The" robbery or the shoo store in Anson street, which wenrred on Monday, righi, was traced np by the vigDan? detectives, whoSa-rcatedthe thieves, and recovered a greater portion, of the goods, with the exception of some that were sold into the country. A store on East Bay was broken into by moans , of a heavy iron crow-bar, but tho thieves were diu c ovo red before they could collect any plunder, al? though they had opened the safe and taken out twenty-five dol.ars. Ono of the parties arrested had been concerned in five different robberies, which have occurred recently at different points in thc city. lieut. HENDRICKS and his efficient corps of de? tectives deserve tho thanks of the community for their efforts to traco the rascals who have been preying: upon them, and their BUCCCSS is sufficient proof that when they are around thieves must leave.' Few ?sities of the size of Charleston aro less afflicted with this curse, and it is principally owing to tho fact that the thieves are aware that their capture and condemnation ia sure. MAYORS COURT, May 2_The boy John James, who was imprisoned the day before for attempting to walk off with a .gentleman's money drawer, ap? peared this morning as a witness against two other juveniles, who he said were his confederates, but as his testimony was rather vague, and as his position was such as to prevent tho belief that all he Baid was Gospel, the two youths were dis? charged, and John was sent bock to his hole. Two or three other cases, which were referred to the Chief of Detectives, closed the business of the day. TETE CO ?BT OF GENERAL SESSIONS Aim COMMON PLEAS-Hon- R. MUNRO, Presiding.-The case of THOS. HAREINGTON, a soldier in the 6th Regiment, indicted for the murder of JOSEPH ELLIOTT, was taken up. J. N. NATHANS and L. W. SPRATT, Esqs., appeared for the defence. HABRPTOTON had been indicted for a murder committed on the 6th of November, 1866, and since that time had been lu the custody of tho military authorities. His trial had been delayed on this account, as it had not been decided whether the civil courts had the jurisdiction. Several of the principal witnesses who were present at thc kiding had also been ordered away, and this had occasion? ed some delay. E. M. WHHTNO, Esq., testified that he had held an inquest over the body of ELLIOTT when notified of the murder, and had examined the different parties and taken dow.) their testimony. He knew nothing of the case beyond what that investigation elicited. -GRIFFIN, a soldier in the 6th Regiment, tes? tified that he knew the parties well; HARRINGTON had been in the Guard House for intoxication, and: while there had a quarrel with a man who had struck him. The troops had been paid off a day or two previously, and a number of thom had gone to the city, and were drinking. He had gone, with several others, to Mrs. CAMPSEN'S bar-room, in. King street, near Bums'Lane, and was in there when HARRINGTON' entered. HARRINGTON made some disturbance and was put out, and in passing saw ELLIOTT, who asked ' him what he was doing; the reply was .** None of your business." A dis? pute arose and he was knocked down by ELLIOTT. He had approached ELLIOTT angrily at the time, and was the most powerful man. When down, HARRING? TON must have drawn his knife, and advancing on ELLIOTT stabbed him in the throat, the blow being directed toward the heart. ELLIOTT ran a few poses and died. He did not see HARRINGTON again untH the jury of inquest. MINNIE CAMPSEN deposed that she koot a lager beer saloon in King street, and that she remem? bered on the night of the murder seeing a man come in cursing to himself, and with a drawn knife in his hand. She immediately went toward him, and, with the assistance of others, pushed him out. She did not know of any scuffle between EL? LIOTT and the prisoner. F. HENEY said he was the father of Mrs. CAMP SEN, and was behind the bar at the time ELLIOT GRIFFIN and others were in the room, before HAR? DINGTON entered, but he could not say wb.tr put him ou t, as a screen was between them. PATRICK MCDONALD, Sergeant, testified that he knew both parties, and- had heard that some one had knocked HARRINGTON in the Guard Boom. HARRINGTON came to him the morning of the 6th, to get a knife of his which witness bad been keep? ing for him. He did not want him to take it, but when HARRINGTON became vexed it was given to him.; He did not see HARRINGTON again nntQhe saw him in bed about eight or nine P. M., and at the same time received information that the knife was concealed under his bed-sack ; went for it and found it bloody. HARRISTON made his attempt to escape subsequently. j The knife used was a common sheath knife. The prisoner had been drunk and quarrelling, but did | ? hot make any threats against any one when ask? ing for the knife, r . Ssa. FRENCH, soldier, testified that about 8 or 9 P. M. he came into HARRINGTON'S room ., a?t?T saw him huTip??g by bia- hands to the window ?ill HARRINGTON said that if he told he,would treat him like ELLIOTT. He immediately notified the Sergeant of it, and he went with a guard and found. HARRINGTON lying on the ground under 'the window-his leg was sprained. :. He was- taken np and carried to the Guard House. P. GAFFES testified that he was in CAMPSEN^ bar-room, when HARRINGTON came in. A man nam ed DILLARD was studing outside, and HAR? RINGTON epokft harshly to him. DILLARD came in and said some one wished tc fight him. He was advised to alt down. HARRINGTON drew his knife, and was pushed oat. They had a fuss previously at the Citadel.; Saw ELLIOTT in the room at tbe same time, but he had nothing to do with HAS RTNATON, and did not know who pushed him ont. ? Lieutenant Boss testified to being- on duty the day of the murder, and saw HARRINGTON when re? leased from confinement at guard-mounting, ho was then sober; saw him in the guard-house that night having his leg bandaged-was -again sober! This, closed the testimony for . the. prosecution ; and, the defence having none, the argument for the defence was opened by J. H. NATHANS, who was replied to by the Attorney General and the defence closed by L. W. SPSATT, Esq. Judge MUNRO charged the jury who returned a verdict pf Manslaughter. ii The principal witnesses in this case, who were eye-witnesses of the assault, were stationed, at other points, and the proof of the killing rested upon a few who saw the parties at different times during tho day. HARRINGTON confessed to being top drank to remember any thing of the transac? tion, but his subsequent conduct preved this to be falser The Counsel for the defence presented the case in the strongest points, and oondutod it with great ability, but the guilt of the prisoner was too clear for him to escape conviction. ; UNITED STATES CIRCUIT C^URT-HON. GEO. S. BRYAN, residing.-The petition of Wx. MUNRO, Esq., to be admitted to practice in the Courts of the United States in South Carolina, was read by by C. H. SmoNTON, Esq., and on his motion hs was admitted. The case of the Rodgers Locomotive Works cs j the trustees of the Sooth Carolina Railroad, was postponed on account of the sickness of J. B.
