Rev. E. J. METHARQXE has been prevailed upon to
repeat, to-morrow morning, the sermon he deliv?

PENTECOST.-To-morrow will be the first day of j
the Jewish festival-Shebuoih, or the Feast of |

' T am an Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of

Pentecost comes on the fiftieth day after the first
day of Passover, and according to tradition, is the
anmversaxy of the giving of the law on Mount
Sinai, which renders the occasion one of solemnity
aa well as of great private and public rejoicing.
..The
synagogues and private dwellings' of Jews

in appreciation of the season. ?j i,
The Christian festival, known as WhU su ni ide in

DEATH OF CAPTAIN J. P. BANEHEAD, U. S. N.
Bear Admiral CHARLES H. BELL, commander of
the New York navy yard, under date of June 1st,
transmits to tho Navy Department the painful in?
telligence of the death of Captain JOHN P. BANK
HEAD, U. ti. Navy, uhieh occurred at Acton, mouth
of the Bed Sea, on the 27th of April last.
? Admira: BELL, in his dispatch, states that Cap?
tain BANEHEAD left the Wyoming at Yokohama,
Japan, on the 1st of March, being obliged to give
up the command of that vessel on account of ill
health. After touching at Hong Kong, China, on
the lith of March, he proceeded on his way to
Sues, and ched on board the steamer ?Trm?.i. The
intelligence of his death was brought by bia stew?
ard, who waa with him at the time, and who arriv?
ed in New York on the 31st ot May from
Southampton, England.
Captain BANEHEAD waa a native of South Caroli?
na, and a son of Gen. JAMES BANEHEAD, United
States Army. He waa born August 3, 1821, and
was consequently in his forty-sixth year at the
time of his death. He had performed twenty-one
yeal s and seven months continuons sea-service.
' Captain BANEHEAD entered the navy aa midship?
man on the 10th of August, 1838: waa warranted
passed midshipman May 20, 1814; promoted to a
mister May 8, 1850; to a lieutenant April 7,1852;
to a coiurnandar July 16, 1862: and to a captain
July 25, .866.
Puring the war he served on board the United
States steamer Susquehanna, and was at diff?rent
times in command of the United States steamers
Pembina, Florida, Otsego, and the iron-clad

THE new ship Bombay, Capt. JORDAN, is filling
np steadily, and expects to goto sea in tenor
twelve days. We commend her cabin accommoda?
tions to any quartette of friends who may wish to
go to Europe, in comfort, on most reasonable
tei ms and get clear of the crowd. The bath room
is in itself a great desideratum.
MANSION HOUSE.-This excellent House, localed
at Greenville Court House, S. C., and under the
sole management of Mr. SWANDALE, is now in
splendid order for the reception of company.
Everything connected with the House is in apple
pie order. Good, attentive servants, substantial
fare, neat, commodious rooms, with rates cheap and
in perfect accordance with the times.
Music ON THE BATTBBT_By direction of Brevet
Brig. Goo. H. B. CLTTZ, Commandant of the Post,
the Post Band will play on the Battery this even?
ing, at 6 P. M. The following is the programme :
1. March Sixth TJ. a Infantry.
2. Overture, Peria.
3. Polka, Rebecca.

5. Selections from Faust
6. Galop, Wilhemstad.
7. Selections from Martha.
8. Quickstep, Home again.
FIRE MARSHALS.-The Fire Board of the Insur?
ance Companies have received the oil cloths, coats
and other apparatus ordered some time since from
the Ncrth, and have turned tho same over to the
Detective force, empowering them to act as Fire
Marshals, and take charge of the premises at every
tire. This will tend, in a great meas uro, to sup?
press incendiary attempts, and will be of great
benefit to the owner and the Insurance Companies,
both of them being often severe Bufferers by the,
fires. It is a move thal has been long needed in
this city, and we hope its introduction will tend to
lessen the frequency of fires.
THE FIRST NEW WHEAT.-The South Carolina
Railroad brought to this city, yesterday, twenty
four sacks of new wheat, the growth of the State of
Georgia, shipped by Messrs. C. A. WILLIAMS A Co.,
of Augusta, Ga., to Messrs. STREET BROTHERS A
Co., of this city, to be forwarded to Messrs. J. W.
WALBBXDOB A Co., of New York, by the steamship ;
Champion.
The wet weather has somewhat retarded the
taking in of the crop, but steady receipts may be
looked for without delay. Some sales of crop lots
of new wheat has taken place at $2.50 per bushel,
but first crops of prime are being held at higher
figures.
THEFT or RAILROAD LEON.-Lieut. HENDRICKS of |
the Detective .'force, has just succeeded in ferret?
ing out and arresting a number of railroad thieves. I
They have for some time been carrying on a sys
UiRatic robbery of iron at the C. A 8. B. B., steal- '
ing the bar from the yard and along the road as far.
as Wilkes Pump. This iron was brought to the city ;
in small boats by colored men, and received
here by oartain junk shop keepers, who paid them
liberally for their services. This iron is worth $70 |
per ton and four bars weigh that amount. The
negroes pay is only a small per oent. of the profit.;
made by this traffic Lieut. H. deserves the j
thanks of the community for making these arrests j
and if it could lead to the suppression of junk
shops, it would be approved by the sufferers.
HARKOKS?NS. -This talented troupe of young
Charles to nians performed yesterday to a (?air audi?
ence. The inclemency of the weather deterred
many from attending, but those who were
present testified their appreciation of the witicisms
abd singing, by long and loud applause. The
troupe seem to have an inexhaustible
rt per loire, for they advertise an entire change,
of the programme every night. They will give
to-night an amusing burlesque, to which all who
love a hearty laugh should go. The funny man of
the party not only succeeds in exciting laughter,
but his jokes are not stereotyped, and evidently
come from ari original wit. On Saturday night
most persons are relieved from business engage- ?j
monta, and if they want to store their mind with
food for fumy reflection, we advise a visit to the
Harmonisons.
THE RIGHTS or THE TELEGRAPH COMP ANT.-The
action of Judge BRIAN in the Quited States Court ?
in deciding that the Telegraph' Company should
produce in Court messages that bad passed over
their wires, has excited considerable comment;
among the community, ss it is a blow at commer?
cial, social and general business relations which,
have heretofore always- been kept secret. The I
protest of MT. D. O'KEEFE WHS presented by his
counsel, and the caso argued in its different bear?
ings by both Mr. O'CONNOR and Mr. SIMONS. They j
stated that in other States the Company had never ?
been required to produce their dispatches in a
public Court, and in caeos, when it was done the
dispatches were only handed to the Judge who
I decided that the testimony must n it be ' given to
I either party.
if Judge BRYAN'S decision is to be taken as a
precedent, it will'destroy the business relations
now existing between merchants, for no one will
use the wires when they have no certainty whether
I they can be kept private br not We hope' the
j company will not consider this decision as final,
but if any future occasion should arise, will con?
test it in a Superior Court.
MAJOR'S COURT-June 7.-A sailor who had fired
a pistol from tho wharf at the river and struck it
in the bosom, was sent to the Provost Marshal to
answer for the attack.
An individual who got very drunk and took a
j gentleman's store for a resting place, was sent to
I the Guard House as being more commodious and
quiet, and this morning fined 15.
A colored youth, with the classic name of Pom
! pey Jenkins,,waa brought up for stealing railroad
! trdn, but the quantity being small, and having
been confined one day, he was discharged.
UNEW STATES COURT-Hon. GEOJUSE S. BRYAN
presiding.-The case'of the' Uni i od States vs.
.SIMON M. SIMPSON, for a violation of the internal
revenue laws, was .taken up. The discussion on
the right of the Distr ct Attorney to require the
production of telegraph messages was opened
and able speeches made by Messrs. M. P. O'CON?
NOR and T. Y. SIMONS for JifrTelegraph Company,
and D. T. COURIN, Esq., for the U. S. Judge
BRYAN decided that tho Telegraph Company wisjnot
subject to the' same reatriotione as the Postoffice
Department, andtfeai. the Government had a right
to demand the production -of messages that had
passed over the wises, especially when it was con?
sidered that they would lead to Che discovery of
fraud. If the Telegraph Company was allowed to
keep these dispatches entirely secret, the wires
might become the prey of villains, who would seek
to defraud the public by this means. It was
therefore decided that the dispatches in question
be produced in Court as evidence.
The dispatches related to transactions between
Mr. ADLER, of Wilmington, and the prisoner, and
re erred to the purchase of whiskey. The examina?
tion of the other witnesses was then resumed, and
the Court was occupied until the afternoon in
hearing the testimony. The arguments will be
delivered to-day by A. G. MAGRATH, Esq., and D.
T. CORBIN, District Attorney.
