THE STEAMSHIP CHAMPION.-This now and valua? ble addition to thc superior line of side-wheel steamships, to bo run botweon this port :and New York, consigned to Messrs. She is in charge of Captain L. M. MURRAY, so favorably known to all the travelling public before the war, as master in the old and favorite lino of New York J steamships. -o WHirEVfASuT?to.-As this is the timo of year I whon one desires to renovate the interior of his dwelling as well as to improve tho appearance of his fenco3 and outhouses, we place before our readers a most excellent recipe for mixing white? wash: "Tako a clean, water-tight barrel, or other ; suitable cask, and put into it a half bushel of lime. Black it by pouring waler over it, boiling hot, and ? ia sufficient quantity to cover it five inches deep, and stir it in water, and add two pounds of sul? phate of zinc and on? of common salt. These will cause the wash to harden, and prevent-its crack . ing, which gives an unseemly appearance lo the work. If desirable, a beautiful cream color may be added to tho above wash by adding three I pounds of yollow ochre; or a good pearl or lead color, by adding lamp, vine or ivory- black. For I iiwn color, add four pounds of amber, Turkish or I American-the hitter is thc cheapest-one pound | of .Indian red, and"onc pound common lamp-black. MAYOR'S COURT-April 24.-James Gaillard, a colored inexperienced youth, to whom was given a . live dollar bill, by one J. Lopez, that he might 1 take ten cents,out of it to pay himself fer a job, and who went to change tho bul,'but never came back, and who whtm he was caught, admitted he had bought a pair of shoes with part of the money, was locked up for ten days, which will save so much wear of his sole leather. .' J-Us. Smoko, a colored woman who .vas brought to the Guard House in a cart, and did not make her appearance before his honor, was accused by a girl named Elvira, of steal? ing a few days ago a sum of money from out the mattrass of the prosecutrix and of blowing it out, and, also of visiting her room on Tuesday night and ^attempting to. carry., off .a. bundle of I clothes, but being detected and threatened with the police, laid the apparel on the bed, and finish? ed the evenings performance by raising the window, which was near thirty feet high, and making an extraordinary leap to the ground. As there appa? rently were no bones broken, it is rational to sup? pose that her head struck first. His Honor decided that if she was really hurt she should be sent to the hospital, but if um. 'tired she should bo locked ' np for ten days. A case of carrying concealed weapons, was or? dered to be sent to the Provost Marshal. Two or three casos of determined opposition to the present tempor?neo agitation, which is perva? ding the Eastern States were brought np, and dis-' cussed, with his honor, who to judge by his manner seemed to have the best of the argument. COURT OF GENERAL SESSIONS AND COMMON 1 PLEAS-Judge MUNROE presiding.-The Court was opened at the usual hour, and the Jury answering to their names, the case of tho State ss. HELENA | PLODGEE, nee SMITH, for receiving .stolen goods, was called, JOHN PHILLIPS, Esq., appearing for tho defence. . " U After some challenges ' the Jury 'were organized and the witnesses were examined. From their testimony it appeared that shortly ofter the close of the war some Cotton was stolen from the plan? tation of Mr. MUIRHEAD, in Christ Church Parish, which was subsequently found to be in the posses? sion of HELENA PLODGEE, then SMITH, who kept I store at the corner of Concord and March streets. The prosecution went to prove that the Cotton | was received, knowing it to be stolen, and was ! purchased from irresponsible parties, but the de- j fence argued that when the Cotton was rafted to the city by the negroes it was at that time when no quostions were'asked as to the ownership, but bargains were made by every one, especially re girding Cotton. The Judge briefly summed np the leading points j and charged the Jury, who, without leaving their seats, returned a verdict of not guilty, and the prisoner was discharged. Charleston Nook was once composed whollj these farms, but as the property increased in va it was cut up into building lots, and tho farm moved further into the country. At present, I street is the boundary of the city propor, but yond that, the cultivated lands commence, i the farms are of all sizes, from a few acres 1 young plantation. The completion of the street railroad to tho h of Rutledge street, enabled many persons to v these farms, and from the time the first s tra wi ry was seen above ground there has been a c slant stream of customers. NUNAN s farm the street of the samo name has long been rendezvous for epicures, and the reputation of early strawberries extends from Charleston to Hub. They have been shipped by every steal yet the supply seems inexhaustible, and prom to continuo during the Bummer. To those ii ested in agriculture a visit to NUNAN'S farm w both please and interest ; for his time is not d ted to strawberries, but is divided between the ferent products to be found on a well condu farm.
