The Rev. Doctor YOUNO, of New York, bas been
elected to the Episcopal Bishopric made vacant bj

The body of Lours Fox, the missing Rochester
billiard player, who so mysteriously disappeared
in December last, was found recently floating in
the river at Charlotte, seven miles from that city.
The prospect of a plague of grasshoppers in
Kansas, of which we made mention some weeks
since, is apparently being realized. The grass?
hoppers are said to be so thick in that region that
they scoop them np by the peck. I
Three y rang men named HAUJEKSBUBO, BU
CHAVAH and LANLY, have recently met death by
drowning, in Minnesota, One of them went out
duck-shooting on Pearl Lake in a large sap
kettle.
The report of the Superintendent of the Freed?
men's Bureau for Tennesssee, for Msroh, has been
made. The number of schools in tho State is 103;
pupils 8536; teachers 148. The interest in these
schools is rapidly increasing.
An exchange says that two large pigs of lead
were brought, during the war, from the Sonth to
Rochester New York, cy Mr. Enos C. Fraley. Not
long since-Enos attempted to cut off a piece to run
into bullets, and found the metal was solid silver.
Governor .CRAWFORD, of Kansas, has ordered
Bngadier-General HARVEY to immediately com?
mence the enrollment of the militia in the West
? ern District, to be ready to act in case of any
* trouble from the Indians during the summer.
A Buffalo dispatch says the southern portion
of the bay is still blocked with ice, and that the
crews of several vessels, which were consequently
nuable to come up to the city, ore suffering se?
riously from the want of provisions. Measures
are being taken for their speedy relief.
The frost on the night of Tuesday, 7th inst, was
very heavy in Indiana and Illinois and the North
?rest, and at many points the early fruits-especi?
ally the peaches-were' entirely cut off or seriously
damaged. Li Ohio, no harm, appears to have boen
done.. : ::
Tie Sith Annivorsary of the American Anti?
slavery Society was celebrated in New York on tho
17th instant. WENDELL PHILLIPS was tho chief
speaker. Resolutions were pessed calling on Con?
gress to impeach the President without delay, and
favoring confiscation.
The Indian Bureau has just issued for tho
Senate, a long tabular statement of the approxim?
ate number of persons belonging to each tribe of
Indiana in the United States The total number is
306,465. ; The Cherokees, Apaches, Choctaws, and
Creek tribes average about 14,000 each.
Advices from the seat of war on the Plains state
that the Cheyennes, have been driven north by
General HANCOCK'S operations on the Smoky HOI
route. Numerous war parties were on tho road,
and the Pinals and Apaches had declared war in,
Arizona.
Completely successful arrangements have been
made, under the supervision of Government En?
gineers, on one of the gun-boats, establishing Ihe
advantages of the use of petroleum as; fuel under
.team boilers.. Tho apparatus used was simple
ano1 inexpensive, and no alteration of the boiler
iras required. . _

The Bichmond Whig saya that further examina?
tion of the Bright Hope Pit, the scene of the late
disastrous explosion, has shown that a fire is still
burping in . tho drift. Accordingly it was found
necessary, on Wednesday last to close the shafts
again. - The fire now, is all probability, can only
be extinguished by a riso of water or by pumping
moro water in. <1~;
A sea Captain asserts that the Mississippi river
irater will keep longer at sea than any other and
in a voyage in a packet ship from New York to
New Orleans, the passengers drank water which
was taken on board at the latter place, and had
teen carried thence to Liverpool and back to New
York, and was anita way to New Orleans again,
still more wholesome for the voyage than any that
could be procured ai New. York.
The richest man in Paris, after Baron ROTHS
CHILD, has, just died. His hame was GRXFFULKX.
He has left a clear fortune of five million pounds
sterling, to he divided among nephews and nieces.
Me was a ?bill-discounter by calling, bat in a very

pounds. For fifty years he was a martyr to neu?
ralgia, and during tl -t long period believed him?
self to be in danger, and even hoped for death.

The people of (31arksviue, Tenn., and Montgom
cry County propose to have at their beautiful Fair
Grounds, which are unsurpassed for spaciousness

The New York Tribune says: "Five negroes sit
upon the Grand Jury in Judge UNDERWOOD'S Court,
and before them the President of the Confederacy
is to repeat the words: 'I will be tried before God
and by my peers.' " Upon this the New York Oom
merctal Advertiser comments: "The Grand Jury
has bad its say already in regard to DAVIS, and he
lim? no occasion, either in law or fact to go before
them and repeat the words above placed in his
mouth: His 'peers' will be in the Petit Jury, and
Ht remains to be seen whether they are of mixed
nationality.''
Ten naval apprentices are to be selected by com?
petitive examination from the two hundred and
?nd seventy on board the Sabine at New London,
as naval cadets at Annapolis academy. This is a
better plan than the one formerly followed all
over the country, of deciding such applications by
Congressional favoritism. If wo aro not mistaken,
Gen. SICKLES first inaugurated this practico, when
a member of Congress from the city of Now York.
It was thus he made two appointments, ono for
West Point and the other for Annapolis, in 1800,
and his action found universal approval.
The inauguration of a *' new religious sect," in
Scott Tp.. Sandusky Co., 0., having occasioned
much feeling in the vicinity, a meeting was held
to consider the matter, when the apostle of the
new faith, a man named GAY, took the stand, says
the Fremont Journal, and began Binging and pray?
ing that the " angels of God would expel the an?
gels of the devil from the house." Several carnal
minded persons thereupon objected to bis pro?
ceeding, and of course a row ensued, ending in an
indictment of the "gay and festive" party for a
riot. - ' .
Our latest news from Mexico, says the New York
Times, throws discredit on the official information
which the Mexican Minister received on the 80th
of last month, that MAXIMILIAN had ingloriously j
decamped from Queretaro, and that his army was
totally destroyed. We gave reasons for doubting
the statements when they were forwarded to us.
Our advices from Tampico yesterday were to the
Ctn instant, and from San Luis Potosi to the 27th
nit., and from neither point do ne get any mention
of MAXIMILIAN'S flight. At latest accounts MAXI?
MILIAN was' still carrying on operations, rather
desperately, it is true, but still in such away as to
embarrass the Liberals badly;" Vera Cruz as well
as the capital was still under Imperial control, and
JUAREZ seems to have made no progress since the
fall of Puebla. It is natural that the Imperialists
L should continue to fight with persistent de term i
?nation when there is no prospect for them but

JOB WORK.-We have now completed our
office so as to execute, in the shortest possible
time, ALL KINDS OF JOB WORK, and we
most respectfully ask the patronage of our

THE M?BIUS RIOT.
Our telegraphic columns contain, this morn?
ing, tho account of a riot in Mobile, which re?
sulted in the death of several persons, black
and white; and although we have not jet in?
formation enough to say who were most to
blame in this lamentable transaction, wc can
say that it was the direct consequence of
the system of incendiary lectures which
has been inaugurated throughout the South.
From Richmond, from New Orleans and
from Mobile wc are hearing the same sad
story. Here, so far, we have been spared.
The good sense and the kindly feeling of all
classes have hitherto avoided the provocation
which leads to riot and bloodshed; but here
the same elements of society exist as exist else?
where throughout the South, and these occur?
rences cannot fail to disturb and disquiet us.
Whatever may be the forbearance and temper
of our whole people, if wicked men will delib?
erately set themselves to create difficulties, to
foment strife, to stimulate and intensify natu?
ral but unfortunate prejudices, the work of
mischief is easy an 1 sure.
If there are men whose object it is, for party
purposes, to prevent the peaceful and success?
ful execution of the Reconstruction Act; to
provoke between thc races an animosity which
docs not now exist, and to inflame the hearts
of an ignorant and deluded multitude with a
hate only thc more malevolent because its ob?
ject is too general to bc protected by the feel?
ing of individual kindness, they can always
fiud on thc other side men whose passions arc
too strong for prudent restraint, and who will
reply by violence to insulting taunts and calum?
nious invective. In such a strife good and
wise men arc without any power for good, and
they can have no influenco upon consequences
for which they are in no way responsible. If
til is is the future before ns, God help the coun?
try, for human wisdom is vain. To the white
man it will be a lime of trial, but to the black
man it can bring nothing but disaster-the
ruin of his fairest hopes-the destruction of all
the good which his freedom might have secured
him, and to which his own good conduct has so
far justly entitled him.
If this course is persevered in there can be
no mistake as to its motive or as to its conse?
quence. No living man on this continent can
delude himself in this matter. The men who
speed thc fiery cross on this mission of death
know that their work is evil. I ney Know tuai
not a principle of justice, nota sentiment of
humanity is served by their labor of hate, and
that it is out of the fulness of a malicious heart
that the mouth speaketh.
They know that if they succeed no language
can picture the desolation which will mark the
path of their triumph, and we appeal to the
people of the North to stop this unholy crusade.
We appeal to the courage of men who have
proved themselves soldiers, to tho wisdom of
men who claim to be statesmen, to tho human?
ity of a people who thank God they arc Chris?
tians.
We have a right to make this appeal. We
have done our duty fully. Wc have accepted
the conditions which Congress has imposed, and
putting down old prejudices and natural pas?
sions, we have, without evasion, recognised
and respcoted every right which tho law has
conferred upon the freedmen, and not only so,
but the strained and straightened capital of the
country has been freely spent to afford a field
to his labor and to retain him among us as a
useful member of our society.
'So agitation is necessary for his protection..
The military government which has been placed
in the hands of men whom the whole North
trusts, is ample to guard against any invasion
of his slightest privilege and to secure him the
full exercise, of all .his political power. The
Freedmen's Bureau =. spreads over the ? whole
country, efficiently and jealously administered
in his interest, and interfering without appeal
with the laws.of labor if they bear hardly upon
his capricious energies. Education, if it unfits
him at the present for- what he can do, is busy
in fitting him for something better which he is
to do. Everywhere he has free speech and a
free press. Public meetings and joint associa?
tions are at work teaching him what it is wise
for him to think, and say, and do, and this
mighty revolution-in thc history of his race
directed and protected by the wealth and
power of an imperial government is going on
quietly, peaceably, without fear on the part of
thc former master, without riot on thc part of
the former slave.
And this wonderful achievement, more won?
derful and more honorable to both great sec?
tions of thc American people than all the bat?
tles that were won and lost, is to bc disturbed
for what ?
From every portion of the South every mail
brings the evidence that this apparently inso?
luble problem is solving itself, that common
wants and common hopes, that industry and
capital, that justice and wisdom, kind hearts
and clear heads are teaching black and white
that they can best serve themselves by serving
each other, and ali this labor must be thrown
away, this prospect of returning peace bc shut
in darkness, to gratify thc vanity and relieve
the poverty of a few demagogues who at tho
expense of a party committee" and protected by
an army whose brave and generous officers
must loathe the duty, are striving to win a party
triumph that is not in danger or to preserve a
personal notoriety which has already sufficient?
ly offended the decency and good Bense of the
country.
If thc great leaders of the Republican party
hud thought fit to come among us and with the
gravity and temperance and authority that be?
long to their characters and position, to speak
to all classes in words of kindness upon the
questions of national interest which the present
condition of thc South presents, they might
have accomplished much good. At auy rate
they would haye been everywhere received
with courtesy and heard with respect. But
surely they understand thc difference between
such an appeal to the Southern people and thc
irritating influenco of the noisome demagogues
who are swarming over this unfortunate land.
At any rate for all this we are not responsi?
ble. And we trust further, that hard as it is
to bear, ?twill not tempt us to swerve from the
duty we have to discharge. In this State we
have been peculiarly fortunate. There has
been a cordial co-operation between the mili?
tary authorities and the people, and thc Bureau
hus exercised a judicious and wholesome in?
fluence. The relations between the white and

with very low occasional exceptions, t li cy arc un
disturbed. And if we have lind mischievous
agitators among us, their ability has certainly
not been equal to Ibeir will.
As the lime approaches for the elections, wc
must expect that there will bc dift'erenccs of
opinion nntl perhaps conflicting interests, but
wc trust that these troubles in other places will
only serve as a warning, and that wc will rind
lime aud temper lo conciliate all such differ
enees and harmonize all such interests, and
that at any rate we will have learned that it is
wiser, and safer, and better lo trust each other
than to be made tho dupes and victims of
wicked and designing men.
