Mirxa' SOPEB-PHOSI-HATE or LmE.-The failure
Of last year's crop should admonish the planter to
neglect nothing that would advance his interests
and tend to improve both his land and his crops.
Daring the psst few ? years many new fertilizers
have been introduced, but several have fallen far
below the expectations of those who have used
them. Under these droumatances it becomes ne?
cessary for the planter to nae ml y those that are
known to'be capable of recuperating the exhaust?
ed land. Those fertilizers that are composed of
lime have been generally found superior to com?
mon manures, and they have; been gradually in?
creasing in public favor. Tho ground and the crops
both" require subsistence, and lime enters largely
into the system of growing plants.
Mans* Nitrogenized Phosphate of Lime is one
ol the most superior fertilizers known, and has
been used by many with- great success. It may be
used for top dressing, and both before and after
planting the crop, as it cannot be lost by evapora?
tion, none fit its constituents' being volatile It
bas been found invaluable, both to the farmer and
thc horticulturists, as it can be applied at all sea?
sons of the year.. Messrs. KIN SHAN & HOWELL,

EXTENSIVE BOBBERIES,-The immunity which
our city, baa so long possessed from the burglarious
attempts of thieves has, unfortunately, been
brought to a close, and the light-fingered gentry
have recommenced their demonstrations.. A sin?
gular circumstance is that these robberies are
generally committed while justice is being meted
cot to some unlucky robber who has fallen into
the toils. Wa published an account on Tuesday
of a robbery at the shop of Mr. D. W. DAVIS; this
attempt was made to secure the skeleton and
master keys which were employed by Mr. DAVIS
|n his work. These keys would be invaluable to a
burglar, and the raid would havo been successful
if the lynx-eyed detectives had not traced the par?
ly to their dens and arrested them with their
spoils.
On Wednesday morning the store at the corner
of Burns' lane and Meeting street was entered at
S o'clock,"-and robbed of from $200 to $300. Tho
store was occupied by Mr. EBERHARDT as a grocery
ecUbhahment, and the thieves made a clean sweep.
The matter-was immediately placed in the hands
of the detectives, and by 5 P. M., the same day,
the articles were found, and the thieves arrested.
Tho goods stolon were two boxes of tobafoo, can?
dles, rice and groceries. *
The robbery of the Bhoe store in Anson 6treet,
which occurred on Monday nght, was traced up
by the vigilant detectives, who arrested the thieves,
and recovered a greater portion of tue goods,
with the exception of some that wore sold into the
country.
A store on East Bay was broken iuto by means
of a heavy bron crow-bar, but the thieves woro dis?
covered bofore they could collect any plunder, al?
though they hod opened thc Bato and taken out
twenty-five dol ors. One of tho parties arrested
had been concernid in five different robberies,
which have occurred recently at different points in
thc city.
Lieut. HENDRICKS ?nd his efficient corps of de?
tectives deserve the thanks of the community for
their efforts to trace tho rascals who have been
preying upon thom, and their success is sufficient
proof that when they are around thieves must
leave. Few cities'of the size of Charleston are less
afflicted with this curse, and it is principally
owing to the fact that the thioves are aware that
their capture and condemnation is sure.
MATOB S COOBT, May 2.-Tho boy John James,
who was imprisoned the day before for attempting
to walk off with a gentleman's money drawer, ap?
peared this morning as a witness against two
other juveniles, who he said wore his confederates,
but as his testimony was rather vague, and as his
position was such as to prc ve nt, the belief that all
ho said was Gospel, the two youths were dis?
charged, and John was sent back to his holo.
Two or three other cases, which were referred to
the Chief of Detectives, closed the business of the
day.
THE COUBT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON
PLEAS-Hon. B. MUMBO, Presiding.-The case of
THOS. BABBINGTON, a soldier in the Cth Begiment,
indicted for the murder of JOSEPH ELLIOTT, was
taken up. J. N. NATHANS and L. W. SPBATT, Esqs.,
appeared for tho defence.
HABBXNQTON had been indicted for a murder
committed on the 6th of November, 1866, and since
that time had been in the custody of the military
authorities. His trial had been delayed on this
account, as it Had not been decided whether the
civil courts had the jurisdiction. Several of the
principal witnesses who were present at thc kiding
had also been ordered away, and this had occasion?
ed some delay.
E. M. WHITING, Esq., testified that he had held
an inquest over tne body of ELLIOTT when notified
of tho murder, and had examined the different
parties and taken down their testimony. Ho knew
nothing of the case beyond what that investigation
elicited.
-GRIFFIN, a soldier in the 6th Begiment, tes?
tified that he knew the parties well; HABBTMGTON
had been in tho Guard Eouse for intoxication, and
while there had a quarrel with a man who hud
struck him. The troops had been paid off a day
or two previously, and a number of them had gone
to the city, and were drinking. He had gone, with
several others, to Mrs. CAMPS EN'S bar-room, in
King street, near Burns' Lan o, and was in there
when HABBINQTON entered. HABBINQTON made
some disturbance and was put out, and in passing
saw ELLIOTT, who asked him what he was doing;
the reply was " None of your business." A dis?
pute arose and be was knocked dpwn by ELLIOTT.
Ho had approached ELLIOTT angrily at the time, and
was the most powerful man. When down, HABBINO
TON must have drawn bis knife, and advancing on
ELLIOTT stabbed him in the throat, the blow being
directed toward the heart. ELLIOTT ran a few
pases and died. He did not see HABBINQTON again
until the jury of inquest.
MINNIE CAMTSEN deposed that she kept a lager
beor saloon in King street, and that sho remem?
bered on the night of the murder seeing a man
come in cursing to himself, and with a drawn knife
in his hand. She immediately went toward him,
and, with the assistance of others, pushed him
out. She did not know of any scuffle between EL?
LIOTT and the prisoner.
F. HBNBT said he was thc father of Mrs. CAMP
SEN, and was behind the bar at the time ELLIOT
GRIFFIN and others were in the room, beforo H AB?
BINGTON entered, but ho co aid not say who put
him out, as a screen was between them.
PATRICK MCDONALD, Sergeant, testified that he
knew both parties, and had heard that some one
had knocked HARRINGTON in the Guard Boom.
HARRINGTON came to him the morning of the 6th,
to get a knife of his which witness bad been keep?
ing for bim. He did not want him to take it, but
when HARRINGTON became vexed it was given to
bim. He did not see BABBINGTON again until be
saw him in bed about eight or nine P. M., and at
the same time received information that the knife
waa concealed under bis bed-sack ; went for it and
found it bloody. HABBIGTON made his attempt to
escape subsequently.
The knife used was a common sheath knife. The
prisoner bad been drunk and quarr oiling, but did
not make any threats against any ono when ask?
ing for the knife.
JNO. FRENCH, soldier, testified that about 8 or 9
P. M. he came into HARRINGTON'S room and saw
him hanging bv his hands to the window Bill.
HARRINGTON said that if he told he would treat
bim bice ELLIOTT. He immediately notified tho
Sergeant of it, and he went with a guard and
found HARRINGTON lying on the ground under the
window-his leg was sprained. He was taken up
and carried to the Guard House.
P. CAFFEY testified that ho was in CAMPSEN'S
bar-room when HARRINGTON carno in. A man
named DILLARD was standing outside, and HAR?
RINGTON spoke harshly to him. DILLARD came in
and said some one wished to fight him. He was
advised to sit down. HARRINGTON drew his knife,
and was pushed out. They had a fuss previously
at the Citadel. Saw ELLIOTT in tho room at tbe
same tune, but be bad nothing to do with HAB
BTNATON, and did not know who pushed him out.
Lieutenant Boss testified to being on duty the
day of the murder, and saw HARRINGTON when re?
leased Cro.n confinement at guard-mounting, he
was thc:; sober ; saw him in the guard-house that
night having his leg bandaged-was again sober.
This dosed the testimony for the prosecution ;
and, the defence having none, the argument for
the defence was opened by J. H. NATHANS, who
was replied to by the Attorney General, and the
defence dosed by L. W. SPBATT, Esq.. Judge
Mtrcrao charged the jury who returned a verdict
of Manslaughter.
. The principal witnesses in this case, who were
eye-witnesses of the assault, were stationed at
other points, and the proof of tho killing rested
upon a few who saw the parties at different times
during the day. HARRINGTON confossed to being
too drunk to remember any thing of tho transac?
tion, but his subsequent conduct proved this to bo
false. The Counsel for the defence presented the
case in the strongest points, and conduted it with
great ability, but the guilt of the prisoner was too
dear for bim to escape conviction.
