TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 23, 18G7.
. . A JLIFK'S LOSS.
Do yon remsmber tho ?nmmcr day
You lound mo down by Uio ruined mill ?
Tba ?liles wore blue, and the waters bright.
And shadows glanced on thc windy hill.
And the stream moaned on.
You eat by my atdo on the mose grown loy,
vfhere one whom I loved last night had stood
I heard his voice, like an undertone.
While you talked to mc in that solitudo,
And tho stream moaned Cn.
You did not tell mo your heart was mino
You only said that my face was lair.
That silk and satins should robe my form,
And jowels should Hash amid my hair.
And tho stream moaned on.
You did not ask me to givo vou love
You did not touch my lips or my brow
Contented you were with my plighted troth
And never a kiss to seal the vow.
And tho stream moaned on.
You went away with your lofty port.
And smiled os you uttered your light good-bye,
But tho wind stolo down from the frowning hill,
And stood at my eldo with a gasping sigh.
And the stream moaned on.
You remember tho pomp of your bridal morn
The jewels that mocked the bright sunshine
The rustling silks-the ringing mirth
The flush of roses-tho flow or wine
While the crowd looked on.
But I saw a sight they did not soe
A guest they knew not of was there
Heart of my heart, he came to mock
Hy bridal vows with his pale despair.
And my soul moaned on.
You got that day what you bargained for
My hair to braid your jewels in.
My form to dock with your silken robes,
My face io show to your haughty kin.
But my soul moaned on.
Tatt not of love, you come too late
You cannot dispel my heart's eclipso
Where your image should be a corpse lies shrined,
And no voice, comes rrom the death-cold lips,
-'?'.' Though my soul moans on.
Some summer day I shall wander down
Whore the waters flow by tho ruined mill
Where tho shadows come, and tho shadows go,
There at the foot of the windy hill.
And the stream moans on.
You will find mo there, 'neath tho whisporing wave,
Colder and stiller than ever bet?re
TLe dreams I dreamed and the hopes I hoped
Will bo hushed to silence forever moro
Though the stream moans on.
. THE NEW ?COTTON LOROS."
The Southern climate appears to exercise a most
deleterious influence upon many of our visitors
from abroad. While their physical condition is
generally, benefltted by the sojourn, their moral
constitution not unfrequently suffers a violent at?
tack'of kleptomania {anglice-thieving), to which
the whole man sometimes makes an unconditional
surrender.- Witness the following delectable dis
closures, which wo extract from the New York
Tomes of Saturday :
Further particulars have been obtained regard?
ing the robbery, of Navy-Paymaster Belknap, in
the Brooklyn Navy Yard, anaof the capture and
identity of -the persons arrested. The1 robbery oc?
curred four years ago, and amounted to $130,000 of
money belonging to tue Government. Aa no ex?
planation, could be given by Mr. Belknap, and the
circumstantial evidence was against .htm, his dis
missalfroui tho navy was recommended by Marshal
Muiray, and he was dropped from the rolls. Since
this dismissal, with the aid of friends and detec?
tives, he has labored untiringly to erase the odium
from his name by tho arrest and conviction of the
guilty persons. The robbers, having evaded pur?
suit for four years, have at last bean secured, and
are now in charge of Marshal Murray and Colonel
W'ooi' "Chief- oi the'Treasury detectives, and will
.soon betaken to New York. .The persons arrested
are the most successful and dangerous thieves and
burglars living, having all of them been raised and
educated to tho profession in England. The follow?
ing are their names: Phil. Stanley alias "Fouriinger

JJcc.; "Wm. Walton altos "Brummy," "Bob Smith,"

master-spirit of the robbery, was a protege of ' old
Jack-Adams of England, and was some timo since
pardoned out of the penitentiary, to which he bad
been sentenced for ten and a half years, for open?
ing and robbing fifteen of Herring's safes. .He is
very wealthy, as indeed aro all the persons, and
did a prominent brokerage business for some time
in Wall- street, under the nomo . of DeWitt C.
Wright. The day after the Brooklyn robbery, this
man,-having every appearance of a gentleman,
accosted >f arah ai Murray on Pino street,
-and' began' ' conversing .. about the robbery.
Be stated, that Bellman "was a gambler,
that ho. knew, him well, and that he (Belknap)
j?had lost tho money in a Broadway hell. As he was
passing, along, he remarked to the- Marsh al that
"he was in a-hurry then, but that he'.would, duriog
the-day, call at his office, and show'the Marshal

the.street, and Mr. Murrah has not seen, him since

The Count do Launay is expected hero at the be?
ginning of next woek. Ho is to placo his creden?
tials in the hands of tho King of Piussia before
tho arrival of Prince Humbert. The Provincial
Corret-pondonco, speaking or tho ? treaties con
Ludod with tho governments of tho South, in its
torn affirms that there is no contract of
special guarantee with Hesso -Darmstadt,
which ia sufficiently engaged toward Prus?
sia and tho Northern confederation bv
tho provinco of Oberhassen and tho fort?
ress of Mayonce. All I told von on tho subject
is thus conti rm od. Tho ministerial journal also
declares that the publication of the treaties hos
taken place with a viow to tho affairs of Gornianv.
Much notice has been taken of tho lottor of Victor
Emanuel to Count do Bismarck in January last,
which tho Prussian Moniteur has just published.
This communication, very flattering to the Count,
testifies to thc excellent relations between the two
countries.
Holland Not to Cede Luxembourg.
[From the Independence Beige, March 30.]
Om-correspondent at Luxembourg sent us yester?
day evening by telegraph an important piece of I
nows. The government of the Grand Duchy has
roceivod from thc Hague an authorization to con?
tradict in tho most formal manner all tho rumors
relating to the cession of Luxembourg to Franco.
He adds that tho greatest joy prevailed in the city
in cons?quence ot that intelligence The Dutch
official journal, which wo received this morning,
continus this news, but with a restriction taking
away indeed a httlo of its reassuring character, as
it declares that thero ncvor could bo any question
of such a proceccling without tho great Powers in?
terested coming to an understanding on the sub?
ject. From all this it follows that it tho cession is
not already made, at least it may bo accomplisho
and that the Boyal Grand Duke would not be tho
man to throw any obstacle in the way. Thus are con?
firmed, at least provisionally, the reserves we have
here never ceased to oppose, not to the fact itself
of negotiations between Paris and the Hague, but j
to the news that these ovorturos had already- ended
in a bargain by which Luxembourg was actually
sold to France.
THE Xew YorK Herald, of tho 18th instant, speaks
as follows of the departure of the steamship Great
Eastern for that port:
Tho Great Eas torn has again started on a trip
across the Atlantic, taking with her one hundred I
and ninety-ono passengers and a small quantity of
freight. At half-past eight o'clock yesterday morn?
ing she passed tho lower quarantine, and there
she was obliged to "lay to" and await tho five o'clock
tide to float ncr over the bar. As by this time she
is doubtless rapidly increasing the distance betweon
this city and herself it may not be uninteresting
to know whether the trip to this p ort will be likol/
to prove profitable. On entering the port she was
registered at 20,152 tons, and on clearing she reg?
istered 19,140 tons. Her tonnage duty on entering
amounted to $6,045 60, and this, together - with
harbor master's fees, health officer's fees, pilot's
fees, stamps, permits, and other charges, amount
to about $7,000. This only includes expenses on
entering the port, and wnen ic connection with
those are taken tho salaries of officers, crew and
attendants, cost of painting and repairing, and
other incidental expenses, it will scarcely be ima?
gined tnat ono hundred and ninety-one passengers
paying $100 each, could furnish funds enongn to
meet the expenditures.
A VEEMONT NUGGET-A "BepubUcan" lady, of j
this city, lately returned from a visit to Brattle
boro', where sno board a sermon which decidedly
impressed her. As it is quite in the Vermont style
ot doing things, we are willing to quote a singlo
sample of its quality, just to show Connecticut
people what the fashions are up in Vermont. The
sermon was preached in the orthodox church, by
tho Hov. Mr. Sheffield. In the oourse of Ms sor- j
mon he aimed to enforce the idea that the world j
has become exceedingly sinful of late:-and tho
daily defalcations, murders, adulteries, and crimes
of Congress, that all broke loose-upon' tho- land
soon after the rise of Badioalism to power, would j
certainly Seem to justify, that conclusion. To illus?
trate' tho ' pitch ot- depravity, at which the people '
bav ; at last arrived, the Vermont preacher said:
? "The Lord Jesus Christ looks upon tho human
race, at the ' present day, with the same feeling
that -toe looked upon tue Copperheads, a year
ago."
- Wo aro told that the lady referrred to, albeit her?

brig, to a direct port in Ireland, with Corn at ls Od.
Corros-Tho market is without decided change. Sales
1,200 bales at 20c for Middling Uplands.
Messrs. Cornwall & Zercgo, iu their Weekly Cotton
Circular, thus quote tho market:
Wo havo to report for tho week au unsettled and de?
clining market, closing with quotations fully 2,'.. cents
per pound lower tha t tho opening prices of Saturday.
Tho continued decline in Liverpool in tho absence of
all power or wish on the part ol speculators or holders to
sustain the market, has carried prices lo a lowor point
than thomosiiuveteralo bears havo prophesied wo should
roach bolero the noxt season's crop was put on tho mar
ket. Tho losses on cotton have been so very heavy and
so disastrous, that commission houses do not hold cot?
ton on which the margins arc swept awuy by thc decline
in prices, and our market is well supplied with offerings
of cotton put on tho market to bo sold. Thc sales con?
tinue largely for export. The dry goods market contin?
ues so un Ba tlaloc tory, and the manufacturers, sharing in
the goncral losses from the decline of cotton and goods,
have become cautious buyers, and ora not tempted to
purchase even at present low figures. Thc exports this
week aro 14,503 bales. Tho engagement? for next week.
9000 bales. Freights by strom, ,lad to 5-lCd; by sail,!>?d
to 3-lOd, dull. Too receipts of cotton at ali ports for tho
week ending April 19, about 25,000 boles.
Wo have, during thc post week, made a thorough can?
vass of all the public und private Cotton warehouses iu
New ?ork and Brooklyn, also every pier on which Cotton
is being received, and find the stock to be os follows : In
storehouses, 125,000 bales; on piers, 1000 bales ; on ship?
board not cleared, 9000 bales; iola!, 135,000 bales. This
'canvass shows tho stock to bo much less than tho esti?
mated amounts. Our lost canvass was inadu in Septem?
ber, or seven mouths ago. Our stock at that time wu?
100,000 bales. Our receipts since havo been 6:10,000,
mating a total ot 620,000 bales. Tho exports to Europe
have been 315,000 bales, leaving a ba.ance of 305,000
boles, from which deduct the present stock, 135,000
bales, shows 170,000 bales hove been forwarded to other
points. The great difference between tho actual and tho
estimated amount of atoct ought not to occur, and to
prevent any such errors in tho future wo shall ourselves
take account of the stock ut least quarterly.
Tho Cotton Goods market, in sympathy with the Cot?
ton market, is unsettled, and prices are somewhat lower.

BOSTOX BOOT ISO SHOE MAUSET.-For tho week ending
April 18.--Business iu the boot and shoe market for thc
last few days has shown somo improvement, and o better
