EASTER ELECTIONS .-On Easter Monday, accord? ing to a long established rule in the Episcopalian Church, the annual elections will bo held for War ? dens, Vestrymen, &c. Among tho different Churches that hold these elections, none are, per? haps, more worthy of no{o than the Old Goose Creek Church. This was built shortly after the settlement of this State by the English, and has been used as a place of worship ever since. Before tho Revolution, that section of tho country was considered healthy, and what are now simply win? ter residences were then occupied during the ma? larious heats of summer. At that time, thc Church was in a flourishing condition, and the in? spection of the tombstones will prove that the congregation was composed of tho oldest and wealthiest families in the State. During the revolutionary war, when the British soldiery desolated the ?rhole lower country, this Church was saved from destruction on account of tho English. Court of Arms which'were placed over the pulpit. The congregation of thiB Church, though much smaller than in the past, still num? bers many c f the old names, and the interest in the Church is still kopt alive. On Easter Monday, they will, in common with other Episcopalian Churches, hold their annual elections. PISCATORY.-Tho markets have been fully sup? plied with the various fish common to . those waters, besides many that are strangers and have been brought from the ~>asts of. Georgia and Florida. The piscatoral dealers have been in their glory, and a brisk trade was drivon at their end of the market. Nearly every stall is supplied, and the purchaser can make a selection from whiting, porgy, or any of the numerous branches of the fish family who viBit oui- wators during the spring months. Besides these varieties, choice steaks can be obtained from the drum, and occasionally from a chance visitor from Florida known as the snapper. The fish market does not owe its popu? larity solely to the fish merchants; that irrepressi? ble class of the community, the old maumas, como in for their share of the public patronage, and ofTer tempting piles of oysters, clams and stone crabs. Theje delicacies aro in great demand, and the price being lower than beef, many persons ig? nore that market anl purchase their daily sup? plies nearer the water. Tho itinerant fish venders are also doing a largo business, und their sonorous voices can be heard oven above the rattling of drays a? they appeal to the public to come and purchase. While these supplies last there is little danger of starving, as the material for a good meal is within the reach of all, and can be obtained almost for a mere song-certainly for a small in .vestment of greenbacks. RAID ON COLORED GAMBLERS.-Our city has been infested for sometime by gangs of colored men and boys who were accustomed to meet at differ public points and indulge in tneir passion for gam? ing. This bas become such ?"Niisanco and the crowds who collected were so boisterous and un? ruly that the attention of the police authorities was directed toward them, and it was determined to take aband in their little game, The colored gamesters not having tho feai of God before their eyes were assembled last Sunday at one of their favorite camping grounds on Gads? den's Wharf, when tho pickets gave the alarm that tho enomy were advancing. Great acti vi ty was dis? played br the beseiged, but the case seemed hope? less as they were cut off from their base, and Lieut. HENDRICKS and a chosen few were advancing briskly. Some suggested a parley and a surrender, on thc conditions that they keep their weapons and their stakes; but thc Knowing ones objected; and as matters approached a crisis, several who stood lingering on tho brink of thc wharf look a parting glance at the scenery and plunged overboard. Fortunately tho tide was out, and the parties were enabled to make their escape by taking ?to the mud on their hands and knees, but ? few wero captured and conveyed: to tho Guard House, vhere their plunder was confiscated; but, in consequence of a want of .sufficient ?evidence, they were discharged. This raid is a, movo in tho right direction, and we hope will be only tho precursor of many, and the fight .will be continued until these gangs of rowdies and gamblers are completely broken np and dispersed. SPIIING OPENING?-We are told that "the little hirds began to sin % rejoiced at Spring's returning," but they did not have much to sing about, as un? fortunately for them they do not wear hats, and soldom change their feathers. Tho fair damsels of our city can put tho birds to blush by tho beau? ty and brilliancy of their adornings, but in ordor to do this effectually, it is necessary to study the ways and means, i. e. to find out tho placo where tho Parisian novelties can be obtained. Mrs. BOOTH of No. 423 King street, has just opened a full stock of every article in tho Millinery line that can please tho fashion seekers, and a call at her establishment will prove time well invested. SPUING MILLINERY.-From a glance at tho differ? ent store windows on King-street it will be roadilv observed that the ladies aro instantly attracted by tboso that display some new style of head gear, and that establishment becomes immensely popu? lar forthwith. Knowing that tho dear creatures do not like to hunt in tho hot sun after these nov? elties, wo have 'concluded to act the part of philanthropist and point to them the spot when the wonders of the millinery world are to be ex? hibited. We refer to Mrs. M. J. ZERNOW'S estab? lishment, No. 897 King street, whero a full assort? ment of tho latest touches can be seen, and once seen, are soon purchased. ORGANIZATION OF A BIBLE SOCIETY.-The follow? ing letter from Rev. E. A. BOLLES will explain it? self: Pursuant to appointment, after a eerraon at the Baptist church m the town of Union, South Caro? lina, on the morning of the 14th April, A867. tho Union District Bible Society was organized, as auxiliary to the American Bible Society. This auxiliary will soon receive Bibles and Testaments from the American Bible Society, amouuting to 375 volumes, valued at $169.60,"for distribution among all destitute readers alike. Officers-Br. J. H. Dogan, President; Judge T. N. Dawkins, vice President; William A. Nicholson, Secretary; iVifiiam Eller, Treasurer; Board of Managers Rev. 0. A. Darby, Chairman ; 3en. W. H. Wallace, Dr. D. M. Breaker, Col. T. G. McKissick, Kev. D. A. Todd, Messrs. Steadman, Thompson, Wm. A. Nicholson and William Eller. Fifty-seven members were enrolled, with .contri? butions. This society is worthy of emulaci?n. May God bless and prosper it. E. A. BOLLES, Agent American Bible Society, S. C. COLUMBIA, S. C., April 16, 1867. MAUNDY THURSDAY.-The day before Good Fri? day has been marked from an early age of the church, by acts of humility, in imitation of that of the Saviour in washing the feet of his disciples. It is in consequence of an associated act of charity, the distribution of food in baskets or maunds, that the day became distinguished in England aa Maundy Thursday. Tho King of England was formerly accustomed on this day, to have as many poor men brought before him as he was years old, and washed their feet with his own hands. This ceremony was performed by Queen ELIZABETH when she was in her 89th year, but was last observed in its foll extent by JAMES II. Although this portion of - the ceremony has been neglected for years, yet tho custom? ary alms are still donated to the poor. Lu Romo tho ceremonies of Holy Thursday are varied and imposing, and are witnessed by the large crowds that annually visit the Eternal City at this season. In imitation of the Saviour the Pope washes the feet of thirteen Bishops, and afterward serves them at supper. In the Sistino Chapel after the Gloria in Excclsis is sung, no bolls aro allowed to be rung in Borne, until the following Saturday morning, and during rbis period of two days all the bells in the city ave mute, oven those employ? ed in hotels and private buddhas. On the even? ing of this day the ceremony of washing the feet of the BO called pilgrims takes place. These are of both sexes and the ablution is performed by the at? tending priests. In this country tho day is ob? served os a religious festival, but no particular im? portance ia attached to it, nor is it distinguished by any peculiar rites. OPENING OF SPRING STYLES AT THE EMPORIUM OF FASHION, No. 371 KING STREET.-Mrs. S. J.
