In the present age the observances of May Day sro confined to the enthronization of a May Queen, who is iftaajtart with suitable addresses by her hege subjects, the coronation takes place in some largs butlering in a city or at some grove in the rural districts, where dancing and music add to che enjoyment of the occasion. Our medieval forefathers seem to have cherish? ed a deep admiration for nature, and the month of May, is celebrated in the earliest attempts at Eng? lish lyric poetry. May was considered by some tho season that was to last forever in heaven, and CHAUGBB, who embodies in bis writings the poetry of that age, frequently sings the praises of May. Many proverbs were in vogue among the farmers, regarding this month, some of which are known at the present day. This month has generally been considered the fairest and brightest in the calen? dar but S singular idea prevailed in ancient times that it was an unlucky month in which to be mar? ried. The approach ol May is thus beautifully de? scribed by Spenser. PERSONAL.-We had a visit last night from Mr BEAUMONT DUBBINS, business agent of MAC ETOY'B Bibernicon, a Panorama of a Tour in Ire land. Mr. D. is staying at the Charleston Hotel endeavoring to make arrangements for the exhi? bition of his paintings in this city. The panorama is highly spoken of in the Savannah papers, when Mr. MAO E vox is exhibiting it at this time. EMPOBIUM OF FASHKNB.-Tho ladies will bc pleased to notice that in audition to a large steel of millinery goods, Mrs. S. J. COTCHETT bas just received a select lot of dress and cloak trimmings, which will command their attention. Mrs. C. has endeavored to make her establishment worthy of its name, and- her customers and the public oan have do difficulty, in making selections from the large assortment offered for their inspec? tion. ? SPIRITUAL.--Merrie May was ushered in last night in a manner that immediately carried us back to "ye olden time," and the sight of a huge wassail bowl, borne triumphantly on the shoulders bf one of Afric's ebon sons, induced us to think that we had mistaken the Beason, and misty vis? ions of coming spirits floated dimly o'er the pa? pers. An editor's path m life is covered with thorne, but when cheered by such acceptable gifts as that sent hut night, he is forced to forget his sorrows and enter into the discussion of the am? ber fluid a new man. Our friend PASSONS, of the Pa villi on, has proved "himself to be deserving of his name, for he understands the communion of spirits, and such inducements as he can furnish w?? make the most ultra toto taller renounce his creed in disgust. The Normal School, Rev. H. M. IMPORTANT LBGAL CASE.-The Pheonix says : A bill has been ' flied' by the South Carolina Railroad Company to enjoin the construction of tho Colum? bia and August* Railroad, and is now pending be? fore his Honor Chancellor CARROLL, in Columbia. The injunction is asked, on the grounds that the Colombia and Augusta Road is being constructed in violation of tho exclusive'privileges granted by the charier of the South Carolina Railroad. With? out expressing any opinion on the merits of the question in vqlved, it seems a monstrous proposi? tion that thin application should be made at this late day, after'theL States of South Carolina and Georgia, the cities of Columbia and Augusta, and the citizens of both Slates, who have subscribed, have already^ boen committed to the ente,prise, and after fully $600,000 has been expended or is involved ip contracta. ; This road is demanded by tho necessities-bf Hire times-it is needed tb de? velop the great interest? of the country-and we regret exceedingly that the South Carolina Rail? road Company have deemed it necessary to inter? pose This hindrance to' tue progress of the enter? prise, although, to a cei tain extent, private rights are involved.' The South Carolina Railroad Company is repre? sented by Gen. JAMES CONNER, of Charleston, and the Columbia and Augusta Railroad Company by Messrs. ARTHUR, MELTON & MELTON, of Columbia. The argument was to be concluded on Tuesday. MAYORS COURT-April 80.-William Gardner and Dan King, two colored individuals with whom a coldness had for some time existed, inconsequence of tho latter having called the former "a d-d detective,'.'.and who met under the porch of the St. Michaels and clinched, and would have done griovctni narin;,but 'for the sudden appearance of sevex&policeBi?a-who were going to dinner, were each fined $5. , A female with familiar face and helmet shaped halt; who had boen'imbibing a little two much corn juice, and had put her foot through her hoops, in exhibiting a new step in dancing, was Unod $5. Ned Heary,. a ? particularly small black boy, who had nobody to take care of him, was sent to Mr. PrLSBUEY, that he may be attended to in the Or? phan Asylum. \ COURT OF GEKEBAL SESSIONS AND COMMON PLEAS-HON. R. MUNBO, Presidin Tho case of the State va. Samuel Cannon, colored, for burglary and larceny, was called. The parties were arraigned on Monday, and Major Larry the p&rtner of Cannon, plead guilty to tho charge. Cannon was defended by R. W. SEYMOUR, Esq. The evidence proved that Larry had secreted himself in the store of Mr. H. W. A a BENS in Nas? sau street, and after Mr. A. had rot ned, unbarred the door to. his confederates. Cannon and Larry after loading themselves with tho contents of tho store, carried their plunder to a neighboring house, where it was concealed. The evidence was very clear aa to Cannon's guilt, and although ably defended, the Jury returned a vordict of " Guilty pf Grand Larceny." - The case consumed nearly the whole morning, and as the witnesses in the other cases were not ready, the Court adjourned to 10 A. M., to-day. UNITED STATES CTBOUTT COURT.-On motion ol' 0. H. SIMONTON, Esq., WALTER B. METTS, Esq., ot' Yorkville, 3. C., was admitted-to practice in the United States Courts of South Carolina. The District Attorney handed au indictment to the Grand Jury, in tho case of United States cs. EDWARD A. FOWLER, for purchasing arms and clothing from United States soldiers, with a view of aiding thein to desert. The Judge delivered a brief charge,' explanatory of the crime aud tho Act of Congress passed to reach it. The Grand Jury soon returned and brought in a True Bil.'. His Honor Judge BB?AN then thanked the Jun-for the faithful discharge of their duties, and took this occasion to make some pertinent remarks on trials by jury in general, and tho great responsi? bility this institution entails on the citizens who are' called upon to serve tho State in that capacity. He then discharged tho Grand Jury. Upon motion of the District Attorney tho trial of WDLBON E. PBOTHRO was continued till Thurs? day week, by cunseut.
