reason to believe, however, that it is not mero

election is drawing nigh ; UnowxLow hus an
opponent, and is by no means inclined to yield
him thc field. Ho has thoreforo gono to work,
might and main, to strengthen his party, by
fair means and by foul, taking tho alump in
person,' and not for a moment hesitating to uso
tho power and influonco of bia office for tho
purposo of securing his election. Ho cannot
claim thc suffrage of thc people, because of his
virtues, his wisdom or his statesmanship ; ho
has not been a father to the people of tho State,
