THE RINDEBPEST.-The Department of State j
has received information from the United States
Consul at' Antwerp, that the ? ' 'epizoote," or. cattle
plague has recently passed the frontier of Holland
and broken ont with great violence in tho province
of Limebourg,. a few miles from Antwerp. TOthin
a few days 3000 cattle have died. The disease is
remarkably contagions, and has .been Imown to
have been transported and communicated by straw
used to envelope the roots of plants sent from one I
district tb another, ? end: also by cate and dogs j
which hod eaten of the bodies of dead animals,
and afterwards slept in the hay given to the cattle
for fodder. Stringent orders have been issued to
the collectors of our ports against the in trod nc- I
tion of this pest into our country from the ports of |
Holland, Belgium and Prussia.
BIG SOAKS.-A guest in one of the prominent
hotels received a considerable scare a few morn?
ing's since, on finding' his pocket-book and con?
tents missing. .The alarm waa s atm given end the
premises searched, but tho ;?ost> notes, wera not
found until the services of the Detectives had.been
' .' obtained, when the pocket-book 'was'discovered
safely ensconced between the mattresses where the
owner hod placed it before retiring: Both the xm

. the suspicion, and tbe owner of the regained green
' backs were delighted at the discovery, and tho as?
tute Detectives wero rewarded for their sagacity
in tracing, that-which was not lost. The payment
of some of the notes had been stopped, and it was
necessary for the- owner to-establish bis identity
before the Bank would acknowledge their genuine?
ness. Few scares havo so happy a termination,
and the "lost found" soon allayed tho turmoil in
the loser'b breast.

sacred cow was an. anomaly, for it was the first
time that such an ungainly animal had b^on train?
ed to perform before a Charleston audience.
... Slr. JOHN NALLOB, as master of the ring, is thor?
oughly posted in his role and managed his differ- j
eut subjects admirably, but if he were to exercise
bis powers to prevent smoking in the tent it would
bo appreciated by the audience. There are few
entertainments that prevent the attractions of this
circus, and we aro pleased to soe that it is well
attended. Last night every seat was filled and
many were obliged to stand, while others who carno
after the opening hour were forced to leave. As
many have leisure time on Saturday, they should |
improve the opportunity by visiting this eirena, as
they could hardly go to any place where they could |
find more amusement.

This series of sermons which have been regu?
larly continued throughout the post winter and up
to the present time, have, we have reason, to be?
lieve, been instrumental of much good in the
community. They have been uniformly well at?
tended, some of the smaller churches having
proved too small to accommodate the large audi?
ences. The sermons delivered have all been excel?
lent, and listened to with interest and we doubt
not with profit. Quite a large accession has been

of active and associate members-the former con?
sisting bf church members ; the latter of gentle?
men who are not members of o*"irches, but who.
still desire to aid the cause of Christianity in onr
midst.
?Wo learn that the Association contemplate
inaugurating a regular weekly Union Prayer Meet?
ing, to be held in the various churches of the city,
on some stated evening of each week; the exercises
to be conducted by the various ministers of the
city. We predict much good from this movement,
as il win not only strengthen the feeling of Chris?
tian unity among the various denominations of
Christians in our midst, but will offer a common
altar for those of every creed-as well, as those of
no creed-to worship at The first of these Union
Prayer Meetings will be held in Trinity Church on
Tuesday evening next.
ST. MICHAEL'S CLOCK_After a long interval of
silent idleness, during which the deck spoke not
p. word, but kept its hands modestly before its
face, the citizens were delighted to behold some
life in the old time piece. On Thursday a few
spasmodic efforts were made to regain the lost
lime, but were all unavailing, un td Mr. W. M.
BOUSE, the veteran time manipulator, took the sun
yesterday morning and succeeded in regulating
the Charleston world. It was a subject of rejoic?
ing Lo many that Mr. BOUSE succeeded in captur?
ing the god nf day, for he hos lately either wand?
ered from his sphere or bas been on a breeze and
become befogged. Some parties, instigated by
nalice, alleged that Mr. BOUSE was so much in the
labit of taking the sun, that he had carried him
iway until the dook was repaired, but this has
seen. proved to be a slander. The old dock is now
pursuing its usual round, and the hands move
briskly on their accustomed tour, but the bells
ire "still missing" as the hours, halves and quar?
ters are no longor told in tho clarion tones that
formerly announced the lapse of time. That
breaded individual has litterally stolen upon us
like a thief in the night, and it is only by a careful
sbservation that we can note his progress. The
City Council should toke prompt measures at theil j

ill right, yet its continued silence is oppressive,
