grains in the State during 1865. Of wheat there
.were grown 11,579,127 bushels, valued at $18,894,
?952. 558,910 acres wore planted with barley. '1 ho
yield to the acre was 273 bushels. Tho total crop
was 15,462,783 bushels, valued at $10,O00.fXH). The
oat crop was 2,078,783 bushels, worth about $700,
000. The hay crop of the State for the some year
?a"set down at 500,000 tons, and its value was not
less than $5,000,000. The number of bushels of
Aetna raised the same year was 150,110 ; the value
of^Whihh:may~tfe -pot1 down'at $250,000. Indian

tion. The wagon was lound on examina.ion. to
contain five sacks, in each of which was a human
body. Ono, was the corpse of a girl about eight
years ot' age whose features showed little of the
pallor of death. The hair was light colored, and
the little hands were folded'over its robe of fine
muslin and lace. Another was the body of a y oung
woman not more than twenty years of age, who
from appearance had been recently interred. These
bodies had been snatched from their resting place
in the grave, and wero to be delivered to a doctor
at $10 each. The wretohes were provided with! all

liament an important statement with regard to
the expansion of the Confederation.. In reply to
an inquiry as to the obstacles existing to the en?
try of the whole of Hesae-Darmstadt (of which
now only one province belongs to the Confedera?
tion), ho said that previous to such a step the
consent of Austria, of the South German States,
and of the people must be obtained. The answer
shows that the Prussian Government is determin?
ed to disregard the interference of NAPOLEON in

Additional advices concerning the situation in
Mexico confirms the news previously published.
Three commissioners were sent by MAXIMILIAN to
JUAREZ, at San Luis, with an offer of capitulation.
Guarantees for the lives and property ot the.
prominent chieftains, it is said, are demanded by
the commissioners, but will not be granted by
JUAREZ. Mr. SEWARD'S messenger, bearing the
intercession in favor of MAXIMILIAN, was furnished \
with an escort at Matamoros for Son Luis Potosi,
where he expected to find'the Mexioan President.
Iti8 reported also that MAXIMILIAN had offered to
surrender if he waa granted a free departure from
thecountry.

liffioulties by which he was surrounded, and

"The .year, h&s .been one.of.great difficulty
and. labor. At the beginning-of the year the
work . wasJ in progress to close the gap from

rolling stock, left,. to do the business of the
road?" "The trains were then only running from
Alston to the upper end of the line. On tho 1st
of1 March the company commenced/receiving
freights.in Columbia to be sent through; but to
do this, they could only be carried on the road
to Preshleys, there to be unloaded, hauled to
the^river in wagons, and carried by boats to
Alston;! and! there reloaded on the. cars to bo
sent to the various points of destination,. As
the work progressed, the distance run by boats
was diminished, until on the 21st of May the
track reached the river at Alston, and the
boating-ceased; but still the freights, both up
and down, had to bc unloaded, hauled in
wagons to and from the banks of ?he river, and
both freight and. passengers, oarried across in.
jboats, nntil the 1st-of September, when. the
bridge was completed, and the entire line re?
opened. Th? difficulty and expense consequent
upon : this state .of things, when constant
changes of places of shipment were necessari?
ly made, and the confusion which resulted
from an irregular way of working (he road,
may. well be imagined. From the lBt oif Jijne
until the completion of the bridge many of ?
those employed upon the work were eick, as
well as the agents, clarks and laborers at thc
depots on each side .of the river at Alston,
which greatly delayed the completion of the
work."
And._when. we consider that by the last ac?
counts the road had so far accomplished its
work that all freight -which had been received at
its.depots, with the exception of the last three
or four days, had been forwarded, the energy
of the President and employees of tho road will
be fully appreciated.
The gross income of the road from all
sources has been $251,931.19. Its current ex?
penses $144,730.37. Malting a net income of

The probabilities are that the business of thc
road will bc very largely increased in the
coming year; for very large quantities of.guano.
have been transported on the line, and the"
prospect is fair for: a very great increase of j
freight on the coming crop.
We shall probably return to this subject
when we publish the report; and.in the mean
time will expresa the hope that means will be
found to put ita finances in easy condition, and
thuar secure to the State the full benefit of one
of the most important roads that runs through
tts territory.
