arid dramatist SHAKESPEARE has few superiors, and
a careful perusal of bi? works always adds some
item to the store of knowledge. In other cities
readings from bis plays .are quite popular and are
always well attended. These entertainments are
comparatively rare in this city, and their introduc?
tion at the present time proves that literary pur
snits were not entirely abandoned during the war,
and the Bard of Avon still exercises his potent
sway. Professor POBCHEH will continue his public
readings at the College Chapel to-night, commenc- |
mg at 8 o'clock. The play chosen will be the first
part of King "Henry IV, and all persons who
desire to hear history and poetry combined should
attend.

ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING.-A distressing accident '
occurred yesterday morning, which resulted in the
serious wounding of Bichard Pepper, colored. Mr.
JOHN APPLE, who keeps' a' store at the corner of
King street and Burns' liane, had purchased a
number pf old guns and muskets, with,the inten?
tion of selling them again. These guns were
lying on bis.counter, and were being examined by
several customers, when his little son, while hand?
ling them,! accidentally discharged one, the bali
entering Pepper's thigh, near the hip, and passing
through the leg. The wounded man was taken to j
the Boper Hospital, where be received every atten?
tion. On dressing and probing the wound several
pieces of bone were taken ont, but it is not .-sup?
posed to. be necessarily mortal, ' The musket which
was discharged was supposed to be-unloaded, and
the accident is deplored by Mr. APPLE, as he bad
examined the guns and was not ' aware that any
were m a dangerous condition. Although a num?
ber of persons were in the store, arid the shooting
occurred so near 'tho street, no one else was in?

misrepresentation and fraud, and to promote the
general prosperity of the country.

Otra PUBLIC HOADS.-Ali persons who have re?
cently driven over either the King or the Meeting
street roads have a painful remembrance of the
agonizing jolting that was inflicted upon the un?
happy traveller, and wiil be pleased to learn that
efforts are being made to relay a portion of the
road in a substantial manner. The Commission?
ers of Public Boads have advertised for propo?
sals to furnish from three to five hundred thousand
feet of three inch plank eighteen feet in length
and of the best quality, and tb be delivered at
steted intervals aloug the main road from the city
limits to the Six Mile House.
A resolution was recently offered in Council by
Alderman GERDTS that the City Entrineer be em?
powered to furnish estimates for making a shell or
plank road in the city limits. These were pre?
sented to Council at the last meeting, but in con?
sequence of the emptiness of the treasury no ac?
tion was taken, and the report was received as in?
formation. Mr. BARBOT'S report stated the differ?
ence between the two roads, and proved that the
annual expense of repairing a shell road would be
far less than a plank - road, as the repairs to the
former omy aoded strength -ind solidity to the
road-bed. .
It is evident that the city can take no steps in
the matter at present, but as their finances be?
come improved, it will be necessary to pay some
attention to these roads, as their present condi?
tion ia shocking. A prank road will be the least
expensive, but it does not possess sufficient dura?
bility to recommend it for goner al nee, and it ie
-constantly.requiring rerjairs. The best policy
would be for the ConunissionorB of Boads and
tho. city authorities to unite on the same plan
pf road and thus make, a public drive that will be
ian ornament to the r?ty. if operations are com?
menced at once, tho entire route can be finish ed
before next year, but if delayed until the summer,

lars'. There are to be 9600 chances and 2375 prizes,
or one prize to every fourth chance-tho price of
tickets being $5. The s?beme promises to be very
fair, and the projector refers to many substantial
business men in Georgia and Florida. The drawing
takes place on the 28th, and all who wish to invest
had Detter draw their money before that day.
BAEOXTJSS FOR TUE LADIES.-AB we write, the
sweet sound of Dixie is heard in the street from
some gay whistler whose voice has not yet forgot
its cunning. Wo all romember the enthusiasm
which greeted this tune, and tho rousing cheers
which wero given when the chorus, "Hurrah for
the homespun dresses tho Southern ladies wear,"
was sung. With the cause homespun went up,
and the two prevailing ideas were then calico and
reconstruction, both of which have been liberally
furnished since the crash. Messrs. STOLE, WEBB
& Co., knowing that the demand for calico is never
satiated, have offered to their lady oustomors 3000
yards at l?Jc. lt is only slightly damaged, and
"that can easily wash out. Further comment is un?
necessary, as the store is well known and the bar?
gain certain.
CLOTHING AND FURNISHING GOODS-The ladies
are not the only persons who change with the
seasons. The lords of creation are not a wit be?
hind them, and the fashionable man can always
be known by the care with which bo attends to
i the demands of the inexorable goddess. To be
j well dressed is the ambition of every gentleman,
i as it is well known that in the majority of cases
I the tailor makes the man. This remark may
appear rather harsh, coining from one of the
-naligned sex, but those who have once gloried in
