Montgomery and Jefferson streets, by which a
most worthy young man named Henry C. Harden
lost his right foot, it is feared he may lose bis leg.
Having some belting to -adjust on a pulley he
mounted the saw table, in which was a large circu?
lar saw going at great speed, but wbich he unfor?
tunately did not observe was in motion. While at?
tending to this duty he accidentally struck his foot
with such force against the saw as to cut tho foot
almost entirely on, leaving nothing bot one toe
and cutting back to nearly, the ankle.-Sa vannait

Edward White, on Harding street, whose remark?
able illness was meationea in the Express two or
ihree dayseinoe,-spoke and received nourishment
yesterday for the first time in the lost twenty-one
days. Wo learn Irom the esteemed minister, who
fias been in constant attendance upon her, that
she expressed herself as having been perfectly sen?
sible of all that passed around her during ber ill?
ness. She mentioned several scenes aud events
that occurred at her bedside, wbich, at the time,
were of painful interest to her, though she was un
able m any way to 'exprese, or even intimate, her
cognizance of them. This is one of the most re?
markable cases that has ever occurred in this cum

NEW YOBS, April 27.-As the great moving day
approaches-as the first of May draws near at
hand-the war between tho landlords and tenants
grows fiercer, and tho pay-rental batt lus aro more
stubbornly contested. Tho landlords, however,
have tho better of the contest, and rather than
move from the position they have takon this yoar,
will allow the tenants to move from tho houser
they had taken last year. Many of the latter have
been compelled to retail those houses at tho ad?
vanced rents, and to meet tho extra expense by
lctting out floors and portions of their residences
to other unfortunates who would othorwiso bo
rendered houseless in a few days, or leap from a
warm frying pan into a still warmer fire by yield?
ing themselves up a prey to the tender mercies of
the-unconscionable boarding house keepers. Quito .
a reaped able number of the indignant rent payers. '
resolved not to die without a struggle, or at least
to go down with colors flying, have formed them?
selves into an association, and held a meeting last
night for the purpose of devising measures by
means of which to procure the passage of a law by
the Legislature affixing the price of rents propor?
tionate to the assessed value of the property. Thc
passage of such a law would of course have tuc
effect of seriously depreciating tho value of real
estate; ?nd besides it is doubtful whether the Leg?
islature has the right to make such an enactment;
bat as we Uve in an age in which might is the
standard of right, and in which State Consentions
can be changed or violated at the pleasure of thc
powers that be, there is no telling what laws may
not be p&ssed.
