knowledge of their capabilities, wo feel warranted
in saying t aat their pic-nic will be a pleasant and
agreeable entertainment.

The band have made extensive preparations for

season. Music, dancing and refreshments, will be

Broad street yesterday attracted many of our citi?
zens, curions t J hear further particulars of the ac?
cident ou Monday night under the porch of St.
Michael's. Mr. W., the gentleman whom we men?
tioned as having been hurled into the street, had
his boot and stocking torn off his right foot, with?
out seriously injuring: his foot. The boot, how?
ever, which was on exhibition yesterday at the
store, was very much injured, the upper leather
being torn from the sole, and the boot leg split all
the way up-one of the most singular freaks of
lightening we have over heard of.

rendezvous, and the'sidewalk and neighboring
door steps are occupied to the exclusion of the
citizens, while.tho neighborhood is disturbed and
disgusted with their boisterous conduct.
Before tho war . these: juvenile gatherings were
tmknown, as the.offenders'siood in .mortal dread
of the c^abooB^but they appear now to have lost
all fear, and pursue their- sports with impunity.
This change is singjilar, as the municipal arronge
jnente aro the sam ess in'tho past, arid the police
force folly capable ol' preserving order in the city,
if they are not pre vented'from a fear' of the Civil
l?ghts Bill, or any similar bugbear. Citizens of
every class, color, and condition, aro amenable to
the law, and ?heh they persist in conduct that
Senders them:- objectionable neighbors, a slight
punishment would soon convince them of the error
of their ways, and cause them to be more tractable
in future.
A continuance in crime has the effect to make
the offender more bold and daring, and if those
rude and disagreeable characters ore not punish?
ed, they will uot romain as at present in tho back
streets and in quiet neighborhoods, but will
eventually occupy tho principal thoroughfares,
said ?ill even beard tbe hon of law in lus den. IS \
ft street education is absolutely necessary for thia
rising generation, they con pursue their studies
with moro credit to- themselves and pleasure to
their enforced auditors by avoiding tho public
crossings, and. com era and repairing to tho burnt
district, where they will disturb none but the
peaceful cows, whose ears will not be shocked by
their obscenity or profanity.
EXCUBSION or THE "ELIZA HANCOX."-There is,
perhaps, no pleasure more popul ir than a soil o'er
the bright blue., waves of our beautiful harbor.
There arie so many points of interest to be visited
and so many fond recollections of the past that
?ill be recalled by renewing the associations of tho
?ar, that an excursion around the harbor is insep
ctrably connected with tho summer months. The
900I sea breezes are so invigorating and the dancing
! waves look so tempting that no can resist tho d
sire to spend a few hours in a pica eau t sail, lt hi
been customary among those who go down to s<
in ships to place their craft at the disposal of e
camon parties who may desire to revisit the f
miliar points in tho bay.
The Eliza Hancox, favorably known as a Savai
nah and Georgetown Packet, and commanded t
Captain J. E. RICHARDSON, was advertised for t
excursion trip around the harbor. Unfortunate
the threatening aspect of the skies kept a te
timid characters at home, but those who were n<
afraid of a little shower boldly made tho vent ul?
and, as if to reward their faith, the clouds wei
soon dispersed and tho evening was in ovei
respect charming, and tho trip was enjoyed by t

the Hancox. Off Morris Island a curious machin
attracted attention, and it was stated by th

monitor Keokuk.
To name the different points of interest in th
harbor, would be impossible, and we can only ad
vise those who wish to pass a pleasant afternoon
to be prepared for the next excursion party. W
understand that this will not bethe only trip o
the season, and many who were kept at home oi
account of the threatening weather, will have ai
opportunity to breathe the sea air.
MATOB'S COURT, May 21.-The owner of a psi

William Oliver, a colored man, who was arreste*
for being drunk and fighting in the street, an<
who stated in extenuation that he had fallen over
board, and had taken a little too much anti-fog
matic to keep out the cold, when a fedow lsnghec
at him, and a scuffle came on, when the other om
run off, but they took him. He was fined $5.
A man who waa taken drunk from tho side walk
but who was making superhuman efforts to ge
a softer bed in the middle of the street, was finet
only 15, as he said with great truth and cando:
that it was the first time.
Threo individ?ala who undertook to Battle i
business transaction, according to the rules of tin
prize ring, were fined $5 each.
A man who was very drunk, and found on th<
pavement in the middle of the day, unconscious o
the " busy life," by which he was surrounded, am
who attempted to excuse himself by saying tba

A white man by the name of GEOBQE SIMONS
well known in Elliot street, was brought up on th?
complaint of John Jackson, a colored pilot-boa
hand, for taking his watch from him under fala<
pretences.
lt appears that SIMONS who is a runner for t
boarding house in Elliot street, and who carriel
about with him a badge, indicating his high posi
rio ns, deceived John on Monday night last, ty
pretending that he was a "police protective," a;
be expressed it, and showing the badge, dc
m anded his watch as the property of another
Jackson gave it up with a protest, and immediate?
ly calling on Detective LETT, and stating the cir
enmstances, pointed out SIMONS aa the individual
who had committed this contemptible offence.
Ho was arrested and denied the act, but yesterday
morning admitted it, saying that he intended it at
a lark. His Honor ordered the caso turned ovei
to a magistrate.

Presiding_Several cases ou the Process Bockel
were tried and decrees granted, but no business ot
importance. The Court adjourned at an earl)
hour, and will continue the call of the Dockets
to-day.

siding.-The rights of citizenship were conferred
upon LODES Boos and A. F. CARSTENS.
Tue case of the United States ta. B. MCBRIDE.
of Columbia, for passing counterfeit fractional
currency, and which had been assign od for trial OD
this day, was taken up. Major D. T. COBBIN, the
District Attorney, for the United States, and Gon,
JAMES CONNER and M. P. O'CONNOR, Eiq., for the
defence. A number of witnesses were examinee"
whose testimony consumed the whole morning,
and the case will be continued to-day. The cur?
rency in question was 50 cent notes, and of a char?
acter that cou'd only deceive the ignorant or un?
wary. The evidence was strong on both sides, and
the argumenta will be heard with great interest.

LIQUOR DEALERS' MEETING.-A meeting of the
liquor dealers of Charleston was held at tho Ger?
man Engino House, yesterday afternoon, at four
o'clock. On motion of Mr. GARRET BYRNES, Capt
THEO. CORDES was called to the Chair, and Mr. C.
H. EBERHARDT was requested to act as Secretary.
After stating the object of tho meeting, the Chair
