M., yesterday, the alarm of fire was sounded, and the smoke proceeding from thc roof of COTES' old cotton press in Chalmers stree) soon attracted attention. Although the hour wai an unusual one, the firemen were promptly on th? ground, an 3 the fire was soon extinguished. Th? cotton presa had been in disuse for some time, anc was unoccupied by any one at the time. Thc origin of the fire is doubtful, but aa the roof wai shingled, it was supposed to have been commuai cated to it by ashes thrown from the neighboring house. But little damage was done to tho build ing as the streams of water thrown on it soon pu the flames to rout. Tho firemen were the princi pal sufferers, as their fine clothes and polisher boots were literally bespattered. EARLY CLOSING.-We call the attention, of al persons, not only of employers and employees, bu of the public generally, to the notice that appear in to-day's issue, regarding the early closing o certain stores on King street to-day, and ever; subsequent Saturday until October 1st. "', OPENING OF THE CITY RAILROAD CABS TO COLORED PEOPLE-Tho Directors of the Cha; ton City Railroad heid a meeting yesterday, resolved that all persons, "irrespective or co shall ride in the city cars. This will doab seem curious to our readers, b-t they wfll ! ui stand the reason for such a course from the ; joined correspondence. The Directors did not more than their duty. Such a course was im] live, and they could not resist- it. -Many tl and with good reason, that if tba President of load had pursued a wiser, and more pr&t Course, this action of the Directors would been unnecessary. J L The use of the "ohain gang" as a mode of legal punishment in this State, having been abused bv the authorities empowered to inflict such pun? ishment, is hereby discontinued, except in oases connected with prisoners sentenced to the peni? tentiary. All Post Commanders within the limits of this State ore hereby directed to enforce this Order, and report any action on the part of the civil au? thorities who refuse to obey the same. THE CATTLE TRADE.-One of the unfortunate results of the late war was the wholesale draft -mode upon the cattle in the State in order to feed the army. The stock -raisers have never recov? ered from this demand upon them, and the Charles? ton market hos been supplied only by the few cattle that had escaped the clutches of the Com? missary, or had been hidden in the swamps at the time. At the close of tho war every one became anxious to push their stock to market in order to raise money for supplies, and the cattle were col? lected from various ports of the country, ' and shipped to Charleston. This tended to lower the price of beef at the time, hut the temporary sup ply was soon exhausted, and the butchers were thrown upon their own resources to furnish the market. The railroads were not completed, anc there was no means of bringing Tennessee etoci into Charleston hut hy driving them, which wat laborious and expensive. Formerly cattle were brought in large drove! from the "West and Florida, but the war hos pro baoly drained both of theso sections of their re sources, as the supply has been extreme.; meagre. The meat market of Charleston has boci Gradually deteriorating and advancing in price until at present the quality and quantity are fa: behind the palmy days of yore. The high prict charged, twenty and thirty cents per pound,. maj be owing to the want of ?officient stock, hut wi tl the facilities for transportation now presented thia is inexcusable, and the condition of the market i a great tax upon persons of every class, but par ticularly upon the poor, who are often debarrei from tile uso of meat by the exorbitant prices de manded. Ten and fifteen cents was formerly considered i fair price, but with the same advantages for trans portation, twenty-five and thirty cents is no' charged, and the moat, of all kinds, is decidedly ii ferior. It is singular that the caterers of the mai ket do not endeavor to procure an abundance c meit, for certainly at the present time the qualit and .the price ore such as only necessity would at cept. MAYOR'S COURT, April 8.-A little colored bo; who said he had no father or mother, was sent i the?Freedmen's Orphan Asylum. .. * , A female, who is regarded as an old custome: .was fined $5 for being drunk and noisy in tl street. An Englishman, with his face full of blossom who was picked up from the pavement glorious drunk, paid $5 for making free with the sidewalk COURT or GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMI PLEAS-HON. R. This was a case of a family feud,, and the perso were arraigned for having set fire to the hon or J. SMITH HANLEY, about ono. .mile from t premises of the . d?fendante. <'? , It appeared, hy the evidence, that HANLEY h come into Christ Church Parish: after the war, ai had bought a small piece of land and had coi menced planting.'' He had induced the dan ghi of the defendant to marry him, and had, since t marriage, lived at variance with his mother-i law's family. . 'Warrants and cross warrante we frequent, but it was only unt? this charge of t son that the case was brought before a Court. The different witnesses, both for the defeni and; the prosecution were examined, .and thi combined evidence tended to show that the pro: cuting parties had been plainly at fault, and wt in short perjured, . . Neither the counsel for the defense or prose? tion essayed any argument, and with a shi charge from the Judge, the cas? was left to t Jury, who, without leaving their seats, returned verdict of not guilty. . ? - When the verdict was rendered .the Attornt General made a motion that a warrant of perjt be issued against HAMLEY, which waa concurred by the court, and .H SULKY waa arrested for i misdemeanor. ^ .. . "_ The evidence elicited in thia cas? plainly ..pro' that the charge was brought by malice, as ll BOLLOUOH and her immediate family were pro' to be honest and hard working, and their cond waa guaranteed by many of the most respecta I witnesses in the neighborhood., I HANLEY and hie wife were not only indioted perjury, but strong suspicions were raised t they had poisoned the late Mr. BOLLOUOH, I had intended perpetrating a similar crime u; the romainder of the family. . It shall not be lawful for any person, not having the license m this Act provided, or not being the regular agent runner or employee of a person having such li? cense, to invite, ask or solicit in the city or harbor of Charleston, the boarding or lodging of any of the crew employed on any vessel, or of any immigrant arriving m the said city of Charleston. VL The City Council shall take the application of any person applying for a license to keep a sailors' or immi? grant's boarding house, or sailor's or immigrant's hotel, In the city ot Charleston, and upon satisfactory evidence to them of the respectability and competency of such ap? plicant and of the suitableness of bia accommodations, shaU issue to him a license, which shall be good for one year, unless sooner revoked by said City Council, to keep a sailor's or immigrant's boarding house in the city of charleston, and to invite and solicit boarders for the same. VXL The City Council may, upon satisfactory evidence of thc disorderly cnaracter of any sailors' or Immigrant?* hotel or boarding house, licensed as hereinbefore pro? vided, or ot the keeper or proprietor of any such house, ar of any force, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation, In in? viting or soliciting boarders or lodgers for such house, on the part of such keeper or proprietor, or any of his agents, runners, or employees, or of any attempt to per? suade or entice any of the crew to desert irom any vessel in the harbor of Charleston, by such keeper or propne- ' tor, or any of rds agents, runners ar employees, revoke the license for keeping such house. VTTT Every person receiving the license hereinbefore provided lor shall pay to the city Council aforesaid the sum of twenty dollars. IX.
