MAYOB'S Co ?BT-June 6.-An individual from the won try, who got very tight by way of cele? brating his arrival in town, and went to sleep on the pavement so as to enjoy the unobstructed breeze, was fined 15, which he paid willingly, and threatened to go off immediately on the railroad. Emma Smith and Jane Lucas, two colored dam? sels, who had participated in a big row at the cor? ner of Society and Meeting streets, at the dead hour of the night, in which bricks were thrown and diabolical expressions used, were brought np, aral after- an investigation of the oase, Jane was fined ?5, and Emma H. A female, an old customer, who Just got tight enough to make her exercise her lungs, was ar? rested for whooping in tho streets at three o'clock in the morning, to the decided injury of the nerves ot the old inhabitants. COHEN to appear and plead in ac? cordance with the 8th Bole of Court. The case of the. United Sietes cs. SIMON M. SIMPSON, for the violation of the Internal Beveuue Lew, was resumed and a number of witnesses heard, bat the proceedings were interrupted by the refusal of Mr. O'KEETE, the agent of the Telo graph Company, to testify as to the messages re? ceived by bim, and which bad passed over the wires. Mr. OKEETE was represented by hia counsel, Mr. M. P. O'CONNOR. T. Y. SIMONS, who contended that the private character of the corporation pre? vented them from divulging, even to the United Stacee Government, the secret of whieh they were SflSjJe the ?recipiente. Major COBBIN, the District Attorney, opposed this opinion, and the argument of the question was finally postponed until to-2ay pt eleven A. M. Tho Court then adjourned. DEATH OE CHUT JUSTICE L?MEXTE, or GxoBOlA. I Tiie AugEBta papers come to us clad in mourning for their illustrious statesman and jurist, JOSEPH HENEY LUMPUN, who died st Athens, Georgia, on June 4th, in his sixty-fourth year. For years Judge Lut LEXIE has been the ruling spirit in Georgia, and received the highest honors in the gift of a grateful people. He was a leader in the bar, a strong supporter of religion, and an earnest advocate of the cause of education, being I connected with most of the literary institutions of | the State. His illness was short, and he was called home, leaving a wife and several children. Georgia will mourn his less, and the people ofthat State can truthfully say, "Enow ye not that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel." CAPT. TILTON, OE THE CBOTON.-We received the sad news of the loss of the steamer Croton by a collision with a schooner, from the Savannah pa? pers of yesterday. The Croton sank instantly, and, as far as can be ascertained, not a soul was saved. The Croton was owned and commanded by Capt BENJAMIN W. TILTON, who waa a native of New Bedford. The Mercury, of that place, has the fbi lowing notice : Captain Tilton was formerly master of whale ships from this port. He went out in command of one of the stone tieet, which was sunk at the en? trance of Charleston harbor, and immediately thereafter entered the Government service and continued through the war in command of a steamer. At the close of hostilities, he bec arno interested with others, in the steamer Croton, in which, it is feared, he is now lost. He was a most estimable citizen, and his loss is a sad;one, not only to his bereaved widow, hat to a large circle who know his worth. He was about fifty years of J age. A WATERFALL.-About noon yesterday the clouds commenced to gather, and the skies soon as? sumed a threatening appearance that kept the timid within shelter. At first merely a small drizzly rain fell, but the clerk wanning up to his task regulated the guage, and the torrents that came down soon drowned out the dust, and con? verted the streets into yoong rivulets, through which the dark and turbid water coursed swiftly to the drain gratings, Benighted travellers fared badly, for the fitful gleam of the isolated gas lamps served only to warn them of the dangers of im? mersion when too late to avoid a plunge. Old Boreas collected his waning energies and emerged bom his winter quarters to give a few signs of life, and the sharp whistling of the wind as rt turned the corners almo s t induced the belief that it was October, and not the brighest of the summer months. The rain, bayoud soaking few umbrellarlesB individuals, has done no harm and will problably prove of advantage to the crops, and will cool the atmosphere,which had been quite sultry for the past few days. THE HABMONTOKS_The weather necessarily proved a damper to all out-door enjoyment last night, and our talented friends of the Hanuonion Troupe were forced to postpone their entertain? ment. We were present at tho rehearsal during the morning, and can safely say that the delinea? tions were perfect, and the different characters as? sumed were well supported. The Troupe are, many cf them, musicians of no mean ability, and the performance was far superior to the generality of Ethopian miostrels. A hearty laugh is tho best antidote for the blues, and all who wish to forget the hud times and to enjoy a really pleasant evening will visit the Hibernian Hall to-night and bear the Harmonious. This Company performed for some time with great success after the evacua? tion of the city, and upon the solicitations of their friends they have been induced to repeat their en? tertainments. An Ethiopian troupe waa always popular with the Charleston public, and our friends of the Harmonious will be found equal to any that have appeared in this city, while they surpass most of them in their Binging and acting. As fun producers they have few superiors, and we predict for them a successful engagement. THE Fran An TS-A PAINTING BX A CHARLESTON ABOTT.-The great fire of December, 1861, de? stroyed the Alt Gallery of South Carolina, which was, at that time, but in its infancy. This gal? lery was then in the upper rooms of the Appren? tice's library bu?ding, and the flames spread with auch rapidity that nothing was saved. The pictures in this gallery were principally owned by private parties, and many of them were from na? tive artista. The gallery waa merely an experi? ment, and the paintings were loaned by the owners to whom the fire proved a heavy loss, as it waa impossible to replace them. A lew of these old paintings, however, have survived the war, and are owned by parties who resided beyond the track of the annies. v One of these, a ^presentation of Shylock and Jessica in a scene in tho Merchant of Venice, is now on exhibition at GBEEB'S bookstore, at the xoTier of King and Beaufain streets. It repre? sents Shylock as he is leaving his house to accept Bassanio's invitation to supper, He has charged his daughter Jessica to lock the house and uot to go near the window, for "fast bind fast find," was a good maxim. The coloring in this painting ja rion, and the figures clearly defined. Shylock is leaning on his stick and giving his in? structions td Jessica, who stands near with the keys in her hand and her eyes cast on the ground as if ashamed to show the duplicity she ia medita? ting. This painting is by a Charleston artist, Mr. 1 LAGO, who, for a long time, had his studio in this city, but since the war baa been a resident of New York. The painting is the property of a lady who wishes to dispose of it on account of the pressure of the times. It has been placed at Mr. GBEEB'S store to be raffled, and every one who has either any taste for the fine arts or who may desire to aid in the good cause of chan t y will not hesitate to take a chance and contribute his mite to the sujp? port of the widow and the orphan. [COMMUNICATION.] Thc Florence Piro Department. FLORENCE, May 30,1867. At the regular monthly meeting of the Florence Fire Company, held at their Hall on the 88th May, 1867, at Florence, 8. C., the following resolutions were unanimously adopted: Resolved, That the thanks of the Florence Com-1 nany are due, and are hereby tendered to, the Charleston Fire Department for the warmth and coidiahty of their greeting on the arrival of the firemen in their city, and tor subsequent attentions and hospitalities. Resolved, That as the reminiscences are of the most pleasant since oar organization, we will cherish tba event, inscribe its pleasing occur? rences upon our Minute Book, and strive to main? tain the good feeling now existing between ns. The Sheriffs of counties In North Carolina, and of districts in Sooth Carolina, will at once report ta the Provost Marshal General the condition of the Jails, prisons or work-houses under their charge, orin t.elr respective districts or counties, sa to capacity, con? venience and security, and the names and residences of the officers responsible for the condition and care of such Jails, prisons and work-bouses. Y. All civil officer* having charge of any lau, prison or workhouse, in this Military District, shall, on the last day of each month, make a report to the Provost Marshal General, upon blanks to be by him prescribed, and fur? nished upon application, of all persons who have been confined in such Jail, prison or workhouse, during the month, setting forth the name of the prisoner, his de? scription, residence, age, when committed, for what offence arrested, by whom arrested, by whose order arrested, whether under sentence or awaiting trial; if un? der sentence by what tribunal tried und sentenced ; if sen? tenced, for what period and the amount of fine or costs if any ; bow employed t how subsisted ; whether dis charged, transferred, escaped or deceased ; if discharged by what authority ; if transferred, to what place and by whom ordered. VL All Sheriffs, Constables, Police and other civil offi? cers and persons, whose duty it is under the laws of the provisional governments of North Carolina and South Carolina to serve writs or make arrests ore hereby re? quired to obey and execute tho lawful orders of the Pro? vost Marshal General, to tho same effect as they are required by law to obey and execute writs, warrants, or other process issued by civil magis? trates. The performance of tho duties enjolnod by this order will not be construed to relieve civil officers from the discharge of any of the duties now required of thora by the la wa of the local Provisional Governments. And any civil officer who sbaU refuse or neglect to perform promptly the duties herein required of him, cr who shall moko any false return or roport of the matters here? to prescribed, shall be dismissed from his office, and be subject to trial by Military Commission for misde? meanor. IX. Sheriffs, Constables and other officers, whose offi? cial emoluments are confined to costs and fees, shall be allowed for services performed under the orders of tho Provost Marshal General the same costs and fees, to oe paid in the same manner, as is provided by the laws of the local provisional governments for like service under those laws. X.
