BACKUJTT & Co. Information for forfeiture under the revenue laws. Verdict. We find for the United States, and that the articles mentioned in the information be forfeited. COURTENAY, in Barnwell District, South Carolina Same verdict. The court tho adjourned the Jury to Friday next at ll A. M. COURT OF COMMON PLEAS-Judge T. W. GLOVES, presiding.-In the case of GEORGE vV. EAQAN n?. PATRICK CLEARY, was called; " Messrs. SIMONTON and BARKER for plaintiff, and Tn os. Y. SEMONS for defendant. The action was brought for Slander. It appears that some time in 1865 the defendant had ? horse stolen from hito-he advertised and offered a reward fer its recovery. In April, 1866, the horse was found in the possession of J. H. DEVEREUX, Esq. When questioned concerning the animal, Mr. DEVERAUX said that he had purchased him from one G. W. EAQAN. CLEARY then inform? ed EAQAN that the horse had been stolen from his stable, and demanded it or its equivalent, which ? the plaintiff refused. An indictment was then taken out against EAQAN for larceny of th ' horse, which was gained by the plaintiff. Having found his bill of sale, which proved his right to tho pro? perty, EAQAN immediately sued CLEARS: for malicious slander, placing his damage i at $5000. The case was ably argued, and after a full and comprehensive charge from the Judge, the Jury retired and subsequently brought in a sealed ver? dict. UNTIED STATES Cru curr COURT-Hon. GEO. 8. PORTES and CONNOR for the mort? gage, it was ordered that the steamer Generai Hooker, her engines, apparel and furniture, bo sold by the United States Marshall at public auc? tion, on June 4th, ofter due advertisement ia .wo of the daily paper - of this city ; also, that out of the proceeds of said sale, the costs be first paid, then the amount reported to be due to each of the libellants and petitioners, and tho balance, if any, be paid into the registry of the Court, subject to the order of the Court without prejudice to the hen of the mortgage. CHANOX OF TOCE.-Passengers for the Land of Flowers aro requested to notice the change made by the Dictator in her days for sailing. Sho will now leave Charleston on Tuesday night, instead of Friday as heretofore. SIGNS OF LIFE.-There is no better criterion c the Ufe of a city than the appearance of its Hotels, for their condition is a sure sign of either the stagnation or activity of tho place. In a doll sea? son they ure tho first to feel its effects, and as quickly show by their crowded rooms the reaction caused by the revival of trade. Although it is vain in Charleston to expect any business during tho Summer months, yet current events, and the political issues now before the people, have caused a small ripple of life to agitate our usual summer serenity. A number of strangers from all parts of the country are now in the City, staying at the dillerent Hotels. Tho long verandah of the Char? leston has lost its desolate appearance, while the lights of the Mill's House gleam brightly over groups of men engaged in animated discussion ; and the anti-bellum era, when cotton was king and greenbacks unknown, is forcibly brought to the recollection. Unfortunately these visitors aro birds of passage, and are always on the wing, the only advantage of their presence being the t&w treasury notes they leave behind them. Post Commanders will cause to be arrested persons charged with the commission of crimes and offences when the civil authorities fall to arrest and bring such offenders to trial, and will hold the accused m custody for trial by Military Commission, Provost Court or other tribunal organized pursuant to orders from these Head, quarters. Arrests by military authority will be reported promptly. The charges preferred will be accompanied by the evidence on which they are founded. Vi.
