MONDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 18,1867. ? GOETHE'S BALLAD ?F THE MISSTKKL. The beautiful ballad of "Tho Minstrel," hy GOETHE, has been frequently translated by. BUL? WER and others, and is quito familiar to lilorary people Dut tho following translation by one of | our own citizens, ?oems to us the most felicitous of all that wo have seen, and we should venture to say, is one of the most true to tho beautiful origin? al The translator, in tho present instance, who, aa otu-readers will readily perceive, has all tho derterity of an expert in I he Courts of Apollo, in? troduces his rendering with a brief note. He says : "These lines of GOETHE, seems to me, rather an allegory than a common ballad. The fifth stanzas probably suggested CorjEumoE's fine tribute to tho spirit of his own inspiration-"I have found j poetry its own excooding groat reward." Doubt lees the first part of this is true. A large portion of GOETHE'S ballads are allegorical. He was not sensuous like SCHILLER but was perpetually sock? ing after the occult, and, in the merest song, he disguises a moral; and, in bis historical ballad, ho is apt to hide a mystery. Eut COLERIDGE hardly nodded the influence of tho fifth verse in this in? stance, to prompt a sentiment which is universal among poets. They sing as the birds do, else why sing ? Verily, man ia rarely disposed to compen- 1 sato any of our balladists with gold' chains or golden goblets. But GOETHE seems to illustraie art in this passage, which may reject tho gold \ cliain as an ornament for the Bard, but which will yet look gratefully upon the picturesque, and be? hold in the purple wine, in the golden vessel, the ideal of an assimilative and corresponding rich? ness, which will appeal equally to oyo and mind. "We may reject the gold as gold, per se, yet wol come a draught of Rhenish from thc goblet of gold, which we yet refuse to carry away in our own bosoms. Art is thus shown to be equally con? scious and unselfish-to be quick and keen in the appreciation of what is picturesque, appropriate and symmetrical, yet quite inJifiiarer-t to all the cares of accumulation. State Items. THE NEW SEGBETABV OF STATE.-We learn that Hon. Ellison Capers, the new Secretary of State of South Carolina, will enter upon the discharge of his official duties on Monday next, the 18th inst. All communications intended for him should henceforth be addressed to him at Columbia. ^ [Carolinian.. TUHF.AH CORPUS.-John A. BeVane, who is charged with the homicide of Charles E. Bennett, on Tuesday last, was brought before his Honor Judge Green yesterday, on a writ of habeas c:rrpus. After hearing several affidavits and the report of the Coroner, he waa admitted to bail, with suffi? cient surety, in the sum of $5000, for his appear? ance at the next term of the Court of General Ses? sions for this District. In every direction the plows can be seen in motion, and many necessary, but heretofore ne? glected, repairs have been completed The fences in particular, have been wholly or partly "recon? structed" by the introduction of new rails and present a more formidable opposition than they have hitherto presented to the invasions of enter? prising stray horses and long-snouted swine of the piney-woods genus. In fact, the fences have re? ceived more repairs within the last two months than in three or four years past. It affords us pleasure to notice these signs of awakening energy on the part of our people, satisfied as we are that the only way for them to throw off their present burdens is to go to work.-Ibid, ? CONFEDEBATE DEAD-There are two hundred and sixty-one craves of our Confederate dead in and around Columbia, in the keeping and care of the ladies of the Memorial Association. Under the direction of these' ladies all the dead have boon removed from their several places of rest to one place in the Cemetery. Among them are many nameless graves; nameless because either no name was originally marked upon their graves or else the faint tracery of a comrade's pencil nas yielded to time and become illegible, or eise the records have perished in some other way._Ibid. THE UjiVEKsrnr.-There are ninety-one btudents present fdr duty. Since the establishment of the University-January, 1866-there have been a hnndred and six matriculates.-ibid. SMAIX Pox.-This loathsome disease, we under? stand, is prevailing to a limited extent amone ne? groes in the lower portion of this District. One case, ongmating in that quarter, developed itself Maur village last week. Prompt steps were taken by the town authorities to have the patient, to? gether with all who were in the same house, re? moved, and there are now no apprehensions that the disease will spread in this community. Prudence? however, would suggest that the usual precautions he adopted hy all, both in town and country. [Lancaster Ledger. COLLECTOR, OF INTERNAL REVENUE.-T. NEW ORLEANS, February 13.-COTTON-Notwith? standing the unfavorable condition of the weather, there appears to bc a liberal inquiry this morning, but in the absence oflatcr advices from Liverpool it is not probable that a heavy business will bc transacted. The supplies are fair, and factors are evidently inclined to sell, but continue quite finn in their demands. No sales of mo meut have been reported yet. Very little business has cceu dene as yet, though, owjng in part to tho Inclemency of the weather, and in part to the fuct that but little of the receipts have yet been landed. Sales of 7500 bushels at $2 95 for No. 2 Chicago spring, in store, 1000 of white Californian at $315. Barley is Inactive. Common qualities are heavy Choice qualities, for malting purposes, are firm, but not plenty. Oats are lower and unsettled. The demand in moder? ate, even at tho concession. The sales are 30,000 bushels old Western at 57c, and new do at 50a60c; State at 67a 07 J?c; Jersey at 66o66>ic Eye is lower and in moderate demand. The eales sre 11,000 bushels old Western at $1 ldal 17, and new do at $1 20al 22; State ot $1 28al 29. Corn ia a shade better and more active ander the more favorable advices from Europe, but at the close the mar? ket is tame at the inside quotations.
