It used to bo a rooognixod fact, in this coun
try, that politios was bad pay ; that men, with
out independent fortunes, who devoted thoir
lives to tho public, must bo content with re
spectable poverty, and find their compensation
in tho rcspeot and esteem of thoir follow citi
zens. Among tho great statesmen of past gen
erations, few can bo named whoso means woro
not limited, and tho accumulation of fortuno
by tho uso of political influenoo has hitherto
been always raro and always discreditable.
Kvon in tho South whero, as a gonernl rule,
our politicians havo boon aelootod from that
class in whioh hereditary wealth most abound
ed, tho combination of fortune and largo pub
lie influenoo was not common. Our statosmen,
while thoy represented forlunos vary seldom
posaosscd them.
But the progress of opinion oortainljr tho
current of practice scorns to bo changing. If
we aro to trust tho oonlinuod and uncontradiot
cd assertions of tho Northern press, men now
go into politics as thoy go into trade, with their
political position as rccogniied capital ; and,
in time, we eupposo wo will hear of members
of the Legislature, and even members of .Con
gress, Belling tho "good will" of thoir soats
in thcao new-fashioned Exohango Boards.
Ono of tho loading Now York Journals ex
pressed tho opinion tho other day, that thore
were not ten mon in tho Now York Sonate, and
not thirty in tho lower houso who voted for
any measure without a retainer.
Other papers in other States tell the samo
story, and wo see that tho London papers re
produce these accusations, and very naturally
refer to thorn as warnings which ought not bo
unheeded by tho advocates of electoral re
form in England. . .
Of course thore must be some exaggeration
in all such representations, for whenever pub
lic virtuo becomes indignant, it becomes ox
travagant. But thcro ia no doubt of tho gono
ral truth of tho charge.
0real interesta, involving large investments
ofcapiul and promising enormous profits, nev
er havo been and nevor will bo scrupulous
what infiuenacii thoy uso to control or scoare
necessary legislation, and as almost all tho
industrial enterprises of tho country aro con
ducted by associations, there is nol only the
means, but tho organization neeonaary for cor
ruption on a largo aoale. ) ",..
While tho temptation to corrupt thus in
creases with our advancing wealth and enter
prise, tho temptation to bo corrupted is equally
increased by tho steady deterioration of the
politicians who aro gonerated by universal
suffrage. The tendency of our population at
tho North to congregate in oities, und the
wants of qualification in tho voters, renders it
impossible for candidates to trail to individual
character and r putation for sncdess. Tho bot
ter class of mon withdraw with disgust from a
dirty conflict, and the worse clan of mon are
willing to use any means to secure viotory.
Tho truth Ib, it appears to he very fast he
coming a fact, and. a very sorious one, that the
capital of the country finds it easier and more
certain to control the legislation of the country
by ouitsido infiuenco than by contesting seats
for the legislature boforo th people.
The condition of the oountry now, affords
peculiar facility to this sort of corruption.
The men who havo earnest conviotions are
such strong partiiano that they would pas
sionately rofuse to scrutinize the motivo of s
vote whioh served the party, while the great
bulk of ,the people are oithor apathetic or
sceptical, take no interest in politics, or believe
that all opinions are so unsottled that a man
has no moral responsibility as to whioh opin
ion he serves.
It remains to bo seen whether we of the
South are doomed to walk in tho . same down
ward path. It is very certain that with us
universal suffrage has created a class of voters
who aro peouliarly liable to such corrupting
influences, and if eduoation does correct such
a tendenoy, it will be very long before it is
general enough to bo felt.
With many faults, oar publia mon hitherto have
not been corrupt, and oven Our worse enemies
admitted that wo could hold up clean hands in
rebuke of political corruption. Whether wo can
touch pitch without being defiled, is one of the
problems which wo have to solve.

The Hot Sr-asoh is upon us, and with its
approach wo begin to murk a growing diminu
tion of business. Tho othm turn dignitatt is
largely enjoyed by tho attaches of our largest
jobbing houses. Rest and healthful recreation
tire sweet and welcome after a long protracted
term of hard work. But when rest and re
creation from the daily routino are unreliev
ed by sorious work, they become wearisome,
ind soon loso their altraotion. Healthful phy
lioal exercise, such as base hall, bowling, hunt
ing, boating, oto, should not be beneath the
it tent ion of any one, confined, during'tho busy
icason, to the desk, or to tho equally conn ti
ng duties of standing behind tho counter. 8a
urdny afternoon, thorofore, is very properly,
tnd by common consent, devoted to such relat
ion. Chess and backgammon have their votaries,
ind when indulged to a moderate extent, aro in
locent and improving. Out in many esses there
s still, oven aft or that allotment, considerable
imc on hand, which tho unhappy possessor
mows nol how to dispose of. In such case we
vould suggest useful road ing of all amuse
