THE NEW BAKE PROPOSED FOB CHABLKSTON.- j
Tho following paragraph, from the Boston Post !
of the 18th, will be read with interest :
A subscription boole for a National Bank in
Charleston, S. C., has been opened at tho office of
J. W. Davis, Banker, No. 25* State street. The
prospectus says the small bank capital there of
Uve hundred thousand dollars is found to be in?
adequate. Capital is so much needed that money
easily commands eighteen per cent, per annum,
the law*against usury having been abolished in
that State. The two banks in operation in Charles?
ton have paid a dividend of twenty-four per cent,
on their capital from the profits of the last year.
The Stay Baw passed by the Legislature baa been
pronounced unconstitutional by the highest ?
judicial authority; the same is null and void, and
debts can be enforced now in the sams manner as !
formerly. . The citizens of Charleston have sub?
scribed for five hundred and sixty-six shares,
equal to fifty-six thousand six hundred dollars, to I
the proposed bank. This subscription can easily
be raised to one hundred thousand dollars, os it
is ascertained that tbe bank can be put into opera?
tion. The citizens of Charleston, individually as
well as the banks, having suffered greatly in' their
fortunes by the results ol the war, have not
sufficient funds to enable them to subscribe the ,
full amount of the capital, stock of the proposed |
baale, and therefore capital from abroad has to be
sought for. The proposed capital is three hun?
dred thousand dollars, divided into three thou?
sand shares, of one hundred dollars each.
SAXE OF KALMIA Mrxxs.-The sale of this valua?
ble property takes place to-day at ll A M., at the
Old Exchange. These mills IStve been in course
of erection for some time, and they are now able
to receive tho machinery and other appurtenances
necessary to co m meneo operations. Tho grounds
belonging to the company amount to 4259 acres,
and are situated immediately on the South Caroli?
na Railroad, extending from near the Graiii te ville
Depot to within one milo of the Bath Paper Mill,
and eight miles of tho city of Augusta, Georgia,
on the waters of Big Horse Creek." The Cotton i
Factory (vrithin'one hundred feet of the railroad)
is a two story brick building, one hundred and four
(104) feet wide.by two hundred and twenty-seven
(227) feet long, designed to contain ten thousand
spindles and three hundred and twenty looms, and
is four-fifths completed. There are on tho land
eexentry-eight neat and commodious cottages for
operatives, completed and in course of erection ;
a first-class steam saw mill in complete working
order ; a good grist mill ; ii carpenter shop with
steam engine and boiler ; planing machine, tools,
&c.; blacksmith shop, with complete set of tools ;
machine shop, with steam engine and boiler, lathe,
drill press, &c. ... . . ...
The rcachinery, water. power, and all tho acces?
sories or the property are such as to adapt it for
first-class cotton and paper factories, and the sale
should command the attention of capitalists, as
the terms are moderate sind the enterprise, when
completed, will be a paying success. There is how
on the land sawed lumber sufficient to complete
all the buildings; the dam and other.appurtenances
aro four-fifths completed, and the purchaser would
have no difficulty in at once commencing opera- j
tiona.
MAYOR'S COURT, April 22.-Edward Hartshorn, a
colored seaman, who had gone on board of the' I
Hteamor Josephine ou Friday night to sleep with a
friend, and when he went off in the morning took

an unsound hatchet, convinced him that he had ;

policemen couldn't take him, but withdrew the ex?

of having eaton no breakfast, was fined $5.

and knocked at a door so loudly that- nobody came
to let him in, buta policeman stepped up to ''carry

not numerous, and to snatch from the -hands of

PERSONAL.-Wo had the ploasur* of grouting in
our sanctum Mr. J. FRASER SHECOT. who visita
this c'.ty for tho purpose of procuring advertise
tuonts and subscriptions for tho Atlanta New Era
ana Ladies' Nome. Tho New Era has a large cir?
culation in Georgia, and is in overy respect an excel?
lent advertising medium. Tho Ladies' Home, as
its namo indicates, is a popular -vockly designed
for family reading, and is a Southern paper thiil
should bo extensively patronized. Mr. SHECTJT
will visit our merchants during Iiis stay, and wo
advise all who wish to retain the Georgia trado
to consult their interests by advertising.
TSAJKMniNo.-The L O. O. F. in tho UnitciJ

pointed Friday, the 2Cth Inst., as a day of. thanks?
giving and prayer, to bo observed by all who havo

tho members of the different lodges at the Odd
Fellows' Hall, comer of King and Liberty strcots.
Tho exercisos will commence at 8 P. M., and after
tho religious ceremonies an address will bo deliv?
ered by P. G. Master, lt. S. DURTEA. Tho thanks?
giving Borvices will be public and of unusual in?
terest, as the fraternity have been generally reti?
cent in their conduct, and tho outside world could
only surmibi their proceedings. As the invitation
has been extended to tho ladies particularly a
large attendance is certain, and the proverbial
gallantry of tho Odd Fellows will be put to the test.
NEW BOARDING HOUSE.-Wo alluded recently to
the fact that tho "King Mansion" was soon to bo
opened as a first-class private boarding house. A
notice of the fact is now announced in another
column.
This centrally situated residence certainly offers
groat induccmants to those in search of a delight?
ful home, fine parlors, wide and spacious halls,
and ploasant chambers. The house will be under
the superintendence of Mrs. E. E. OTTOLENOTJI, who,
during the war, was located at Sumter, S. C.,
where B?ie gained for herself hosts of friends by
her disinterested kindness and hospitality to
strangers.
We havo been shown through the spacious
premises, and will only say that, if we were in
search of a comfortable homo, this is the kind of
ono wo should select, and we can, with all con?
fidence, recommend the house to those who aro
seeking pleasant and cool apartments for tho
summer.

MAT FESTIVAL.-We have had the pleasure of in?
specting the programme cf a May Festival to be
given by the pupils of the Normal School on Wed?
nesday, May 1st, at the Hibernian Hall. As the
time is some days distant we will only say that it
will be an entertainment of no ordinary character.
There will be a Queen of Love, Beauty and
Flower j, and the coronation of each will be
in a different language. The first in French,
the "second in German, and tho third in
flowery English. - The young ladies of thia school
and their talented preceptors deserve great
credit for their efforts to celebrate May day as in
Auld Lang Syne. The performance will be entire?
ly, private,,and only the friends of the pupils or tu?
tors can obtain admission, and we advise all who
haye even a glimmering of a chance to exert them?
selves and petition tho fair ones to have pity and
grant them an entrance to tho Floral Hall. The
pamphlet before us is from the Bocord Printing
House, and is a very neat specimen of the typo?
graphical art. v
YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.-On Sun?

the Circular Church, delivered an eloquent and
impressive discaurso before the Association, in
