OPENING DAT.-By refrenes to oui' advertising I
columns our fair readers will see that this is "o^on
ir.g day" at Mrs. Ht*NEEENts Fashionable Millinery
Establishment, over UEFEBECABDT & CAMPSEN s
Btoro, comer King and Market streets.
TEIAL OF THE RIOTEBS-The Provost Marshal
.was engaged yesterday morning in hearing the
evidence in this case. i,?ive witnesses were ex?
amined, but aa there aro nearly five times that
.f number, the case will noe be concluded for some
days.
FAILURE OF THE MAILS.-No mail was recoived
last night north of Wilmington, an accident having
occurred on the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad.
The regularity with which these failures occur is
extremely refreshing, and we are now agreeably
disappointed when the mails arrive two days con?
secutively.
;ABBEST.-We learn that three white men, in the
custody of the niiktary, arrived in this city yester?
day from Aiken. They were arrested on a oharge
of being concerned in the lynching of the negroes
who killed Col. STEADMAN. These negroes wi-ro in
the charge ol'the Sheriff who was conveying them
to the jail, when he was set up n by a band of men
disguised for the occasion, who took the negroes
and hung them. It is presumed that the affair
will be investigated by tho military authorities.
UNITED STATES COXTBT-Hon. GEO. S. BBXAK.
presiding-J. H. BALDWIN VS. C. A. L. LAUAB,
Suit for the substitution of records lost during the
lr.ie war. HENRI: BUIST, Esq., argued in- fa- j
vor of the substitution, and A. G. MAGBATH, Esq.,
contra. . ; :~ ?.? .
Tho District Attorney has not yet arrived, bu^
is daily expected, as there are mr ay criminal cases
V connected with the violation of vho Revenue Laws,
and the distilling of liquors;'also the case of homi?
cide wh.ch took place at Castle Pin elm ey.
COBBEGTION.-In our report of Governor OBB'S
speech yesterday, wo inadvertently stated, that the
SHEEHAN Bill disfranchised i800 persons in Ander?
son District, S. C. What his Excellency meant
and did say, was that in Anderson District the
proportion of tho3e disqualified was to the entire
number of white voters in the District as one in
eighteen.
If the same ratio obtains throughout the State,
the number of citizens disqualified under the Re?
construction Act is about 2000.
bshed in Madison, Ga., paid ns a visit yesterday
evening He is stopping at the Mills House, and
expects to be in tho oity till Saturday. Any of our
merchants desirous of advertising in the vj coun?
try of our sister State will do well to see Mr. RICE.
Mr. B. informs us that the fruit in that part of
Gsorgia is pretty generally killed. There was a
heavy frost on Tuesday morning as far South as
Augusta. There is considerable dishrocs in Mid
die and Upper Georgia-provisions very scarce,
and prospects none of ?he brightest.
ABEEST OE A DETAULTEB.-An individual who
7" "bas been figuring extensively m the South, and
particularly m this State, was arrested recently on
the charge of defalcation and theft. He formerly
held tho position of Paymaster's Clerk, and took
advantage of the situation to appropriate $180,000
of the money to bis own uses. The dishonest
clerk succeeded in escaping, ard the Paymaster
was cashiered for the deficiency iu his accounts.
Since that event the Northern Detectives bave
been steadily engaged in tracking tho thief, but
nave only recently succeeded in spotting him. He
had purchased a plantation near Edisto, and was
living in the foll enjoyment of bis ill-gotten wealth
when surprised by the detectives. -
FBEONDSCHAFTSBTJND.-Those" of our German
friends wno have the entree of this Club, will be
interested to learn that an entertainment is to be
given at the Hall in Society street, this evening.
The programme promises well." It is as follows :
?li Instrumental Trio : " Romanza, " KEISIQEB. 2.
Chorus, ZEDTLEB. 8. Solo for the Flute, STBAN
frrjEBA, 4. Soprano Solo, from SCHUBERT.
The play of the evening is " Paris in Pommern,"
~ a sort of roaring farce, though it is called a Vaude?
ville, received with loud marks of approbation,
when performed last year, and we feel assured it
tviH be given to-night witb even more eclat. It is
repeated at the earnest request of many of the
members. '
S Tableaux Vivants are to succeed the comedy,
and then dancing. We have no doubt our friends
.will have? good time.
Tm WEBSTEB ELEMENTABI' READER, designed to
follow WEBSTER'S Elementary Spelling Book. New
York: D. APPLETON & Co. 1867.
This is the title of a neat little schoolbook, sent
ns by Mr. JOHN RUSSELL, King street, illustrated
throughout. It begins with the Alphabet, beauti?
fully illustrated, followed by short, easy and inter?
esting reading lessons; then come lessons contain?
ing longer and harder words. After about the first
hundred pages, tho spelling lessons are omitted,
and the N lance of the book is devoted exclusively
to initruv... a and inter es ting reading matter.
All of the lessons contain precepts or examples
of virtue, morality, industry, or encouragement to
the earnest pursuit of a true aim in life. Sectari?
an, political, and sectional controversies are totally
avoided.
VERDANCY.-The let of April passed almost un?
noticed in the city, few practical jokes being per?
petrated, the mass of the people having politics on
the brain which prevented their thinking of any
lighter subjects. There were some, however, who
followed the time-honored practice of makin g fools
?? of all thoy met, and not satisfied with the day set
apart for this purpose have continued to sell all
"whom they meet. The failure of the Northern
mail yesterday was immediately turned to a good
account by the news dealers, and several old copies
of the Herald and other papers were sold to tho
unsuspecting. The news boys rushed frantically
about yelling, "Here's your New YorkfieroZd," and
the general desire to learn the latest intelligence
Boon brought them purchasers. '-It is an ill wind
that blows no one good," and we congratulate the
news vendors on their successful soil.
MAYOR'S COURT, April 8.-Peter Norris, a color
red youth, who helped himself to apiece of black
cambric from the counter of a dry goods store
kept by a lady, was imprisoned ten days.
An individual, whose chimney had violated a
City Ordinance, and caught afire, paid 810 for its
outrageous conduct.
An old veteran, at present attached to the Bar?
leycorn Artillery as sponger, and who bad receiv?
ed a severo wound in a lats engagement, was fined
$5 for falling down where people had to pass over
bim.
Limns Singleton, a young man of color, who had
the misfortune to loose a padlock of immense
"value, and who went into the room of one Frank
Gadrden to search for it, and took a fancy shirt
by mistako, was imprisoned for ten days.
A black boy, who was detected in putting bricks
on the track of the street railroad, was sent to tho
ProvcBt Marshal.
ABCHTTECTCBE.-The inhabitants of the upper
wards have not been idle, but have been building
np their waste places and improving tho houses
that escaped the war and the fires. As Trooden
.buildings can still be erected in that part of the
city they have sprung up with a mar vellous rapid?
ity compared with the slow growth of brick and
mortar in the down town section. These woodon
houses are not very ornamental intheirdesign, and
will not improve the appearance of the street ex?
cept by filling up the vacant lots. They aro usual?
ly built on a stereotyped plan, two stories high,
with a small brick foundation, and the eye is often
wearied with the sameness of the scenery. The
hasty manner ia which these housos aro con?
structed necessarily makes them frail, and one is
now being built at the corner of Bogard and Rut?
ledge streets, in which the architect has neglected
to have any foundation, preferring to let his house
stand upon its own merits. Although this plan is
the cheapest it will be found that in the end it
would have paid better to have used the brick and
have avoided the decay that must take place in a
building resting solely on the damp ground.
