOVEMENTS,-Companies D and F of
tho Sixth Be friment Infantry, now stationed at the
Citadel, will leave to-morrow for the West, Four
companies w ll leave this State, and the battalion
will be commanded by General G BEEN, formerly
Commandant at Columbia. The following are the
officers of the two companies leaving this city:
Co. D, Captain MONTGOMERY BRYANT, Brevet Ma?
jor; Second Lieutenant, Gio. COATS; CO. F, First
Lieutenant, C. D. LYON; Second Lieutenant, JOHN
COBLOM; Adjutant, J. F. MCNSOM; Quartermaster,
STEPHEN BASES. Dr. GIRARD, Assistant Surgeon,
will accompany the command to their place of
destination, and then return again to tue remnant
of the Sixth in this city.
THE HAEHONEONS.-This talented troupe re?
peated their performance on Saturday night, and
though the weather was unpropitious, the ball was
well filled. The Harmoneons can truthfully say
that '"we're a band of brothers, and natives of the
soil ;" and though a prophet seldom gains either
credit or honor in his own country, they are a
brilliant exception. We have seldom seen the
Ethiopian characteristics more successfully
mimicked, while the singing and witidams are
excellent, and called for frequent encores from the
audience.
j The Charleston public has always been favora?
ble to the Minstrel' Troupes that in former days
were accustomed to visit the city, and the an?
nouncement that the "Campbells are coming" was
joyfully received by the community. Those who
remember these troupes will find that the Harmo?
neons are in no ways inferior, and the knowledge
that it is Charleston talent should alone ensure a
large attendance. There will be no performance
to-night, as the company meet only to rehearse,
but they promise a rich treat on Tuesday night,
and we advise all who think that it is "better to
grin than to growl" to attend."
Wa HAD the pleasure, oh Saturday afternoon, of
witnessing one of the finest games of base ball
played by tho Palmetto dub this season. The sky
was slightly clouded, the ground hard, from the
late rains, and the air cool enough to stimulate the
player? tai a full exertion of their abilities. Having
learned that the "Alerts" intend challenging them
to play for the championship of the State, they
have immediately put their "first nine" to practic?
ing. Eight of the niue were on the ground, and
were placed in what will probably be their regular
positions for the season. Their opponents con?
sisted of tan other members of the Club. In order
lo equalize the game as far as possible, it was re?
quired that only one of the first nine should be
put out to close their winnings, while they were
ftffoed to put out three of their opposants to ac?
complish the same purpose. In poi te of these
great odds, the score at the end. of the ninth in?
nings stood46 to 18 in favor of the first nine, lt
is unnecessary for us to particularize in regard to
the merits of this nine, where all the play was so
good, They caught fly balls, and stopped ground
balls, and our only wonder was that their oppo?
nents made any runs at alL At the bat they seem?
ed equally at home, sending balls to Tight and left
field with a swiftness that defied opposition. Some
very pretty pay was made by their opponents,
boah in the way of batting and fielding, but it was
of no avail Altogether, we were .truly gratified
with the game, ?nd are now more than ever anx?
ious to witness the contemplated match with their
rivals, the "Alerts." Judging from what wa have
seen of the latter Club, we feel certain that they
can put a very strong nine in tho field, and the
Palmettos require all the practice they can get if
they wish to retain the laurels won last season.
We hope the match game will come off as soon as
poaaibje, aa the weather gets warmer every day.
We will be there.
THE NEW TOBE AND CHARLESTON STEAMSHIP
COMPANY.-We have already mentioned the estab?
lishment of this splendid line of BI de w he el s te am -
ships, jand now that mattera have assumed a defi?
nite shape, we refer to it again, that the fr ie ada of
Charleston, particularly in'the' interior of cur sis?
ter States of Georgia and, Alabama, may be fully
apprised of our great step forward, the capital for
which is furnished in New York. The "Champion':
and "Manhattan," wo learn are to run on a weekly
line, nn til the lah business opens, when other ships
equally inviting, will be added to the trade.
The agency in Ne w X ork is in charge of .Messrs.
HENRY R. MOBO AN & Co.', No. 26 Broadway, and
the business of thia line'is done at Pier No. 8,
North River, near where Capt BEEBY and others
of the "old Une" used to figure in the past times.
In Charleston . Messrs. STREET BROTHERS & Co.,
attend to the inward freights and passengers,
while Messrs. COURTENAY & IBENHOLM, SO well
known in connection with the Baltimore Une of
steamers, have the responsible position of secu?
ring outward freights. This division of labor in
the agen.-y in Charleston is intended to expedite
business, by enabling each of these two finns to
give their entire attention to a particular Uno of
business, by which it ii hoped a full development
of each interest cnn be best secured. Thus in the
all important matter of outward freights, Messis.
Co ?BTEN AX A TBENHOLM, aa agents of, lines, both
to Baftimore and New York, will be in a position
to acquire a largo amount of information, useful to
each, while Mesera. STEHET BROTHERS ? Co., will
keep a watchful eye to having a lull share of the
inward freights.
Adgers South Wharf is the landing place here
for steamers of this lins, and is well suited to the
business. Messrs. COURTENAY & TBENHOLM, we
learn, will continue their general business at
Union Wharves, but have arranged for an office
near Alger's Wharf fJ? the accommodation of
shippers in tho Now York steamer business. We
would regret any change that would take them or
our other friends and neighbors, Messrs. G. W.
WILLIAMS & Co., and Mr. GBONING, down town ;
for during the past year our central location has
been made lively by these shipping centres, and as
a consequence, everything has had a cheerful look,
while, with jut them, our precinct would be more
quiet, but at the same time also more dull.
We learn that the Champion was entirely filled
on Saturday-the cabins with passengers, and the
hold with freights. Over 8600 packages of mer?
chandise, etc., masing up her manifest, among
which over 800 bales of cotton, which, ftvm the
huge sise of the bales, we should "guess" must
have come from Alabama.
A WORD of consolation to all who suffer from dis?
eases of the Lunge. MARSDEN'a PECTORAL BALM
has been tried in nearly a million cases, always
giving relier, and In the majority of instances ef?
fecting a cure. As each bottle is accompanied
with a guarantee, Bufferers may rest assured of the
results. For sale by all druggists.

One can hardly pick up a newspaper or turn a street
corner now-a-days that be doeB not find, staring him
the face, the announcement that Prof. so-and-so has
just discovered a medicine which is a panacea for all the
Bis that flesh ls, or may be heir to. These "wonderful
discoveries usually have an existence of a few months
then disappear from pu t lie notice. The reason of their
sudden extinguishment ls apparent. They were hum
bugs. At the outset aB medicinal preparations have an
equal chance for success, aa all are equally unknown
but the chaff ls soon winnowed from the grain by the
practical teat which an unprejudiced public applies to
all things. There are but tew preparations of medicine
which have withstood the impartial Judgment of the
people for any length of time. One of tho few which we
have now in mind, and which has been a long time fa?
miliar to nearly every household In the land, is the cele?
brated UOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. Their
almost universal sale and use, and their emphatic en
dorsement from all portions of the country, compel the
admission that thev must be a specific for the ailments
for which they are recommended. Letters before us
attest their efficacy in diseases of the throat, bowels and
liver, in that truly terrible complaint, dyspepsia, they
are regarded as a sure cure. In Pittsburgh, where these
Bitters are mmufacthred, their sile for home use is im?
mense. This ?set alone speaks Totumes In their favor.
