POST OFFICE, J CHARLESTON, 8. C., May 6,1867. j Hereafter, until further notice, the Northeastern Mails will close at 1.15 P. M., and arriving at the Depot at 9.45 A. M. wiO be ready for delivery at ll o'clock. On Sundays the Post Office will open at 12.30 P. M. for one hour. The Mails for South Carolina Railroad will con? tinue to closo daily at 6 o'clock A. M., and for the Savannah and Charleston Railroad at 6 A. M. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. STANLEY Gr. TBOTT, P. M. THE BTBEET CABS will resume their regular trips to the Battery after 4 o'clock P. M. this day, and continue, as heretofore, tho regular schedule. REMOVAL.-Mr. W. PANNELL, tho agent of the Southern Life Insurance Company, has removed his office from over the First National Bank to No. 59 Broad street south side. This is a more con? venient and publi? location and better suited fer an office. REDUCTION OF FREIGHT ON THE SAVANNAH AND CHARLESTON RAILROAD.-Ey a notice in another column, it will be seen that the rates of passage and freight on this road will be reduced 20 per cent, below the present rates. This will be a great convanience to the community, and will increase the patronage now given to the road. COTTON CLAIMS.-ALEXANDER JOHNSTON, who is engaged in the practice of the law in Washington with Judge D. N. COOLEST, has arrived in this city, having como to take testimony in snits brought by Judge COOLEY in the.Court of Claims. As many of our citizens are interested in these cases, they had better make an early call on Mr. JOHNSTON at thc Mills House. - To THE MEMPHIS AND CHARLESTON BATLBOAD : STOCKHOLDERS.-A telegram was received here yes? terday dated at Weldon, N. C., from SAM'L TATE, Esq., President of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, to D. L. MOKAT, Esq., stating that Mr. TATE would be in Charleston this morning, and would like to see as many of tho bondholders ot the Charleston and Memphis Railroad Company as may possibly find it convenient to meet him at the People's National Bank this day at 12 o'clock. Quickstep. ? o \ THE CAMDEN RAILROAD.-Tho Camden Journal of the 23d says : ' "We have the pleas ure of an? nouncing the completion of our railroad. It is ready fen-the aire, to within a few hundred yards of the depot. The trestle bas been thoroughly re? paired, lind as they are at work on lerra firma, they will progress rapidly, and by to-morrow Dight, the work win be finished. Passengers w?l be landed at the depot on Saturday. Our citizens are under obligations to the energetic supervisor, Mr. TRUMBULL, and his able assistant, Major SIS TRUNK, ' for the rapidity with which they have poshed forward the work, and for the superior ?tylo in which it has been executed. To THE MEMBERS OF THE PALMETTO REGIMENT. The Augusta OcnisiUutkmalisl has obtained pos? session of a medal of the Palmetto Regiment, and is desirous of returning- it to the owner. It says: "We have in our possession ono of the silver medals presented by South Carolina to members pf the Palmetto Regiment for gallant conduct in Mexicoi" A merchant of tins city purchased the medal from a negro. The. name of the soldier to whom it was presented is SHADBICK BEADY. The merchant ref erred to has placed it in our hands, iu. order that wo may be instrumental in restoring fte treasure to the owner, if living ; if not, to his I THE NEW STEAMSHIP LINE.-For some weeks past the public, have had. the benefit of an active competition' between rival steamship lines, by which freights and passages have been reduced largely,' and,- we think, unnecessarily. It has been supposed that .the new line of side wheel ships will be discoutined, bat it would seem that capitalists have taken up the matter in New York and Charles? ton, and have made sn organization by electing G. W. QUIHZABD, Esq. of the "Morgan Iron Works," New York, President; W. J. MAGRATH, Esq., President of the South Carolina Railroad Comp any, and ROBT. ADOEB, Esq., of this oily, and JOHN ENQLDJ and ROBT, DTLLA, of New York, Di? rectors. , The steamships Manhattan and Champion are now on the line, and other fine vessels are to be got ready for-the fall business. The agency is said to be in the hands of Megara. COURTENAY cfc TEETTHOLM, and Messrs. STREET BROTHERS SC Co., and the ships are to have berths at ADOEB'S Wharf. ' SANITARY.-Tho health of the city was never j more satisfactory than at present, but the authori? ties hate wisely acted on the old proverb that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of ? cure," and have already commenced the use of ] disinfectants. ..Chloride of lime has been scattered around the different drain gratings, and the city has been thoroughly inspected by officers appoint? ed for this purpose. AU irregularities and neglect on the part of occupants to keep their property in ? good hygienio condition, are at once reported to the Guard House, and the delinquents compelled to fulfill this obligation. When such precautions are observed, we are justified in the belief that Yellow Jack win be kept at a safe and respectful distance, as there is no barrier more effectual than clean-i lineas and a thorough use of disinfectants. Daring the past summer, although our city was visited by many strangers to the climate, the num? ber of deaths was increased not, and the dreaded fever did not make its appearance. This ?vas alto? gether .owing to the joint action of the Board of Health and the military authorities in freely supplying the. necessary prophylactics to tho citi? zens. The advantages of these measures for the preservation of tho public health have been too often demonstrated to need comment, and if any person should, through ignorance or indolence, neglect these precautions, we trust that the strong arm of the law w?l compel their observance, and preserve the city from the horrors of pestilence. NORTH CAROLINA STATE MEDICAL SOCIETY.-This Society held its 14th annual meeting at Tarboro', on the 16th inst., and remained in session four days, The proceedings were interesting to the Medical profession, and may be applicable to the Fraternity in this city. About fifty modical gen? tlemen were in attendance from various portions of the State. Well written papers on important subjects were read by Dr. B. H. WINEOUBN, of j Chowan ; Dr. CHARLES O'HAOAN, of Pitt ; Dr. THOS. F. WOOD, of Wilmington ; Dr. E. BUREE HAYWOOD, (through the Secretary,) of Raleigh ; Dr. WILLIAM G. THOMAS, of Wilmington, and others. These manuscripts were referred to the Publishing Com? mittee of the Society and we presume some or all of them will be published thereafter with the pro? ceedings and distributed to the profession. The Society resolved to abandon, SB far as cir? cumstances will admit, the custom of indiscrimi? nate credits for professional services solong in vogue, deeming it a measure of necessity imposed upon the profession to make this change, and to establish uniform rates of charging, varied to suit the diff?rent circumstances of the various locali? ties in tho State and the ability of patients to pay. The profession were earnestly recommended to adopt these rules in relation td pecuniary acknowl? edgments, not from any illiberality or injustice to the public, but as a means of justice and protec? tion alike to themselves and the public. SAVANNAH ANS CHARLESTON RAILROAD.-Partie? interested are referred to the advertisement of the Ba vannah and Charleston Railroad Company in another column, and are reminded that the time for issuing scrip certificates in lieu of bonds sur? rendered, will expire on the 1st June proximo, when the books will be closed and holders debarred the privilege. A NEW SENSATION.-We are happy to inform our readers that Professor SABOENT, the world re? nowned magician, will give an entertainment in this city on Monday night at the Hibernian Hall. The Professor has just concluded his engage monts in Savannah, where he has been perform? ing before crowded houses. From the testimo? nials we have seen, and what we know of the Pro? fessor, we have no hesitation in pronouncing him an a No. 1 magician, and almost equal to the cele? brated Japanese Jugglers. Not having seen his various tricks, we prefer not to apeak of them, but leave it to our readors to judge. MAYOR'S COURT, May 24.-The docket this morn? ing being perfectly bare of cases, we have nothing to report, and feel satisfied that while several other cities in the country are agitated by mobs and riots, that we are enjoying perfect peace and quiet. COUBT OF COMMON PLEAS-Hon. THOMAS W. GLOVES presiding.-The only case of importance tried during the day waa Fm cn & BALL VS. R. H. It appeared from the evidence that the plain? tiff agreed to purchase some cotton from the de? fendant, and on the 11th July paid $1000 in gold, and $1000 in greenbacks, on account of sixty-nine bales purchased. Those boles amounted to 29,000 pounds, and were bought at the rate of sixteen cents per pound. The defendant did not deliver this cotton according to agreement, but shipped it to Charleston, where it was sold. But the plaintiff j hearing of the sale, attached the cotton, and sued for damages. The Jury ?returned a verdict for the plaintiff of | $5117, with interest on $2500 from the 11th July, 1865. UNITED STATES DISTRICT COUBT-Hon. GEO. S. BEVAN Presiding.-The Court resumed the consid? eration of the case of the United States vs. BESNARD MCBRIDE, for passing ' counterfeit Treasury and fractional notes. The witnesses, Nathaniel Trade woil, Henry Taylor and Theodore Gaillard, not ap? pearing, on motion of the District Attorney, the further hearin/ of the case was continued until Tuesday, 28th day of May, at ll A M., and it was ordered that bench warrants be issued to arrest said witnesses and bring them into Court. The following order was issued: The United States ts. Twelve barrels fermented liquors, and sixty half barrels fermented liquors, found in the store of PATRICK WAX?H. Informa? tion in the nature of a libel for forfeiture under the internal revenue. On motion of D. T. COBBIN, District Attorney, it was ordered that an attach? ment be issued, and also a monition, returnable on Friday, June 8, at 12 M. WE FIND in the Savannah News and Herald the following intelligence, which is not generally known in this city: The side-wheel steamer "Plato," 264 tons bar then (new measurement), is now undergoing re? pairs at Charleston, 8. Upon the arrival of the Plato at Savannah, she will moke an excursion to Oakland, on the Savan? nah River, above the city. She is expected about the middle of next month.
