ter a desperate attempt was mado by tho negro
prisoners, somo throo hundred In number, to over
power tho police, and if it had not bi-on for tbo

would havo succeeded in effecting thoir escape.

success, that they used no precautions, and the

It is peculiarly unfortunate that wo should have

timo, for it was found to. be absolutely necossary
to strengthen tho defonoos of tho jail, and tbo tools

camo into tho possession of parties who well un
derstood thoir uso. To prevent those outbreaks
requires the greatest vigilaneo, and tbo few poUco
mon now on guard ore scarcely sufficient to check
the turbulent inmates, as tho loos tton of tho Jail

and eastern sides, and when once in tho yard, the
oscapo through tho friendly shelter of tho Marino

freres, who aro not yot caged, aro continually
studying how to effect their escapo. It would
sootn that by a diflsronl management the prison
ers could bo mado to fool tho strength of their
captivity, and tho danger from oaoapoa bo thus
avoided. By confining tho prisoners moro closely,
and not allowing thorn to visit tho yard, their
movomonta could be watched, their actions con
trolled, and tho community f?el oonfldent that a
confinement iti jail waa not a farce.
