already favorably known to our fair readers, will j
add tc her popularity by offering for their inspec- [
tiou a choice stock of millinery goods. Sirs.
?WATTS' establishment is probably more frequented
than any other cn King street, and the announce?
ment that she is prepared to furnish the latest
ts; ring novelties will sot many pretty heads crazy,
anti it will tax thc energies of Sirs. W. and her as?
sistants to answer the numerous questions pro?
pounded by the fashion seekers.
THE AMERICAN FABMEB.-We have received the \
April number of this magazine from Mr. S. HABT,
the agent for the publishers, and find that it fully |
sustains its reputation as the oldest and best agri?
cultural publication in the United Statos. The
Fermer does not confine itself to agriculture, but
is full of useful information, and is an invaluable
work for the Southern planter, and should be
talion by all who wish to succeed in their opera?
tions.
Gu AND CONCERT.-The music-loving portion of |
our community will be pleased to learn that Mr.
OSWALJ) MEYER and his two sons, Ono and JULIUS

who have attended their dramatic entert ainmcnts
will gladly avail themselves of this opportunity, to
bear those delicious strains that Mi-. MESES knows
BO well how to produce.
CHEAP FREIGHT TO NEW YOEE.-Cotton snip?
pets will bo gratified to learn that an important
redaction has just taken place life the charge for
transporting cotton from this point to New York
by steam. Messrs. BAVENEL & Co., agents for thc
LEAKY Uno of steamers, viz : tho steamships
Quaker City, Saragossa and Grenada, have put
down their freight on cotton to New York to one
dollar per bale, which will bo the rate for either 1
Upland or Sea Island Cotton. This will bo an im?
portant benefit to the cotton morchants, and will
muck facilitate the trade between the two points.
STEAMSHIP SEAGULL.-Wo regret to learn that j
Capt. BUTTON'S fine steamer the Seagull, had a
trifling accident to her. machinery on her voyage
bonce to Baltimore on the 30th, and has put into
Fortress Monroo for repair! The accident ia un?
derstood to be of such a'charaotor as will not dis?
arrange her regular trip the present week from
Baltimore.
Wc trust such will be tho case, for the business
between our sister city of Baltimore is . growing
largely and wo cannot spare any of our always 1
punctual st earners from their accustomed work.

THE CANARY TROUPE.-We take pleasure in hot- I
ing the arrival of a'troupe of those distinguished
feathered songsters. This' troupe is composed of I
both male and female voices, and they are the fin-,
cst vocalists ever brought into this country. .They |
have obtained rooms during their s tay wi th Messrs.
SLEOKB & BURKE, one door below thia Mills House, ;
where they will'give public receptions. Hume ex- j
erts. a powerful influence apon the passions, but
there is no Bound- more sweet than the-melody of j
the birds'. Man has endeavored in vain to make
instruments that would ' resemble their tone; D?t?
hes never succeeded in imitating nature, to per?
fection. A. canary is one of - the most delightful of |
otu- singing' hirds, and is an' acquisition to every
lady's .boudoir. . Those advertised by Messrs.
SLIDES & B4RKE are th a best German birds, and
we ad jj?se a visi t to the Concert - Hall.
BUSINESS MAP OP CHARLESTON.-Mr. C. T.
AUBIN, thepublisher of this map, arrived on the
Saragossa last evening, and has brought with him
a number of these maps for distribution to sub?
scribers. Mr. AUBIN has been detained much
longer than he anticipated by an accident to his
title piece, bat ia now ready to present oar citizens '
with a map perfect in all of its details. This map
is six feet by Bis, and has a strong and durable
canvas back. It differs in many essential portico- ;
lars from most maps, having not only/the streets
clearly defiled, bat the houses and their numbers
axe easily recognized. Around the border are the.:
business cards of many of oar pronnhent mer?
chants, -while others axe upon the nooses occupied I
by them. This map will be a valuable- acquisition !
to oar Citizens, and will be useful both as aa.orna?

RoDBIGTTES' PSZMGNIO FiLTXTR SPECIFIC.-In tO- !
felling to this medicino in yesterday's issue we uhr
intentionally were;iguilty -Of.several errors, and
gladly': take the present opportunity to make the
corrections. Tho specific was prepared by Mrs!
RoDBiomEs, a respectable lady of this city, and I
from her long experience in nursing the sick, she
feels satisfied that she is offering the publie no
?Ostrom, bat a remedy that has been tried and
found efficacious in numerous instances. Mrs.
has prepared this specific with great ears, and her
only design m offering it for sale is not for a pe- I
enniary reward, bat simply to reimburse herself j
for the trouble and expense necessary to prepare
it. Dr. CAUIXEK'B store being on the opposite
corner, we unwittingly credited him with the pro?
prietorship, instead of tho rightful owner. Since
that time we nave become bettor informed, and
can now confidently stato to those afflictod with
fhimr?ny_ omnplaintfl that their disease is not in?
curable. The doctors say while there ia life there I
is hope; .buVby. ^trying the Specific they change J
that hope into a certainty, and are able to take
pew lease of lifo,
THEO-WTOO BRICKS.-On last Monday, night,, as
Poh^ooman TROY was 'performing his d?tya?ji?or
senlinol in front of thc Guard House,. a brick .tras
thrown at him from tho other p?t?e of tho slroot,
with such force as to leave a portion of it adhering
to tho jamb or the door, against which it struck,
passing just ovor his hoad. Had the policeman
boen so unfortunate as to have been hit by this
missile, ho would, no doubt, have boen seriously,
if not fatally injured.
Tho scoundrel who took this cowardly way to
hurt a most excellent- mon made his oscape so
expeditiously that no trace could be discovered of
him, though immediate search was made.
SEW INO MACHETES.-These are now indispen?
sable additions to a well regulated household and
tho object is always to procure one that combines
tho modern improvements. This is often a diffi?
cult matter and the merits of the different makers
aro discussed frequently before tho purchase is
mode. Wo aro happy to inform our fair readers
that this difficulty has boon obviated, and by refer?
ence to an advertisement of Messrs. J. E. ADQEB,
& Co., No. 62 East Bay street, they will soo that a
line single thread machino can bo purchased for
S18. The machines aro made by Mr. J. G. FOLSOM,
and the low price should at once commend thom
to< public favor. _
0 ?B STEAM FLEET.-Yesterday afternoon four
steamships could bo seen makins their way up
tho harbour, from the Ofling-and os they swept
upon the full flood tido, they attracted tho atten?
tion of many spectators congregated on the water
iront of the city.
By reference to our marine list, it will be noticed
that two of tho steamers wero from Baltimore,
namely i The ' 'Falcon," Capt. REED, with a very
heavy freight, including 40 cavalry horses for tho
United States Quartermaster-and tho "JPcUapsco,"
Capt. NEST. From New York, tho sido-wheel
steamer "Manhattan," .Capt. COLLINS, and the
regular line steamer "Saragossa," Capt. CBOWELL.
WO record with pleasure the arrival of this quar?
tette of steamers, and wish them all profitable
voyages, and a leng service on their respective
routes.

Immediately after the election had been de?
clared, Mr. STBADSS moved that the Secretary and
Treasurer's Report ba read, whereupon JOHN B.
STEELE, Esq., the Secretary and Treasurer, read
his report :
Gentlemen : In accordance with the practice of
all associations of this kind, the Secretary presente
to you a condensed report of the transactions of
this Board during the period of his official services.
Before entering, however, upon the details of a
formal report, he would take occasion to acknowl?
edge the goodness of Him in "whom we live, and
move, and have our being," by whose favoring caro
the life and health of each ono of ns has been pre?
served. It can rarely be said of an association, so
large as ours, that, at the close of the year, no
death hos been recorded. Surely, then, it is right
that thu manifest providential caro should be
gratefully acknowledged.
Ho would, also, take occasion to siy that bia
Labors have been cheered and lightened by the
cordial co-operation of the members of your hon?
orable body, the constituted guardians of the
trade and commerce of this city, likewise by the
assistance of others, who, though holding no con?
nection with the Board, are, nevertheless, our
friends.
He entered upon his duties, personally, a strang?
er to tho majority of the Board, and it is gratifying
to him to hare received from the Committee ap?
pointed to examino his books, also from the Exec?
utive Committeo and from the Board, who adopted
unanimously the resolutions reported by them at
the last meeting, the flattering testimony of his
labors, and he begs to return to all of you his
heartfelt thanks.
Commerce, once the pride of this city, but which
was entirely broken up by the ravages of war, bas.
greatly revived, and has, thron ?h its several agents,
aw ?kened to a sense of its importance, and seems
resolved not to be behind in the race for the golden
prize.
Numerous steamship lines have been put in suc?
cessful operation, running both to Northern and
Southern ports.
The South Carolina and Kortheastern Railroads,
well equipped and efficiently managed, are also in
successful operation.
The Char?eatonond Savannah Railroad, recently
reorganized, iB equally-worthy'of commendation,
and we believe there is every encouragement for
us to oxpect ita completo success, under toa ener?
getic managomont os those in charge of tho enter- j
prise. . i - . -?-? ? -?.'<*."-'.
Geographically Charleston has tho best position
of any commeTcia* -fttty on the Southern coast.
Having ?n-ontlet, bott by sroafioVrafl; *&?te*firo~
auctions of its own and the adjacent States, it
seems neceasary that every facility should be
afforded to bring the trade to ber port; This, we
believe, can be efloctod by concerted action on the
part of the different corporations and associa tiona
like oars.
MEMBERSHIP.
Tho Board at its formation numbered forty-two.
Since which time it bss sie?uily increased, h?Y?ug j
now a total mombersbip of one hundred apd fifty
nine, each ono of whom. I am happy t. inform you,
has como forward and promptly paid his arrears.
WliiIo our membership has been rapidly increas?
ing, I am callod upon to report only ono resigna?
tion from tho ontiro list, Mr. Joseph A. Horgan, a
member ot tho Executive Committeo, and this waa j
in consoquen:e of his removing from tho city.
GENERAL BUSINESS.
Soon after tho organization of the Board sub- j
committees woro appointed, and various impor?
tant questions refcrrod to them for consideration.
Tho Chairman of the Committee on Hall, Bead?
ing Boom, sad Library made a report, which was
referred hack to tho Executive Committee for pru
den tial reasons.
This is a subject which has, since the formation
of tbe Board, occupied its attention, and the Sec?
retary hogs to rocommend an early action on the
part of the Hoard.
It is to bo boped that this Board will lead off in
this grand scheme, not only for the diffusion of j
knowledge and intercourse among its members,
but for tho good oi the people of our city and State.
The Committees on Inland Transportation and ;
Coastwise Navigation, two of. the most impor?
tant of our committees, have been at work
tho entire year.- and presented several inter
estit g report?. Besides these we have had j
interesting debates, Reports on the Blue Bidge
Bailroad from Messrs. Trenholm & Gourdin-on |
tho Bankrupt Law, Bales of Wharfage, on the
construction of the Cheraw and Coalfield Bailroad,
when addresses wero made by Messrs. B. D. Town- I
send and Allon McFarland-the Usury Laws, and !
many other topics.
W? have also put ourselves in communication
with Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade
in various parts if tho United States, and have
been in receipt of important communications from
many of them.
Altogether the Charleston Board of Trade has
even.- reason to feel gratified at the degree of suc?
cess that has crowned its new-born efforts thus far.
It has often been asked, what has the Board of |
Trade done? Doubtless .tho .objects and inten?
tions of this body are, in many instances, misun?
derstood. It 3hould bc impressed upon tho minds
of those who aro apt to ask, what has been accom?
plished? that the Board of Trade is no legislative
body, endowed with the privilege of enforcing its
convictions in the shape of laws upon the people
about us. We have no actual po ver to improve
business facilities or destroy monopolies; hut we i
have the advantage of making tho feeling of the
community publicly known.
Every merchant of our city, in whatever kind of !
business, ha? tho privilege of joining our body, and I
thus secure tu himself the advantage of expres?
sing publicly bis ideas on the business points of
tho day.
Merchants of every grade and standing meet !
here on equal footing. Ali have a right to be
heard, and tbe decision of the Board of Trade may
always be considered an index to the feelings and
wishes of a majority of the business men of our city.
We pretend, through our members, to represent
energy, experience and cap.tal, and there is no
reason why the mercantile voice of Charleston
should not meet with tho same attention and re?
spect as is given to associations of the same
character in our sister cities.
Let us not, then, grow weary in well doing, and I
I think we bave every reason to look forward to a 1
bright and happy future.
FINANCE.
The aggregate receipts of the past year amount
to $2163 62. Expond.tures $894 51, leaving a bal
anco in tho Treasury of $1769 ll.
Before closing this report, your Secretary knows
that he is expressing the s ntiment of every indi?
vidual mombor of the Board when ho mentions the
many acts of kindness and attention to our body
on the part of Messrs. White & Mixer.
Not only bave we had the use of their elegant |
club room during all the past year, free of charge,
but they have furthermore furnished us on all oc?
casions with every conceivable facility in their
power, and what, under other circumstances, would
have been an onerous obligation, by their polite?
ness and pleasant manner has made it almost un?
felt, thus in reality,' howover, entitling them to
greater thanks from the Board.
All of which, ia respectfully submitted.
JOHN B. STEELE, Seo'ry.
Upon motiOD of Mr. STRAUSS, it was ordered that
the Beport bc entered on the minute book, and
published in tbe daily papers of the city.
A committee of three was appointed to wait
upon the newly elected officers and inform them of
their election. ' Messrs. EASTEBBI, THOMPSON and
MOISE, were appointed on this Coinmittee.
The officers wore then introduced and addressed
the Board in a few brief remarks.
Letters of application were read from the follow?
ing gen (.lemon :
W. H. Joners, Thomas A. Jeffers, G. E. Gibbs
Dr. H. Baer, A. P. Caldwell, G. BL Loper, J. Ham?
ilton Wilson, Philip H. Koglor, S. Y. Tupper, J.
H. Devereux, and Alex. Isaacs.
Upon motion, tho mles wore suspended, and the
applicants ware elocted by acclamation,
un motion of Mr. E. W. MARSHALL it was
Resolved, That tho thanks of the Board are
hereby tendered to W. S. Hastie, Esq., and E.
Willis, Esq.. for the able and impartial manner in
which they bave discharged their duties.
On motion of Mr. MARSHALL, it was next
Resolved, That the thanks of the Board are
hereby tendered to John B. Steele, Esq., for the
able and indefatigable manner in which he has dis?
charged hie duties.
Both resolutions were unanimously adopted.
The Board then adjourned.
