A. Goos FREIGHTS. -The steamship Manhattan,
Captain WOODHULL, of the STREET line, and thc

ble cargoes and full passenger hats. In both cases

fuse freight. - It will be noticed by their clearances
that the article of vegotablea forms a prominent
item. This flattering patronage is largely owing
to the wise policy of cheap freights and low pas?
senger fare, which is drawing from all quarters.
STRUNG OF A STEAMER AT THE WHARF.-The
iron steamer Z. B. Vance, which Las Leen employ?
ed in carrying freight from this city to various
points on the San too River, and whicL was ready to
leave here with a cargo of corn, Lacon, and va?
rious supplies for the country, sunk at her wharf
on Saturday night about eight o'clock. The cause
of her sinking is not precisely ascertained, hut she
was found to be filling with water very rapidly,
?bout fifteen minutes before sLe went down, and
an effort was made to start Ler pumps, but thc
leak proved to be so bad as to cause here to fill
with water before any effectual efforts could be
made to get her steam pumps to work. She now
hes.sunk in deep water, part of her cargo and
irppor works floating about tho dock, and eomo of
tho freight, we are informed, was picked up yes?
terday in a damaged condition. A part of her
cargo was fortunately in a largo flat, and this por?
tion has been saved. The Z. B. Vance was owned,
wo learn, by Mr. J. BROWNE, and her ?iniring will
inflict a heavy loss on Lim as well as parties who
rosy have supplies on board, which were not in?
sured.
B CLEANING THE STREETS.-Charleston Las always
been considered a religions city, and the authori?
ties, remembering that "cleanliness next to godli?
ness is great grain," have determined to remove
that obnoxious element, dust, which is so great a
nuisance to the body corporate. To effect this,
thosarvicee of the efficient street brigade have
Deon secured and aimed with broom and shovel ;
they have been sent not to disperse but to collect
the enemy. The result of their raid is to Le seen
in the clean streets and tho dust-heaps near the
aide-walks ; the latter are removed as speedily .au
possible, but not unfrequently some malicious
gnat scatters a heap to the-four-points of the
compass, and the labor af the day is lost.
There is nothing more annoying than a cloud of
blinding dost whirled in every direction by the
wind, and though in some streets it has been kept
down by the use of watering carts, yet the
heat of the sun soon reconverts the mud into dust,
and the reprieve is only temporary.
The uso of the sprinkling carts is very desirable,
but when the streets are flooded with water, the
crossings are almost impassable for ladies, who
have-to pick their way daintily if they wish to save
their drosses. As only those streets ate watered
where the residents pay for the privilege, it ?B evi?
dent that the dust will ran riot in localities not
thu? favored, unless it is soon removed; but the
Street Inspector has taken the matter in hand, and
if the work is not interrupted, every street will
meet with the same attention, and the summer's
sun w?l shine upon a model city. The absence of j
dust in several of the prominent thoroughfares
proves that the charge of tho brigade has Leen
effective, and though a disagreeable necessity in
every city, when once removed, it is comparatively
au easy matter to keep it under foot in its proper
place, and prevent it from raising in clouds that
disgust every person who encounters them. j |
WHITE POINT GARDEN.-This beautiful promen?
ade was visited on Saturday afternoon by a larger
number of persons than Lave attended at any pre?
vious evening during the present season. Tho
weather was charming, and ihe sweet strains of
martie music were borne by the zephyrs to every
portion of the Battery, and eagerly listened to by
hundreds who, while enjoying the invigorating
sea Lreeze, were not unmindful of the melody that
was floating in the air. The popularity of the
Battery has been greatly increased since the intro?
duction of the etroot cars, and though the recent
changes-t?ave in ? measure' affected their custom,
yet on Saturday they were crowded to their utmost
capacity, and over two. thousand persons were ena?
bled to visit the Battery and enjoy the music, the
water and the salt air.
It waa;evident, from the:joyous faces soon
on Saturday, that it was a season of perfect enjoy?
ment; dull care had been thrown aside, and all
the vexations and troubles of Ufe were forgotten,
for with everything co please, and none to perplex,
it was not difficult to imagine tho post but a
troubled dream, only to bo remembered when
affected with the blues.
Unfortunately for the gay promenaders, the nu?
merous vehicles on the street raised terrific clouds
of dust that threatened destruction to many
gauzy bonnets, and interfered considerably with
the pleasures of the promenade, as none of thc
afflicted visitors were willing to return to their na?
tive dust at that tinto, and considered thc insinua?
tion aa excessively disagreeable. Wo learn that
this dusty visitation will bo obviated in futuro, as
arrangements have been inadu to sprL'iklo thc
streets, and suppress the nuisance, and by noxt
Saturday, if the weather clerk does not interfere,
both East and South Bay streets will be woll (or
sea) watered, as the latter clement can bo more
easily obtained.
Notwithstanding tho dust and heat, which were
only petty annoyances, many persons remained on
the Battery until tho lengthening and thu waning
shadows notified thom of tho approa h of night;
but fair Luna was in her zenith, and though day?
light had gone, few who havo over Lakeu a ramble
on th? Battery Ly moonlight would Lcsitate in
awarding it the palm. Tho mellow light, and thc
dancing, sparkling water, which appeared like a
silvery sea kissing the moon Learns, aro too well
known to need a description, and proved tc Lo

grasping the hand of an old acquaintance, Mr. E.

I sponding, but are planting largo crops of cotton,
and are anticipating a generous yield. Provisions
are planted in many sections, but the most atten?
tion is paid to the cotton crop. Mr. BRONSON has
visited Charleston ou business connected with his
paper, and is stopping at tho Pavilion Hotel.
MAYOR'S COOET, May 18.-Floronco Hercules, a
very black mau, who made lovo to some iron bo?
long ng to the railroad company, was locked up
for one week.
Ellen Lanueau, a colored woman, who was
arrested for taking thc law in her owu hand, and
beating a boy in the street, who had stolen an axe
from her, and thereby creating a disturbance of
the public peace, was made to pay $5.
The member of tho Barleycorn Artillery often
spoken of by us as a veteran drinker, was up again
for getting tight and riotous in a stable ; and as
ho exhibited no fear of being kicked out by the
horses, he was taken from tho building for beasts
by a policeman, at the request of the proprietor,
and fined S3.
Two ancient mariners were mulcted in $5 each for
fighting in the street.
COURT OP COMMON PLEAS-Hon. R. MUMBO pre?
siding-The entire day was occupied in the call of
the City Summary Process Docket. Several cases
were tried and a great many decrees given, but by
for the majority of cases were continued, on mo?
tion or by consent of counsel. One or two cases
having remained much longer on the docket than
his Honor considered necessary, were stricken off.
One in particular had been docketed for the nine?
teenth term. The cases were principally snits for
sums of $100 and less, and were of no public inter?
est. Only a portion of the docket was called, and
it will be continued to-day.
QUIET OF THE Cm.-It is somewhat remarkable
that while other Southern cities have been dis?
graced by riots and disturbances, the Palmetto
City, the head and front of the whole secession
movement, bas not only escaped this stigma, but
has been a pattern of morality, peace and quiet?
ness. This happy state is due principally to the
moderation of her rulers, both civil and military,
and also to the disposition manifested by her citi?
zens to obey the laws, and not question their
righteousness. Never since the close of the war
have we enjoyed a period of more perfect repose
than the present, at a time, too, when the Radical
emissaries are .secretly striving to form antago?
nistic parties, and to destroy the friendly feelings
now existing between the races. Important
changes have been made in corporate bodies, but
no riot has followed, they havo been accepted as
necessities, unpleasant perhaps, but to bo made
the best of and not to be opposed,
- A visit to the Mayor's Court any morning would
at once convince the most incredulous of th e true
quietness of the oity, for the cases brought up are
generally trivial offences, such as drunkenness or
pilfering, and are not confined to either class. The
police are under admirable discipline, and though
not officions in the discharge of their duties, are a
terror to all evil-doers, who know that the laws
cannot be broken with impunity, and seldom at?
tempt any rascality on a large scale. While this
state of affairs exist, we may confidently expect
quiet and peace; and there is no rea-on to look for
a chang?, as persons of both clossos feel that it is
far better to live in unity than by any turbulent
demonstrations to engeuder ill-feeling, that onco
raised, cannot be easily quelled. Charleston never
was subject to mob law, and though her situation
is now somewhat changed, her pride in the past is
sufficient to guarantee a similar future.
COTTON M KINO.-The superiority of the long
staple cotton has been so often vaunted, that tho
sea islands of South Carolina were considered tho
ore&m of the earth, and the regal authority over
vegetable kingdom willingly conceded to their
silky staple. The war, and its attendant evils, the
destruction of property and the different changes
consequent upon ita termination, staggered this
belief, as the desolate plantations were not consid?
ered capable of producing the same quality of
cotton, especially with a different system ot labor.
Fortunately the'Southern planters were not con
tout to load a life of idleness, but immediately
commonccd to repair their ruined fortunes, and
by the. aid of Northern skill and ingenuity to es?
tablish an agricultural interest which would be
superior to that destroyed. In this they have suc?
ceeded beyond the most sanguine expectations,
and though only two years have elapsed since the
dose of the war, yetthe results warrant a contin?
uance in. the belief that "Cotton is indeed King."
We have had the pleasure of examining a sample .
of Sea Island cotton grown by the Hon. JNO.
TOWNSEND, on Edisto Island. Thia cotton was
raised from seed selected from healthy stalks, and
is soft and silky in texture, and by far the best
ever brought to this market. Only three bales of J
this quality were raised, two of which were shipped
to Havre and ono sent to tho Paris Exposition. A
proof that thia cotton is far superior to the best
long staple- ever - brought to the market, is the
price tint it commands among merchants. Three
dollars per pound was offered and refused, as it
could easily bring three fifty in France, where the
rh i er grade? of cotton are extensively us cd in tho
manufacture of. different gooda.. Mr. TOWNSEND'S
cotton has long been celebrated as the finest over
brought' to Charleston, brit this, suppos?es all that
he has previously grown, and shows to what per?
fection the culture of the plant may be carried.
When the question of labor has been definitely Bet
tied, and our plantera have adopted the different
labor-saving machines and improved methods of J
agriculture, we may expect our staple to become
finer, softer, and more silky than at present, while
at the same time the price will be proportionally
improved..
