DEPARTURE OF BISHOP LYNCH FOB ROME.-Du?
ring the past few weeks every steamer that left
New York for Europe has taken out a number of
Catholic clergymen, who are proceeding to Borne
to tai .-> part in the celebration of the 1 soot h Anni?
versary of St Peter, which takes place on the 29th
inst. The Right Rev. Bishop LYNCH left this city
last month for the purpose of participating in this
colouration, and we learn by the Herald, that he left
. Nsw York for Europe, on the 28th ult., in the
French mail steamer, and in company with several
distinguished prelates.
THE DXAJCA AT FLORENCE.- We have received
complimentary tickets to the dramatic representa?
tions given at Florence on the 5th and 6th inst
The ladies of the Gheraw Memorial Association
will accept our thanks for the gift, and while we
regret our inability to attend, wish them every
success in their undertaking. Florence has pat
Charleston to blusa, and if the old city does not
soon awake from her lethargy she will be outstrip?
ped by her younger and more enterprising sisters.
We understand that the ladies of Darlington have
become jealous of the rising tame of Florence, and
have determined that their beautiful village shall
not be ignored. Preparations are now being made
by the ladies to give a grand concert in that place,
the proceeds to be devoted to the repairing of the
Presbyterian Church.
A Usxrux, HINT.-As economy in small mattera
frequently makes a large saving in household ex?
penses, we publish the following information which
may be of use to careful housekeepers. Since the
discovery of the oil fields of Pennsylvania and Vir?
ginia, kerosine has gradually superseeded the use
of gas, and there are few families who depend solely
on the latter fer a light The cheapness of the
kerosine, and tbs olear light furnished by it, at
Oboe recommends it to the public; but some inven?
tive genius has recently discovered that salt is a
great improvement, and by niling a lamp half foll
of common salt, a dearer flame, and a saving of
twenty-five per cent in oil is obtained. This has
been tested by some parties who concur in the
?ta tem eat of the inventor, and use of the dalt. The
. experiment is simple, and as the material is with?
in the reach of every one, we shall soon expect to
ase a revolution in the oil business.
CHARLESTON EXPORTS.-Since the war Baltimore
has made strenuous efforts to obtain the trade
from the Southern States and to divert it from the
North. Her merchants have established business
relations with the prominent cities South, and the
steamers and sailing vessels plying between these
points usually carry full cargoes on both the out
. ward and return passages. The Baltimore Sun, in
an article on the commerce of that port, mentions
the following receipts of produce from Charles?
ton : Four hundred and ninety balee of cott in,
'Tone hundred and eighty barrels spirits of turp?n
1 tine, six barrels turpentine and two- hundred and
thirty-one barrels of rosin. Besides the above
there were received during the past month a quan?
tity of lamber staves, old iron, hides, rags, Ac.,
? which was brought by the numer?os steamers and
?tiling vessels leaving this and other Southern
porte.
A SINGULAR SUICIDE,-HUOHE? EBBS, who had
been arrested for the brutal assault and battsry
committed on the penan of Myra Thorn, a colored
ghi, nine yean of age, committed suicide in jail on
Tuesday night... His body was found in the morn?
ing by the Jailor, and Coroner WHITING at onco no?
tified of the occurrence. KERN bad been confined
in a cell in the tower, where the cells haye two
dcors, the inner being an hon grating. It appear-J
ed that the deed had been premeditated, for the
ooat and hat of the prisoner were found placed iu f
a earner? and the careful preparations made evince
a determination of parp?se rarely met with. KERN
had taken a strap from his waist and attached it to '
the bare of the inner door, about three and a half j
feet from the ground; the end of the strap was
connected with his handkerchief, which he had
previously placed around his neck. The prisoner
' must thun have thrown himself forward and have
endured ali the horrors ol a death resulting from
strangulation. When found, the body was resting
partly on the floor, the head being only one and a
half feet from the floor of the coll. KEEN was a
discharged United States soldier, and had shown
no signs of insanity. The Jury returned a verdict
that HUGHEY KERN came to bis death by suicide, by
hanging tvT??lf with a leather strap and a hand?
kerchief, fastened to t he inner door of his cell, in
Charleston Jed.
TUCKER'S HOSPITAL.-LU accordance with the
instructions from Dr. M. K. HOGAN, Chiel Medical
officer of the Freedmen's Bureau m this State, the
city authorities have determined to make a change
'in their Hospital arrangements, and the Mazy ck -
street Hospital has been retained for the colored
patients, while TUCKER'S house at the extreme
northeastern point of the city, was selected for
the ase of the whites. This choice was not made
without a due consideration of the advantages to
be gained by the move. Tho situation of TUCK?
ER'S house renders it admirably adapted for the
purposes intended, as it is completely isolated ; on
the north and east fronts, there is a large expanse
? of marsh, across which the cool breeze from the
sea ia constantly blowing. Patients suffering from
any contagious disease would stand a better
chance cf regaining their health in this Hospital
and there would be far less danger of infection.
The house is of brick, three and a half stories
high, and contains fourteen rooms. It wdl be
divided into different wards, the first floor being
intended for sailors, the second for male civilians,
and,tho third for females. Mr. J. E. TOBLEY has
been appointed the Steward, Dr. F. PKYRK POBCREB
the physician in charge, and Dr. T. GRANGE
SIMONS the house physician and apothecary.
These gentlemen have a large experience- in hos?
pital mattere, having been connected with the City
Hospital in Mazy ck street.
During the war i UCKER'S House was used as a
Confederate Hospital, under the charge ot Dr. Wu.
HUGER, and was then known as the Soldier's Be?
lief. Since the evacuation the premises have been
unoccupied and have suffered from neglect und
disuse, but the attention bestowed on it by the
city will soon restore its former appearance. A
large lot is attached to the building, which could
be easily converted into a vegetable garden and
the patients supplied with these articles of food
without extra expense. Mr. J. A. NEWTON, the
contractor, is now engaged; in making the neces?
sary repairs, which will render TUCKER'S Hospital
one of the most useful of the city charities. A fine
a. office will be fitted np ; for the Steward, and tun
dispensary will be supplied with everything need?
ful to pat disease at denap.ee. The basement will
be used as storeroom/, ind the whole premises
arranged for the comfort and convenience of tho
inmates. j
The change mada im.the City Hospital which
led to the employment of additional room was done
at the suggestion of ?the United States Medical
Director, who consider od the building in Mazy ck
street inadequate to facconimodate more than 100
patients. Under the /agreement between the Bu- 1
reaa and the city apriorities the former were to
furnish Hospital s mes, rations, bedding and
medicine if the cityKvould obtain the requisite
aggommodations. Til regulations of the United
States Medical authorities allow luOO cubic feet of
air to each patient, anjees m extremo cases, when
this amount kt increased to 1500 feet By this
measurement the number of patients in tho
Mazy ck Hospital was considerably lessened, and
it became necessary to ?)hd some building suitable
for a Hospit 1. TUCKER'S house was chosen, both
for its location and because a saving of several
.-: - '{joadred-dollars was effected. It is expected that
the repairs will be completed during this week,
and the steward and houue physician have already
A commenced moving th? ir stores, but the Hospital
w?i ?ot be formally opeVied for some days. j
itv has "been remarkably
1 exempt from the attendance of these h gb t-finger?
ed gentry, bot a few belonging to the van jruard
have made their appearance. ? well-know mer?
ci mt of this city was jostled against yesterday
morning and relieved of bis gold' watch and chain.
The loss was not known until he felt for bis [time
piece and found it niissing. A reward of 115 is
offered for its recovery.
HARMONEONS.-Thia is the name of a musical
association composed entirely of young Charlesto
nians. They are all of them able musicians, and
have appeared before the footlights in former
days. A concert has always drawn a good audi?
ence in Charleston, and we predict for the H anno?
n?ons ono of the best houses seen this season.
They rehearse this morning at eleven o'clock, and
will perform in the evening at the Hibernian Hall.
DISTRIBUTION OB SEEDS.-The Agricultural
Bureau at Washington have sent to Mr. "WILLIAM
TILA YES, of this city, a bag of garden seeds. These
have been placed by Mr. THAYER at the store of
Mr. S. G. COURTENAY, No. 9 Broad street, where
they will be gratuitously distributed to all per?
sona applying for the same. These seeds have
been selected by the department for distribution,
and we advise all persons who may possess a plat
of land, to obtain an assortment and commence
planting operations.
CHEAP SHOES.-NOW is the time for excellent bar?
gains in the shoe line. It will be seen by to-day's
advertisement that at the corner of King and
George streets Shoes of every description, from
Gent's Boots down to Brogans, are offered cheap
very cheap for cash. All wishing to purchase first
rate bargains in these hard times, when money is
scarce, had better call at on e before the oppoitu
nity is forever lost. March up quickly, as their
determination is to sell-sell-sell-for the next
thirty days cheaper than anybody else. After that
time no other bargains will be offered at the cor?
ner of King and George streets. Put a pin here
and mark it.
PBOFESSOB HOLMES' LKOTUBE.-We had the
pleasure last night of being present at a lecture
oa Entomology, given by Professor HOLMES, at
tho Charleston Colle re. The Professor hu quite
a large class of pupils, principally young ladies,
who axe attending this course of lectures. The
room used for the parp?se was io the west wing of ]
the second story, on the same floor with the
museum. A sheet had been stretched at one cor?
ner of the room, and the figures of the different
insects were thrownwipon it from the Professor's
famous Binoptric lantern. The magnifying power
of the lantern waa fully displayed, and the gigantic
forms that were represented caused many ejacula?
tions of disgust and surprise from the audience!
Few persons were enabled to recognize in the
monsters portrayed on the canvass the flea, ant,
house fly, gregarians, and other common insets.
To a student of Natural History, tue lectures of j
Professor HOLMES are invaluable aoxilhaiies, and
we were pleased to see so flattering an attendance.
MATOB'S Coe RT, June 5.-Mary Franois, a very

clothing belonging to a lady and forgot to return
rt, waa pot op in Ute same, cell whare they confined

A Tent?n, who was arrested for striking a color?
ed boy, waa discharged, as it was proved by abon?
dant evidence that he was right in doing so.
A keeper of a sailor boarding hoose, who waa re?
ported for keeping a disorderly establishment, and
who brought up about a dozen gentlemen in red
flannel shirts and sea boots to substantiate the
quietude of his premises, was discharged, as no
witness appeared against him, and he retired, fol?
lowed by the red-shirted gentlemen, apparently
well pleased with the smooth manner in whioh his

To the Ed?or of Ike Da?y News:
MR. EDITOR : Permit me, through your columns,
to correct a statement made in your issue of yes?
terday. In a report of the Coroner's investigation
of the death of Cornolia Verdier by drowning, my
name was mentioned as "a colored lawyer, and as
a. representative of the parents of the deceased." It
is my desire to correct the above statement I am
not a prac ti ti oner at law, nor was I the representa?
tive of any one connected with the case. My au?
thority for participating io the investigation came
from a different source. My object was not to
I screen the guilty, whoever he may be, bot to aid
in the suppression of crime, and the support o
justice. And in regard to Mr. BOWEN 1 will stater
that for that purpose he was requested to act in
concert with me. Were I the representative of the
parents, I could not safely, nor would not at all,
I express any opinion in regard to the matter. Your
report farther said that I expressed myself fully
s? ti tn ed of the correctness cf the verdict. I did
say, and do now reiterate, that the utmost impar?
tiality was manifested throughout the examination
of the witnesses, bot of the correctness of the ver?
dict, oone bot an impartial and sworn jory, after
having cleared the ease of all mystery and their
miods of all doubt, can decide.
Hoping, Mr. Editor, that you will do me the jus?
