GEM. POPS PETITIONED FOB THE REMOVAL OF
THE MAXOB ABD AEDEBSTEN OF SAVANNAH.-It i?
stated editorially, in the Savannah Republican ca
the 30 th, th at a petition ' signed by upward pf five
hundred colored people has been presented to
Gen. POPE for the removal of Mayor ANDERSON and
i the Aldermen of that city. The petition a'"
that the Mayor fairs to do exact Justice to the
I colored, people ; that he -imposes heavy fines, and
penalties on them for- offences which, when com?
mitted by white people, are. glozed over without
serious panJshmsnt. ?
The Angus ta Constilulionai isl, in commenting on
this rumor, says:
From what we know of the Mayor, we feel en"
tir ely justified in saying that the facta stated by
the petitioners are untrue. We do not believe that
a more scrupulously honest and upright adminis?
trator of the laws, without distinction to class or
pe/sons, can ho found in the State.
. It seems .thai one Dr. J. W. Chit, drew up the
petition and that it contains . a clause asking, in
the event .ojt' .the removal of Mayor Anderaon.lhal
Dr. Curt ba appointed in his steed, Here wufind
''the milk in tho cocoanut.'' <;
. The Republican man does not-intimate, in. his

whether he sympathizes with it or not. This is
